Why are the government intent on forcing through the EU Migration Pact?

Why are the government intent on forcing through the EU Migration Pact, when we alongside Denmark have an opt out? Denmark are using their opt out as per their citizens wishes, and our government is going against our wishes by not using our opt out. Why are they going against the Irish citizens and doing something that the majority in Ireland don't agree with?

Last night the government once more showed their true colours on this as seen below.

I don't know if it necessarily needs a referendum, but it should have been given far more debating time and consideration at both committee and Dail stages.

Also, its far more serious issue than potholes, so no need for flippant and disingenuous comparisons.

Respective benefits are irrelevant when someone can exhaust their chances in one place and then hop across to the other to begin again. Without deals and pacts there will be no centralisation, or sharing of information, and no agreements to take people back.

We are giving away yet more autonomy to the EU. The Irish people should have the final say on transfer of sovereignty like this. What could be more fundamental than control of your own borders?

We won't even be able to decide what a "safe" country is anymore for ouselves if we do this.

We will never get back the sovereignty we give away. Others will decide for us.

So those who support this can never complain again when the Commission speaks on behalf of this country in supporting Israel or whatever topic of the day is.

It's difficult to see Ireland getting a benefit from it.

The recent elections and the support for those implementing the pact rather disagree with you.

Regardless there is a reason we have far more referendums then other European countries in relation to European treaties. About the only exception is switzerland with its occasionally difficult direct democracy. The courts so far merely don't agree about this transferring sovereignty and thus requiring a referendum. It is just a procedural pact.

Do the naysayers not realise if we opt out we have no legal mechanism to return people to other member states? If you do, fair enough, debate the provisions of the pact. But if you are out, you are out.

The pact also introduces harmonisation of previsions across states reducing incentives to move form one state to another. I thought this would be something that would please some given the insistence it is conditions granted to asylum seekers relative to other countries is what attracts them here.

Also Amnesty and other organisations that support migrants are against this pact, so really, ask yourself are you against this because you understand it or because "EU Bad, goberment bad"

This is a bit more important than fixing potholes.

So if we change the people who represent us at the next election (which is only a few months away) and say of the 79 who voted in favour maybe 25 are not in the next dail can we reverse this decision?

If it was proper representative democracy that is what should happen as a long term decision would have been reached by a group of people who are no longer representing us so really that decision should be null and void.

You have a bizarre view of a "proper democracy". Every new government doesn't start with a blank slate where they remove every single law passed by previous governments for plainly obvious reasons. We don't also annul every international treaty every time we have an election.

It may be too late but by 2035 we wont be in the E.U any longer.

If it was put to the electorate now there is zero chance this migration pact would of passed.

Wars have literally been fought down the centuries between countries to prevent the handover of less autonomy and sovereignty than this country is surrendering with that vote by our representatives tonight.

This is not an independent country anymore. Don't get me wrong, it hasn't been for quite a few years but to see it play out now in this way is sad.
