How's the silage ground traveling this year?
Grazed off? Slurry out? Fert spread?
Or is it like a bog at the moment, a good year for rewetting.
ah there’s a difference alright, they still use the lotus name on the lotus type ones. The sales rep will tell you, there’s a savage price difference between the lely lotus and the straight tine fella Tedder. I bought a fella/fendt straight time type one this year and it tedds really well, even in heavy crops
Looks a great Job in fairness and the Lely version of it will have hooked tines is it? Is it the hooked tines design that drives up the price of the Lely one or just the its a heavier machine overall. Say you're moving through some grass with it. Had to use the Lely lotus 300 last year to get some hay and the rain coming in fast it was a pain
do about 8- 10 acres an hour depending on the crop. Plenty Good enough for us
That's fast enough for me, hopefully next year I will be able to get one
if he’s an index 4 for k then he’s not supposed to put it out other than slurry.
Yes sorry if that's the case but I understand it's too much p not k he has plus not enough slurry to do ground there's no restrictions on buying k as far as I'm aware second cut will use 100 units roughly of k
For 2nd cut, how long do u wait after slurry application before spreading compound fertiliser (cut sward)?
you can spread straight away. It’s only urea you need to worry about with slurry because it needs oxygen in the soil to convert to usable N
Thanks, how many units N recommended for a good crop of 2nd cut?
60-70 units per acre. Generally go 60 with slurry andbignore tge N in slurry. Not sure this year as we have had nice rain on the slurry spread with tge dribble bar. Will probably get 10units plus per acre out of it so I may turn the spreader slightly down
I go with around 2300 gals of slurry and then 50 units or a little over per acre gives me a nice crop once we don't get drought conditions as we are very close to the rock here, which has its pros and cons.
Has more pros and cons lately anyway 😅
Find 50 plenty as well for second cut bar you require a large crop and that has its disadvantages as well
must have silage accessory of silage 2024 round here.
Crow banger.
I prefer a .17 hmr myself
Could you cut Tuesday and bale Wednesday?
You could be as well to get it done before the weather fully breaks on thurs god knows when It will come good again. I have silage down so will have to let it dry off tomorrow and bale it tomorrow evening or Tuesday very frustrating but what can I do. Also want to mow a paddock in front of the cows in the morning just to get it out of the way
Well lads debating whether to cut 7 acres of silage here this afternoon/evening and try get it baled Wednesday before the rain arrives.
Met Eireann forecasting scattered showers in my area (Galway) today, tomorrow and Wednesday before the rain really arrives on Wednesday night.
It's either chance it or wait for next fine spell - will mull over it till after work anyway.
Anyone else in same scenario ?
Next fine spell looks like it's going to be 2 weeks away. If it's 7 acres I would be putting the mower on now and knocking it while lining up the contractor
I am leaning that way alright. 3 acres is proper meadow and the other 4 are stuff that went too strong to graze.
Ring contractor this morning. Doesn't know whether he'll get to me for pit silage before Friday.
I rang my man last Tuesday, he mowed it today. Pick up tomorrow or Wednesday. Great drying out now
Just put 32 acres first cut in pit and covered this evening. Happy days. Slurry out in next few days and then take it easy for the summer and enjoy a holiday with the kids before I start finding things to do for the winter
I rang him last week to say I was on for going this week. Too much first cut on still.
last of it mowed this evening. Being raked and baled tomorrow, Hopefully another 200+ bales. We’ll be half way there then with silage requirements
I did my best to blind you with the front work lights at the cross roads.
was that at the top of our road ? 😅
Was. I'm seeing what it's like in distant lands.
A blade broke on the harvester here and went up through the machine, just back motoring now after 3 hours.
The weather luck is on your side
