Every store I've been in shows Cans €10 and, in smaller print, Deposit 60cent. Shops are obliged to display this. If your store doesn't then perhaps point it out to them. Or perhaps you just didn't notice it.
Yeah, possible we didnt notice it. Will check next time.
It still means the price has increased though. 10 euro used to purchase the container and the beer. Now 10 euro only pays for the beer.
You'll get the deposit back. Much as I dislike the scheme, it is a Deposit and not another price increase.
If you cant get your deposit back then it is a price increase.
Yes that's how it works, maybe you just didn't see the deposit sign.
I think it's more transparent as it is, you can clearly see the price of the beer.
The way DRS is set up you are supposed to bring the empty cans to an RVM and get the deposit back.
Having said that there are many reports of problems with the RVMs so it might not be so easy.
I haven't failed to get a deposit back yet.
Well isn't that fuckin fantastic for you?
Me too.
Absolutely. Not sure what your gripe is.
I dont drive and get my groceries delivered. It is not feasible for me to return my bottles and cans, short of getting a taxi to do so.
So for me, the deposit return scheme is simply a price increase.
Its great that people are getting their deposits back. That's a core principle of the social contract you have with the provider.
Things had slowly been improving for me till today.
I went today and 2 items that I paid a deposit on were not accepted. I happened to have a very small bag of returns today so that was about 10 percent of my overall returns today.
The previous time it was about five percent of the bag that werent accepted, before that about 20 percent, before that 30 percent and before that about 40 percent. So things had been steadily improving till today.
There were a number occasions whereby the machines werent working or full for one reason or another (same location).
I've ended up putting those percentages in a recycle bin either in the shop or at home.
That's my lived experience of the scheme as well as all the price rises on top and of course net negative effect on our environment, no incentives for producers to reduce production and a complete lack of regard for the general population who aren't mobile and/or don't regularly go to a shop or indeed those who use public spaces.
So I am happy that some people are getting their deposits returned, cos fück me that's the absolute basic fundamental concept of the scheme.
Dublin based folk… has anyone found particular store RVM that takes the small 250ml bottles like fruit shoots? Or places taking manual returns?
RVM gobbled my bottle, then flashed up a red Processing Error notice, and went back to standby mode, as though nothing happened.
What type of bottle?
Tomato Juice 1l. I sensed the RVM smirking too
Thats a weird one to fail. Ive returned 1l orange juice plastic bottles ok.
Went down yesterday to my local Dunnes with my big bag of cans.
Both machines out of order.
Had to walk to Lidl where I got them returned but only noticed afterwards that you can only use the receipt in the Lidl store - which is not where I shop.
What a fcukin joke this scheme is and we will never get rid of it.
It’s the start of something new. As it develops then you’ll see inter-shop exchanges. At the moment you can only redeem in the RVM branch. Collecting a couple of cans from one of the local bins this morning, a lady remarked how her 14 year-old son is now an expert at uncrushing cans and bottles. Brilliant! 🤩
You could have cashed the vouchers, then used the money wherever you like.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of ReTurn, where your loss is their gain!!!
Most shops are not even offering inter-branch exchanges, you can only use the vouchers in the store you brought the containers back to. That's a disgrace for the likes for Dunnes, Tesco, Aldi, Lidi etc that are not franchises.
There's nothing to suggest they will bring it down the line. We can hope, but there have been no reports that it's on the way that I've seen.
🤣
This cant be a serious post.
Last weekend i went to an agricultural festival in the midlands, decent sized event. A local sports team had arranged seperate bins to collect returns for charity, and had put effort into distinct bins, signage etc, fair play. And they were being generally used correctly which was great to see.
We bought three items from two seperate food vans (of five there) and all of them were from the UK, no return logo. Which i guess means no return. No deposit.
I imagine those volunteers will be rather disappointed to find that instead of funding for a new pitch, they instead have to find a way to get rid of multiple bags of financially worthless recyclables.
Ironic that they cant actually get rid of them in our New Amazing Environmentally Responsible way, as the machines would just spit them back out, even if there was no refund available for it (coz its all about the environment of course).
Over to you kids, thanks for the effort, no money for you, get rid of your own crap.
I have cans of uk drinks here that have no logo but return a deposit when you put them in a machine. The logo is just an indicator but the barcode is the thing that's scanned.
If you weren't charged a deposit how would anyone expect to get a refund from an RVM ?
Unless as ste says the barcode works.
The stallholders were breaking the law if they sold out of scope containers after June 1.
Tough on the kids if it doesn't work out but they are on the right track.
They will be able to leave the non paying cans at a local civic amenity site so at least they will be recycled.
There is detailed information about International Barcodes. I have seen the Self Adhesive Logo on some cans. A white sticker, the size of the regular logo.
https://re-turn.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Webinar-on-International-Barcodes-09.11.2023.pdf
"Self adhesive logo labels are also available from Re-turn to help support this differentiation."
Can you report this law breaking to the guards? Has a unit been established with the guards to police this law?
I've just come back from a show myself whereby the stall holders were northern. No idea if a deposit was paid but a can was circa two fifty from what I saw the few of the discarded cans I spotted didnt have a re-turn logo on them.
Whats the process flow here - who do I report them to? Who were they? Will they be there tomorrow? What's the follow up like?
It is a price increase.
If it was 10 euro for beer ÷ cans yesterday and today it is 10 euro for beer only, then the scheme has delivered a price increase.
Yep, agreed.
But the deposit scheme should have been incorporated into, and not on top of, the pre-deposit price.
If you go to a supermarket and pay a €2 deposit to use a trolley which you get back after you return the trolley do you also class this as a price increase on your shopping trip?
Not a huge fan of the scheme either but can see the reason behind it and it's not going anywhere.
