Sky recommend a 25 meg speed or 30 if you want to watch UHD.
The UHD sports on sky stream is absolutely outrageously good
Apparently Irish channels will be available on the freely tv streaming service in northern Ireland when activated so here's hoping it'll be the same in the republic for the free to air UK channels
There was meant to be a deal when saorview launched that we would get BBC on it and NI would get RTE on Freeview but that never materialised in the end
RTE, TG4 pay the transmission costs of their channels in NI, BBC is available to transmit on Saorview if someone, not BBC, is prepared to pay transmission costs. BBC is available in pretty much most of Ireland via satellite without additional cost to them.
RTE and TG4 might be available on that new streaming service in NI, not mainland UK of course, but I guarantee you, the Virgin Media channels won't be.
Can I ask someone who has Sky Stream, when you opt to record a programme, say on RTE 1, it puts the programme on a playlist and when you go to watch that programme, I understand that Stream plays that programme for you from the RTE Player ? But does Stream immediately start playing the programme for you, or does it direct you to the RTE Player, wait for it to load, find the programme, have to watch adverts first etc ? Like when you use the Player yourself ?
You have to watch the ads, but you can fast forward through them. But the biggest problem with Sky Stream is that it more or less doesn’t work with the BBC player. All others seem to work ok, however playlist will only remain however long the program or film stays on the player.
What are your opinions on the Sky Ultra UHD & Dolby Atmos add-on for €6 per month? Not sure if its value for money for me as I have surround sound but normally use it with built in apps on my LG TV, ie. not going through the Sky puck.
Is there much UHD content on terrestrial TV that would make this add-on a good purchase? I'm not a sports fan btw so if this only benefits Sky Sports channels, its not worth my while.
There’s no UHD content on terrestrial tv in Ireland.
More generally, when I had Sky Q UHD a few years back there wasn’t much other than sports, but there might be more of the Sky Atlantic-type stuff in UHD these days. Or the movies if you are taking that. Personally I dropped it at the first instance (and I’m a sports fan) but to be honest the use you will get out of it will depend on whether you have a big enough and good enough TV for it to make a difference over HD. And what you watch.
The UHD HDR sports coverage can be a bit off putting to be honest due to the difference in lighting. The darker parts of the pitch are darker and the brighter parts brighter. Sometimes I find it takes a bit more effort to watch.
I have Sky Sports UHD but I mostly watch the HD channel.
Has anybody who was unhappy with Stream, contacted Sky to go back to Q?
I was thinking of upgrading to a new 65 inch tv and getting that ultra hd add on. Would I need a 120htz tv or would 60htz be enough?
60HZ will work fine and you’ll have great picture
As of today 29/05/2024, sky are still offering fresh Sky Q installs according to their website so I see no reason not to but I haven't heard of anybody doing it personally
One option if they do get hairy is to cancel stream and sign up fresh to Q

Was thinking of going back to sky q as a new customer after a few years with virgin and I see they still charge €10 pm for HD(free for the first two months). Anyone know how likely they are to give it free for the year to a new customer?

Hi, just looking for some opinions. I have been with nowtv for 2 years now. I just us it for sky sports and sports extra. Is there still issues with sky stream, I was looking at getting it for the uhd. But having to pay the €25 for sky entertainment is what really is stopping me from getting it. I wish they had the option of just getting it for the sports alone.
Guys , I added Glastonbury to my planner yesterday and it showed me all the upcoming programmes , now today it's still showing me upcoming programmes but I cant find yesterdays programmes . Anyone know what I'm doing wrong , I only installed on thursday .
BBC just doesn’t work on Sky stream. It’s something to do with the bbc player, not sure exactly. Sometimes it does work eg match of the day but 90% of the time it won’t work for any bbc channels.

BBC don't licence their iPlayer for use outside of the UK. Streaming providers who assume they can use it in Ireland the same as UK are all having problems. Sky, Vodafone & Virgin Media all have issues now that they are trying to retire their legacy hard-disk boxes and move to streaming pucks. The ability to record BBC is particularly important here, since the other channels generally make their Player apps available in Ireland.
The only streaming service that works well for BBC is Eir TV - which allows unrestricted recording of UK channels - not quite the same as allowing BBC iPlayer, but at least it works. Eir also use the Apple TV 4k+ puck, which is the best-in-class of the streaming boxes, and since it is non-proprietary, you can do multi-room without any extra monthly fee other than the €9.99 eir TV bundle add-on, if you buy additional pucks rather than renting them.

Ok we are not getting the U.K. iPlayer but we need i.e. Sky, Virgin etc. an on demand service similar to BBC Nordic.
bbc is really weird though, cause there are a lot of programs that do remain in playlist

The same kind of weirdness is there on sky q with catch up. Some shows appear, some don't and there's no apparent rhyme or reason. I've noticed a lot of their big name dramas don't appear. I'm not even 100% sure the on demand from q totally matches stream (in BBC terms).
There is a specific deal between Sky and the BBC to allow Irish viewers access on a limited basis to catch up content, in lieu of being able to record on Stream and Glass. They are very anxious it not be referred to iPlayer, but there is a BBC branded catch up section. I am led to believe it is very hit and miss, but that they are trying to iron out more rights.
I’ve said this before but I think the charge about streaming providers assuming Ireland is the same as the UK really doesn’t stand up - eir have resolved their issues, Sky have a solution albeit an imperfect one, Vodafone don’t provide tv in the UK (other than letting you buy a completely off the shelf Apple TV through them), and it is very early days for both their product and VMs. VM are under separate management now from the UK side of the business which has been rolled into a joint venture with O2
Also, remember that Eir has had five years of a head start over everyone else (their product is around since 2019) and a long time to iron out the issues that others are now facing.
It may be the same as most broadcasters, they may not have rights outside UK just because they broadcast it doesn't mean they own it. Again like nearly all broadcasters they have investment partners, and rights come into it, wasn't that the row some time ago about Killing Eve, it had been shown on BBC America months before its UK airing to keep the US investors happy.
Rights issues aside, lots of people were told by Sky reps on calls that everything was available from the BBC on demand.
