Lot of youths leagues/cups at provincial final stage
Munster has 3 tiers of Munster competition at under 14 16 and 18 with development competitions for those that dont make knock outs in each tier at 16 and 18s
South Munster dont compete in the Munster 14s so its very much dominated by north munster sides.
18s development plate young munster beat newport
18s development cup final. old christians beat nenagh
16s development plate killorglin beat waterford city
16s development bowl old crescent beat fermoy
14s competitions
Thurles beat Garryowen in cup
Bruff beat Charleville in Plate
Young Munster beat Nenagh in Bowl
Marys-Richmond-Thomond beat Bruff u13s in Shield
decent results considering - PBC players eased in and benching and no Blackrock or Marys players.. as well as certain injuries
schools won 42-19
clubs and schools won 34-33
Worth noting that it’s without the Leinster Schools Cup finalists from Rock and Marys so have to figure another few from them would feature.
Names I’ve seen or heard buzz about are:
-Dylan Gray - RBAI winger
-Tommy Smyth - Terenure 9
-Ruben Flynn - Connacht flanker
on the schools side:
-Michael Smyth - Terenure flanker (older brother of Tommy Smyth)
-Luke Kelly - Newbridge winger
And obviously Herbie Boyle

Munster clubs 17s and 18s and the 19s played connacht in sportsground today
I don’t know what the other provinces do so not commenting on them although I assume there is something similar mostly. The regional cup in Leinster is very good at identifying lads from around 15 to go into camps (not generally residential) over summer holidays and at mid term etc. know a few kids gone through it boys and girls and the set up seems very slick. They get really good coaching along with other bits off field. the standard of club coaching is generally okay but can be hit and miss a bit based on the luck of the dad being competent. Although again Leinster give good help there, my lads actually have a Leinster officer coming up next week to work on a specific that we asked him about.
How exactly am I being unfair? I’ve never actually accepted the premise that is often thrown out there that Leinster’s significant out-production of players is predominantly attributable to money in the schools system, but it’s an argument that has been trotted out on here (and elsewhere) countless times over the years.
But this selection (and this isn’t unusual at all over the past 5 years or so) absolutely can’t be attributed to that kind of advantage, especially when Connacht are so materially out performing Munster and Ulster.
If Munster have made wholesale changes and we’ll see these ratios shift a bit over the next few years then I’m very glad to hear it, but it hasn’t come to pass yet.
Hard to know why Munster have so few, tbey finished ahead of Connacht and Ulster in the youths interpros though obviously squads are picked on more than those games alone. FTD i think you are being unfair. Munster have made changes in their development systems and i really think it will be seen next year and in two years time when the players whove come through the munster clubs select set up are seen at interpro level, this side has been very strong past 2 years beating A schools all around them in group stage of junior schools cup which bodes well for interpros
Will qualify this in that there is a couple of players playing in this team who play their rugby with Glenstal. starting hooker plays sct with glenstal
Munster is a weird one.
We've probably had one of the most successful club pathways over the past while in producing guys that come onto senior contracts: JOD, Jack Daly, Edogbo X2, Butler, Coughlan, O'Riordan partially, Fineen Whycherley partially (think Josh might've been fully CCR from the get go), Tom Ahern, John Hodnett, Conor Ryan).
Excluding other guys like Eoin O'Connor and Evan O'Gorman who joined the Academy but didn't progress any further (could be loads more of these that I'm missing).
But our last two or three years of Youths squads have been absolutely awful. Don't know if it's a cyclical thing or whether the Munster underage structure has decided to move focus/funding/coaching away from the Clubs team, but the drop in quality at that level has been noticeable. It's a real worry for Cossie and Co I'd say.
Think the Munster JCT CSP team was winning all around them last season so hopefully there'll be a better clubs uptake either next Summer or the following Summer again. (Either that or our schools have gone to the dogs too...)
has to be the level of coaching, at both club and area representative level. Im not familiar with connachts youths club league set up. Do they have an inter area representative league similar to Leinster?
And these are club players, not schools, so youd expect a much great dispersal of player across the 4 provinces.
Connacht are obviously doing things extremely well, in order for them to have the same amount of starters at u18 level as leinster, considering they have 23 clubs and leinster have 71 clubs.
Ulster and munster, at 56 and 59 clubs respectively, have a hell of a lot of catching up to do.

This argument was posted on Leinsterfans, but I think it's a valid one:
When we see the massive discrepancy at other Irish underage representative sides skewed towards Leinster (i.e. 21 out of 33 players in the Irish U20 training squad via Leinster pathways), the repeated refrain around this is that no one can be expected to compete with the Leinster schools system, but what is the excuse at this level?
Munster have 0 players in the starting XV, and 3 total in the 23, Ulster 1 player in the starting XV and 2 in the 23, while Connacht have 8 players in the 23 (7 starting) and Leinster have 9 in the 23 and 7 starting. Couple of IQ guys.
What's the rationale for the frankly awful contribution of players at this level?

Yeah though strongest will make Irish schools team bar any exiles who aren't picked on that side
Yep.
Is that roughly the pool of players that will likely make up the clubs & schools squad?

It is max flynns brother.
Interesting, going to assume that's Max Flynn's brother also.
Safe assumption. Believe he is backrow.
I wonder if that's a third Gavin brother in the u17s.
SSo wè have all squads named now including iq/exiles except for leinster.
So this is from few weeks ago but any chance we'll see leinster squads before games take place.
