As part of the coalition deal, Michael Martin got the choice of who to recommend for the position. Even with that he discussed with the cabinet before annoucing it.

What are you hoping for in the giveaway vote-buying-attempt budget yourself Highlighter? 🙂
And Deputy Party leader last week (that post was vacant since Golfgate). He was the whip and director of local elections campaign. The next leader of FF according to Martin.
All the very best, Jack.
Steady as she goes to a bumper budget day in September/October where working people will get more of their hard earned cash in their pockets and away from Revenue's grasp.
Is there that little depth in the political parties now?
Jack Chambers appointed minister for finance. WTF?
Was he nominated by FFG to replace Mairead McGuinness, honestly I'm not sure how this position works, advertised on Irish Jobs 😁
Martin could well be the next Taoiseach. McGrath is now removed as a potential FF leader. FF could well be the largest party in the Dail by November. FG are in big trouble now with half their TDs resigning. The rehab of FF has only taken 17 years.
He'll be a big loss to FF and the government given the lack of real cabinet level talent in both these days. McGrath & Pascal as a duo have been the most competent part of the government. But he will do well for Ireland on the EU stage at least, hopefully.
Thats also one more by-election now that the government has incentive to avoid with an early election in November.
I was going to respond to the post and didn't, I am happy I didn't because you put it a lot more eloquent than I could ever have 😂
Your post rather suggests that you are unaware that the Irish government appoints its own EU Commissioner. Because if you knew that then you'd realise your post makes absolutely zero sense.
Jobs for the boys. Policies would never be influenced by such
Looks like Michael McGrath is set to be Ireland’s next EU commissioner
Sure it's virtually FG policy. Almost every utterance by one of their ministers will have a swipe at SF included, or an attempt to play the "but, but SF" card.
I've no time for SF myself, but that's the FG way. It always comes across as flailing and desperate.
I see Leo the leak is back in the news with the SIPO investigation to resume following a high court decision. I wonder will Simon the Leak offer a comment on that.
At least FG gave SIPO those extra powers that they have been promising since 2011....oh wait, FG just lie about reform...silly me.
Why do you want an election now? It is the middle of the summer, people on holidays, miss the vote.
There are pieces of legislation planned which will have to start again if there is an election. I haven't seen any good reason for an election.
No need for an election. Normal parties change leaders regularly.
Some people vote for independents because they don't like the parties or their local TD being under the whip…of a party led by a leader they don't like.
It certainly does. The party leader carries a lot of weight.
PBP get a ridiculous amount of media coverage for being an extremist (on the Irish political spectrum) party that gets 1-3% of votes in elections. They got 1.5% and 1.8% in the locals and Euros just gone respectively.
Yet they still somewhow got invited to national media debates when candidates like Ciaran Mullooly (who had enough support to actually get elected) struggle.
It really shows the media's cultural left-wing bias.
If people voted based on party leaders then independents wouldn't exist
Not really, you're bringing the American style "personality" politics into Ireland. It doesn't work well.
The party leader plays a big role. They are seen as representing the party whole. I just think, (wishfully) that it's something a party might consider when in government.
Change of leadership is irrelevant. You don't elect the leadership, or the government or the taoiseach for that matter. You elect a TD(s) to represent your local area in the issue of national governance.
No. I'd like if this one held one now.
They do vote for a party heavily based on the leader though.
I was just wondering what people thought. I think two out of three warrants a discussion on it. There is no crisis or scandal capable of rocking this government.
As in, if a government party changes leader, you want a new election each time? The public doesn't vote for a party leader.
The one party who had the worst recent election outcomes likely wont leave their position, but that's due to other factors (no internal dissent allowed, no leader elections).
There will be an election in the next 9 months, likely November.
Yet I'm in a government thread, asking if there should be a GE called due to two out of three coalition parties changing leadership?
If I wanted to talk in circles about SF, there's a thread for that.
Someone has to lead the oppposition. Oddly enough with their recent 10% showing in the local/EU elections that would be SF
Same person scolded me for referencing FG on the SF thread.
They have SF on the brain. They can't help bringing them up constantly on the Government thread.
