This is actually kind of scary for how the games industry is going:
I'm sure a lot of this has to do with the ten ranking but Tose really shouldn't be posting a loss considering how much work they do.
If you don't know, Tose are one of the biggest developers I'm the world but do work for hire and support work while keeping their names and employees off game credits.
I can see a lot of Japanese studios running into a lot of trouble due to the falling yen.
Sounds like they wanted a way out of doing Horizon. It wouldn't be the first show to lose a showrunner while in pre-production or even full production. Think a recent example was Daredevil Reborn.
Only time a showrunner leaving would be an issue is if it was their idea initially, like if Joss had left Buffy as it was starting since it was his creation.
That's why I said Poundland Josh Whedon. I have my issues with his writing but at least he can do actual characters and his quips felt a bit more natural.
Whoa whoa whoa let's not get crazy here, Aloy is a million miles away from Buffy.
Given a time machine I do think I'd pop back to the late 90s and slap all those Buffy fans; what was cute and unique quickly became the preferred scriptwriting, dialogue crutch of every hack writer around.
I found her a Mary Sue with terrible poundland josh Whedon dialogue that makes her come across as trying too hard to be likeable and ending up totally unrelatable. It's like she has no interesting arc.
I think it'd be easy enough to tone down Aloy's less likeable qualities in a TV show. In the game, she's just constantly talking, annoyed by everyone and everything, and has too much ego (which because of the nature of the game is kind of deserved because she can do anything and is the best at everything). In a TV show, you could boost the supporting characters a bit more even though the main story would still revolve around Aloy.
Is Aloy an interesting/believable character ? I've booted up HZD and played it a bit but I find her/the game annoying/plastic/unauthentic. Like Disney straight to VHS/Streaming level annoying. So, I'd imagine a Netflix adaption of this would be a disaster.
Yeah that was my thinking too. Throw the budget into one or two bigger battle scenes, and the rest is just slightly futurised clothes, computer interfaces, and slightly war-ruined streets/buildings.
I suppose as well they have a lot more leeway with using their own ideas and not being tied down to lore. You'd be in danger of making something like halo which just alienated fans of the series.
tbh I’d say a big part of setting a Horizon TV show earlier is that adapting the game would be so expensive. A game entirely set in a lush post-apocalyptic setting and full of CG dinosaurs and lavish costumes for the human characters? I’d imagine the cost projections might have steered them down an alternate path 😅
Could still happen in a way truer to the source material now that it’s reportedly back to the drawing board, but yeah that’s a risky and expensive thing to adapt for TV.
I thought the lore and story of how the world had come to be in HZD was great, but it was great in the context of discovering it through Aloy and knowing what the world is now compared to what it was. We never needed to actually see it. A TV show exploring the events of Zero Dawn itself just felt like "It'll be cheaper to film if it's only 50 years in the future rather than trying to recreate the 'new world'"
It's sound a bit like the Indonesia bit in the Last of Us. The absolute most interesting part of a worlds lore is the how it came to be and usually ends up very unsatisfying but it's the thing the lore hounds want the most.
Horizon really did just rip off the panzer dragoon lore and present it is own worst version of it.
Edit: I'm not mad, the director of Guerilla said they used panzer dragoon saga as reference material for killzone 3 so most of the team would have played it. Just has really annoyed me how similar they are and yet I get shouted down by the Horizon fans when I bring it up.
Can't people in tv, film, music, politics, etc. etc. just be normal **** people for a change??
Horizon Zero Dawn TV show potentially scrapped after accusations of toxic workplace by showrunner (on a different show).
From what I remember the show was going to be more about the war against the machines in 2074 or whatever, which seemed to be a ridiculous use of the source material anyway.
Love it! Can't believe the removed some of the cursing! Have it in my wishlist, happy I didn't take the plunge before now. Will pick it up at some point. Original was a fun non-serious popcorn game that I thoroughly enjoyed so playing it in VR should be fun!
LOL well that's one way of announcing they messed up.
Ys: the oath in felghana is getting an updated remaster for modern consoles, although it doesn't look too much different from the PC version that is already available:
I played through it recently on PC and can safely say it might be the greatest action rpg of all time. It's really good.
After loving blood omen I was so pumped for legacy of Kane but just couldn't get into it. Absolutely no idea why I should probably give it another try.
Played it earlier this year. Yeah, a lot of the puzzles are repetitive and just involve shifting blocks around, but such a great game. Have the sequel downloaded on Steamdeck but haven't started cracking into it yet. Must carve out some time to lash into it. I'd played SR1 before but never got the SR2.
Man, legacy of Kain was such a cool game. I remember as a youngfella playing it and thought whoa, this is a fairly mature game 😁
Edit: meant to say i was talking about Blood Omen.
And as is the way of the world, there is some Legacy of Kain news. Legacy of Kain: The Dead Shall Rise is a prequel trilogy based on the origins of Kain. Here's the catch; tis a yet to be written, crowdfunding approach of books... pah!
I don't know what to expect from embraced. There was the absolute cluster **** over the KotOR remaster and then you have the tomb raider remasters. which is one of the all time great remasters.
I think soul reaver needs a remake rather than a remaster. Time hasn't been kind to the game with the cuts to the game being very obvious and there's just way too many terrible block pushing puzzles that everyone seems to forget with the rose tinted glasses on.
Anyway I mentioned Dino Crisis 2 because while the first game is a derivative resident evil clone (but a really great one), DC2 is a really weird game and there's nothing really like it. Maybe onimusha now that I think about it.
Nah. Pretty sure I gave the first a go, realised it wasn't for me and just didn't bother with the series after that. And looking at it now, I don't have the retro eyes to… appreciate the graphics now. If they do a remake I'll pick it up if it releases physical or wait for sub inclusion otherwise. I'd be in no rush to try it tbh. If I want a remake of any game from '99, it's Soul Reaver, and god knows what Crystal Dynamics are doing with it but I'm more worried that Embracer will just shut it all down for no reason.
Did you play Dino Crisis 2? It's worth giving a go as it's a massive departure from the survival horror roots of the original and more like a modern character action game.. It's a lot of fun and feels more like the evolutionary link between survival horror and devil may cry.
Also: who the heck is complaining there’s not enough new games? There’s been enough interesting new games in the first half of this year to keep me occupied well into 2026 if I so wished!
Never played Dino Crisis but let's face it; if they were going to be remaking it, the original wouldn't matter too much. It'd likely be more of a Resident Evil 2 & 3 Remake. Give the RE Engine and Capcom's general quality with games like this, I'd be very excited to try it.
'99 was an excellent year for gaming. Dino Crisis was not part of it for me. Just didn't do it for me at the time.
A trip to solitary confinement will do him no harm. Yes, I am watching Prisoner: Cell Block H.
A Dino Crisis remake would be fantastic. Played the original not so long ago and it’s still drips with tension, not knowing what is around the corner waiting for you. Combat was pretty poor though. A remake with over the shoulder gameplay would be day 1 for me.
I think they recently did a ‘what should we remake next poll’ and Dino Crisis was the clear winner so here’s hoping.
