What was the billing amount or units consumed in each of the sessions, may I ask?

I'm wondering if the card was mistakenly used to terminate the original session (and then bill it) and then start the new session.

One charge was for around 10€ (my one) and the other was around 14€.

I actually think that’s exactly what happened. As I received two emails for the start of charging this is likely what happened. And when the other guys finished, I got the bill.

I am writing here not because of the small amount of money, but because I don't think this should be able to happen. And if it happened to me, I guess it happened to others as well. But does everybody pay attention? I did because that’s all new for me and I used the ESB charger only the second time.

    But does everybody pay attention?

Sure they don't! I inadvertently terminated a guy's session on an Applegreen charger last week as I was too lazy to grug down to see the screen properly and the layout wasn't clear. He had only just started the session so I hunted him down in the shop and had him reconnect it. A lot of it is all down to bad interfaces at the inverters - it's never the customer at fault. 😂

Do keep us posted on that as it seems like a bug. Unfortunately I don't use the ESB chargers regularly enough to try reproduce that issue myself.!

    This ☝🏻

The interface on most chargers is straight from the Windows 8 era, no sense to the layout

Were you dealing with Anna? She seems to do about 90% of the work there, hope she got a pay rise this year

Definitely sounds like a f**k up on the charger and nothing you did on your end. Hopefully Ecars find the issue and correct it and refund you

It's stupid as hell that anyone can stop any session on the AG Chargers. At least with Ionity and Maxol or whatever you need the original card/app account to do that.

Yes it does go to show that there are arseholes in every car make

I wonder would anybody sell me a book of fake parking tickets for the laugh. Let him come back to find one on his windscreen for not charging in a charging bay at a minute after he ended the charge… Would make him think twice

A neighbour of mine used to have a book of colourful cards with the words "Hey arsehole…" and a load of blank lines for you to fill in the details on. He was a keen user of that passive-aggressive method of feedback in the 80's. 😁

Did his tyres get mysteriously slashed a lot by any chance? 😂

As I've mentioned before, you can buy a wheel clamp from Amazon for around €30

I'm not suggesting anything of course, just felt it's an interesting fact 😉

That is a very interesting fact, but how does it relate to my problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,830 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

I always stop charging sessions from my car or the app. Never the machine. Main reason is that it's the same every time, no faffing around with fobs or cards or squinting at a screen in bright sunshine (if we're lucky).

Never underestimate the healing power of spite 😁

It might not fix your problem, but it does create a problem for someone else

    Again, speaking hypothetically

Of course if there was any actual enforcement of charger blocking then it wouldn't be our problem to solve

EV charger screens are the only place you can guarantee sunshine in this country

You could get a tan, but only on a 30x20cm section of skin per day

All the need is a camera matched up with the charging session.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,698 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I'll hold my hand up and say I've done it once. 2 cable Charger in the middle of bays only the front ones marked as EV. Car drives out of spot 1 spot 2 already empty. So l couldn't start. So thinking it was from the last session stopped it. But it was plugged into a EV behind. On a line of cars it wasn't obvious.

But yeah you shouldn't be able to cancel sessions that aren't your own. Messers will just cancel them for the crack.

Behind which you would need people to actually go through the footage. Charging providers aren't going to do this. From their POV, there's no problem, they're getting paid for every kWh provided.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,698 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Not if it's blocked for half the day.

Car parks can automatically do it. Why not charging bays. No economy of scale In guessing.

GDPR for one thing, adding CCTV cameras creates a whole heap of data privacy and retention issues that CPOs probably don't want to bother about

I agree blocked chargers make no money, so it's probably something they'll want to solve. The push at the moment seems to be solving it via legislation versus surveillance

Applegreen already do it in the UK. There signs up saying cameras monitored the bays and anyone not charging for 10 mins or more would receive a penalty charge notice. That's at Michaelwood Services southbound.

It unlikely to be feasible at a single charger site, but should be at their 8 bay hubs.

If they already own the petrol station then it's probably easier. I'd say there'd be a potential issue for Ecars having a section of Blanch shopping centre watched by cameras for example

Applegreen would outsource the management of the carpark to a private operator (in the example given it's Parkingeye).

As it's a private carpark, the penalty charge notice (PCN) issued not a fine, but made to look like one (all private carpark operators do this). The PCN is akin to invoice for a breach of contract on private land.

Essentially its a civil matter and to enforce it they would need sue you for breach of contract, which I'm sure the carpark management/operator does regularly.

Doubtful ESB has control over any of they carparks in which they operate, let alone owning any of them. So its would be up to the land owner or whom ever has control over the land.

I use the card , as it’s much easier than fapping around with an app. No need to look at screen. Just plug in and tap the card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭Meteor67

So, I finally received message from ESB ecars:

They are not reimbursing my money. They checked the logs and can see that both sessions were started from my card. As this is possible I am not entitled for a refund.

All I can say: Whatch what you are doing and check your emails when using there chargers. It might very well be that it was my mistake, but I never had thought I could stop/start someone elses running session and then even being charged for it.

    I have learned my lesson!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,830 ✭✭✭CMOTDibbler

Well in my case it's far easier to stop from the car as the charge port has an unlock button which stops the charge and unlocks the plug. I only use the app if I want to stop the charge when I'm away from the car. And I can do that from either the car's app or the charge provider's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,828 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

That's dreadful I wouldn't be happy with that. So did the other car/card get charged at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,894 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Ah I see now. Other things that work are vaseline for the handle of the plug, doesn't do any damage but the other car owner will get a surprise.

In any case I was facinated that the unit allowed me to charge on Chademo while the CCS was still plugged in, which is more the point of my post

On a matter of principle I would be contacting them every single day and informing them they have 14 days before you instigate a chargeback which will cause their admin dept more trouble. Keep doing this costing them more in manpower. Don't give in to that crack. Seriously why would you have taken the time to contact them over 14eur if it wasnt a mistake by them. Screw them back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,855 ✭✭✭veryangryman

Same. Plus you get the last few seconds of DC from doing that. Gets you more bang for your time.

How can he instigate a chargeback if it was taken from his PAYG money already lodged to his account? I do agree I'd plague the life out of them until I was reimbursed.
