I thought it might be useful to create a new thread to comment and analyse the Local Election results.

Well it's still a mess and we still have the prospect of large tented encampments near the airport. Something we've not seen before.
But slashing payments to Ukrainians, introducing a means test for asylum seekers on their payment, ending accom for Ukrainians after 90 days, tougher language etc etc.
All of these harsh measures have passed through without any opposition and seem to reflect the public mood to curb refugees coming here.
A friend was telling me last year his daughter was so pro Sein Fein and then finished collage and got a job came into Sinn Fein as she would lose money
All these nutters will be gone at the next election.
is that like the way software vendors promise 'all the bugs will be fixed in the next release'?
Considering he doesn't turn up for council meetings it doesn't matter how many votes he has.
He just didn't deliveroo for FF ☺
Pretty sure you can't hold two seats in Ireland.
Nice to see that muppet Alan Sweeney coming last.
SF 500 votes out of 10k votes, how the f did they get there.
No but you can nominate a preferred candidate co-opt for your second seat
Tony Fitzgerald and Damian Boylan elected to Cork City Council
He'll be fine with the 370k from the gofundme that was set up for him
I think in the locals as long you not in the same constituency you can
Edit sorry just realised it was seats you mentioned not running. As the other say they would co opt one but would that be the same if in 2 different counties
i know it's still very early days (7% of seats filled), but this does look weird for now:
SF on a single seat with the government parties on 46.
Because the opposite to the status quo right now is a bunch of anti-immigration mongrels who only spread hatred and wish to stoke up unrest. They are not the answer.
No media outing for Mary Lou today incidentally.
I was listening to my local radio station and the reporter was talking with a candidate after a count. Ask him about him getting 92 votes. What followed was a 10 minute rant that was so fun
Weren't SF in the low 30s at one stage in the polls?
It looks like its going to be a disaster for them. This was probably their best chance to become the leading party in the country. I know its only local elections for now, but it doesn't bode well for the general election.
Maybe need new leadership?
I wouldn't extrapolate too much to the national stage out of this tbh. They lost a massive amounts of seats in 2019 too and then a year later stormed the polls everywhere. The three SF candidates running in my area for example are greenhorn nobodies and that doesn't fly in a local election. Think they have less than 1000 votes between the three of them.
No one likes the government, but the alternative is even worse.
The majority of the opposition are full-on, left-wing, hardcore Marxist socialists.
It could also be that people are fearful to vote for far-left Marxists like Sinn Fein.
Perhaps most of them thought their stay was just temporary and she and a handful were the only ones interested in involving themselves in local politics? Then again, they could have been really interested and all voted for the relevant Healy-Rae. 😛
Yeah it's still the same. You can only hold one seat. You have three days to decide which one you want to take, otherwise whichever one you got the most 1st preferences is given by default.
125.—(1) Where, at an election, a person is elected as a member for two or more local authorities and section 14 of the Local Government Act 2001 would be applicable to such person, then the person shall, within the period of three days after the return is made of persons elected to be members of those local authorities, by notice in writing signed by the person and delivered to the clerk or secretary of each of those local authorities, declare which one of those authorities the person chooses to represent, and if such declaration is not so delivered within the said period, the person shall, at the end of the said period, be deemed to have chosen to represent the local authority of the local electoral area in respect of which the person received the greatest number of first preference votes.
FF/FG/GP political, economic and social policies ensure their cumulative voter bases of 40-45% are looked after in order to compose a government while everyone else goes to hell and it is reflective in the results at the polling booths. Don't underestimate the shy FF/FG/GP factor that is out there when you are chatting to people are supposedly 'angry and disappointed at the government' who on Friday in complete privacy in the polling booth have gone and happily scribbled '1' next to a FF/FG/GP candidate
Sinn Féin and namely Mary Lou McDonald have capitulated not solidifying themselves at 30%+ in the polls by being staggeringly out-of-touch as a supposed opposition, you can say similar for current joke that is Labour and the Social Democrats - what are these supposed parties of opposition are actually doing to oppose and demonstrate policies away from the current FF/FG/GP status quo in Ireland? Independents splintered in all political directions could well exceed Sinn Féin's percentage by Monday and realistically will be the main opposition block, no wonder this FF/FG/GP government are going to be getting giddy tonight at the prospect stinking things up in their jobs for another 5 years until 2029, yes folks another 5 years of Helen McEntee and Roderic O'Gorman!
Barring anything unforeseen I'm expecting Harris to call for the General Election in mid-November straight after after October's vote buying budget bonanza with Sinn Féin to put their heads in the sand to stick with Mary Lou with the exact same FF/FG/GP policies not tacking immigration, housing, health, cost of living while waving their Palestinian flags
God allmighty, what are you smoking? Every time I turn on the Radio its either Pearse Doherty or Mary Sue. And you always know when the Morning Ireland crew are interviewing a shinner: they let them speak without interruption. But an FG or FF interviewee can barely get a word in edgeways before they get interrupted, often quite aggressively.
Cool thanks
This is the same conversation that has gone in circles in Ireland for decades.
IMO nothing will change until the irish voter changes. The irish political parties have no incentive to change.
SF ran too many candidates and stayed quite on important issues, changed stance on the referendums after they failed despite pushing for yes
I don't think everything is fantastic, but for the majority of people things are pretty much fine. And the alternative is poor standard. Hence the results.
You're probably in a bit of a bubble too as most people I work with don't want SF, or any of the loony right in charge!
Well they fix the bugs, but doing so usually creates more bugs.
