Talk about out of the frying pan … and this is the interview he baled out on the D-Day celebrations for; if it was some puff piece, slam dunk chat that boosted his prospects, then at least you could understand the political calculation here.
And note: that's the example he did give, 'cos you heard his flailing about trying to thinking of a specific beyond his "lots of things!" handwave. Clearly he realised in real-time he had walked himself into a corner.
Plus, I had heard overall this interview was a disaster and Sunak got tetchy over his wealth - so there's more to come!
"I didn't even have Sky TV growing up" is something I could picture ending up as a hipster t-shirt. It's surely going to be a meme if nothing else.
Sunak and Starmer are on sky tonight for their second debate, Starmers gonna have a field day with this.
I wonder will Sunak bleet on about 2 grand for the whole night again
Starmer will be more ready for this one. Expect a mauling
Hopefully Beth Rigby will be a more robust moderator and not allow Sunak to shout over Starmer like last weeks debate.
Thanks for confirming it was Beth, my heart skipped a beat praying it wouldn't be KB
Afaik, its not a debate format like last week. It's 25 minutes of Starmer being questioned by Rigby and the audience, followed by 25 minutes of Sunak being questioned. The other won't be present during the questioning.
Thats my understanding, as always I'm potentially wrong! But I think there are just two traditional debates this time - the one last week and one on BBC later this month.
The easy answer to all this is controlling the mic
In the UK, it would make you underclass in the eyes of people like Sunak and his voters - it was seen as something that only layabout scum had - sitting at home all day watching and betting on football, of all things * drops monocle * - pretty much until Film4, BBC Arena and BBC Horizons (BBC3/BBC4) launched and Sky bought the cricket and some rugby rights.
Indeed he didn't really go without, his parents could well afford id bet but thought it was for the lessers…..
We only got around that prejudice - sort of - by the equivalent parents here absolutely having cable so they could get BBC and Channel 4; and that cable happened to come with Sky1 and MTV.
Brings me back to the days in my teens when the picture was scrambled but i could pick up the commnetary of the England tour in the West Indies.
It wasn't just Sky, ITV was also considered to be "common". My wife's parents wouldn't allow her and her siblings to watch ITV, just BBC. Class runs deep in the UK.
Yup
Just checked and you're right which could make it even more interesting depending on Audience questions
Note to Sunak: Don't wear the Rolex and/or the silver tie clip if you are going to bring that up
😀
Well, if they could afford the fees for Winchester - one of the top 3 UK public schools - then they could afford sky. A nice reversal of the "if they can afford sky they can afford food" trope.
As Jess Philips says, why doesn't he just own it? Why is he trying to portray himself as having a hard upbringing? There is nothing wrong with having money, and certainly nothing wrong if your parents have it.
What is tripping Sunak up is his apparent need to portray himself as the common man. It comes across as fake because it is.
Own, it, and like Philips says to say that he wants that life for everyone. He wants everyone to have the opportunities that he has had. That if they cant afford things at the moment he is working on making their lives better.
You don't need to have been homeless for example, to empathise and understand the issues with it.
It's all they have at this stage: there's not a single pivot on which they can attack Labour except this made-up scaremongering … the irony being the only reason people might be terrified of such a hike is 'cos the Tories already squeazed the working stiffs of the nation beyond breaking as it stands.
You hate to draw comparisons, but say what you will about Trump part of his appeal has been the fact he wields his wealth like a cudgel; people are drawn to him because of his vulgar displays of wealth and status - not despite of it. You'd wonder if Sunak would fare better if he just took more of an aggressive approach about his wealth, owning it.
Because it makes him look elitist. To be clear, he is absolutely elitist. I don't know if you remember this?
That's Cameron and Johnson at Eton. Cameron desperately tried to play down his background and sound more relatable. Johnson never had to deal with the results, predictably.
The problem with Phillips' comment is that he doesn't want life to be like that for everyone. Quite the opposite. He wants wealth, power and influence concentrated in an upper class that is as unfettered as possible in doing what it wants, usually patronage and wealth extraction. All of his actions point towards this. Everyone else exists to enrich this upper class.
As for your comment on the homesless, the obvious thing to do would be to seek expert advice from drugs charities, homelessness charities, former and current homeless people and the relevant civil servants. Again, he doesn't care about this at all.
Finally, the single best way to create opportunity is by increasing the availability of education. The Conservatives have introduced T-levels and increased funding for apprenticeships but they also decimated the schools budget during austerity and hiked tuition fees such that students will face a lifetime of debt for something their parents received or free or at a much lower cost.
Trump's largesse though is part of the US culture, and such flashiness can be a turnoff in the UK.
The old idea of an Oxbridge graduate being more trustworthy of governance because of an educational advantage doesn't wash like it used to. Johnson might be the last PM to elected for his verbosity.
Led by Donkeys are at it again:
It's their latest expose on the so-called "think-tanks" of Tufton Street. Senior figures have been donating heavily to the Tories who are always happy to take dirty money.
A debate only privileged kids will get to see 🤣
Sky News have a live feed on their Youtube channel.
Sky News is on Freeview/Freesat (and even Saorview here - they do really want it to have broad coverage); but I do hope he gets poked about that one on-air.
That said, I'd guess this is a pre-record.
If I remember correctly they were so concerned by that photo that reproduction of it is now illegal in the UK.
I know lads. It was a joke.
Jeez no, not a pre-record. Sky have been flogging it as 'live from Grimsby' all week. (probably on 60 second delay to prevent any 'that nice Mr Farage will stop the coloureds' comments getting on air).
That seems spectacularly unlikely to be true.

Reproduction doesn't mean it's completely gone just that can't be made into souvenir t-shirts down in Camden and the likes. Also you are running a copyright risk putting in the media.
I baggsie "Proud of our record"
