I read the following article this morning. "From August, bus gates will be in operation on Bachelors Walk and Aston Quay in order to restrict drivers from travelling through the city centre."

The quays have always been a pain in the a$$ to use, no matter the time of day… So, how will this effect people?
Maybe the plan is to block everything and cause chaos. Thus proving that the original plan was a good one after all.
Or maybe it's purely pandering to certain lobbyists. Or….. oh I just don't know anymore.
The only cars that would be able to turn right off O'Connell Bridge onto Eden Quay would be cars coming from Burgh Quay which either went around the triangle of D'Olier Street, College Street and Westmoreland Street, or which turned directly onto the Bridge from Burgh Quay - there are no other routes available to car traffic.
I know this is entirely predictable in this backwards country, but it is still so disheartening to see DCC back down so easily to shitey vested interests and a clueless junior minister. All the vested interests and the minister (who's from Clondalkin, one of the areas with awful bus travel times) should be forced to take one of the quays using routes like the C1, G1, 69 etc at peak times and see how long it takes a bus to crawl from OCB to Heuston Station for themselves. If they still claim with a straight face that such journey time is acceptable, I would be very surprised.
Also, how the hell does anyone think a metro will ever be built if we can't even give relatively simple public transport priority measures a fair shake? will be objection after objection to anything/anyone that dares slightly discommode the precious car driver and a useless fudge of a compromise the end result. As has happened time & again with this interminable busconnects craic.

Think Higgins is just front for bigger fg voices looking for car lobby vote. Appears dcc fg cllrs are taking the party line asking for more time. Others incld SF/ SD/ Greens are telling her to take a hike.
How can this happen if it was democratically voted on though?
The car park association are probably paying people off but surely they can't overturn a vote??
I'm a touch less pessimistic after reading about these changes, although they still shouldn't pass — cars can't continue from Bachelors Walk onto Eden Quay, and I think the traffic coming down this way and intentionally turning left onto OCS is really minimal, so this will continue to be an ersatz bus gate.
However the fact that cars can turn right from OC Bridge onto Eden Quay does mean enforcement will be much more difficult, as the temptation to 'sneak' across from Bachelors Walk to Eden Quay will be very high.
Making the restrictions 7am to 7pm is whatever, but as we know it'll just eventually have to be 24/7 again.
It's a shitshow. The right turn onto Eden is bananas, 7 to 7 is meaningless on the quays, the area is busy well into the evening. And it won't be respected anyway. Cars will drive onto Eden Quay regardless. Allowing the turn onto OCS means a lane is to be reserved for cars the whole way so no public realm scheme.
An enquiry into how a brown envelope bypasses the democratic process is required.
You've got this backwards; it is inter city traffic that is being blocked by local Dublin traffic.
What are you on about? The M50 is packed at rush hour with commuters, not inter-city travellers. Unless you have some data to suggest otherwise?....

That’s exactly what I said! Congestion on the M50 is caused by Dublin traffic. Building another motorway for the small amount of inter-city traffic is a waste (based on volumes) and would need to be built a long way from Dublin to avoid the road just becoming a second M50 for people living in/near Dublin.

The council management have presented watered down proposals following discussions with the disability groups.
The CEO stated that he wanted to examine the economic data that the business groups sent in before making a final decision.
Councillors representing 2/3 appx of elected representatives on the council expressed their wish that the proposals be implemented in August.
We still haven’t clarity on which set of proposals will be put forward to be implemented.
We will have to wait and see.

Typical, actually enraged by this. It's what most people who use the city centre want and yet it has been scuppered at the last minute by politicians who are obviously being pressured by the car lobby.
At least we'll have even more signs and poles in the city with all sorts of arrows, times and restriction information.

As someone noted above, the level of new signage which will be needed for this updated plan will be beyond ridiculous. Have they learned nothing from the College Green bus gate which has since been made 24/7?

The CEO has also said that he wants to look at the economic data from the retailer groups before he makes a final decision on the timing, which may not happen for several weeks yet.

In total only three buildings on the 50m stretch of Aston Quay would not have direct private vehicle access, from 7am-7pm.
