My gig of the year last year (well, them and Whores a few months later) i didn't think they'd be back so soon. Very happy with this one.

With only a little knowledge of Whores i travelled to see them last autumn. They were brilliant ( good bands support too - God Alone esp comes to mind). I missed Weedeater last time so should get there in July. Cheers for the heads up
Limerick has the big top at the milk market which I belive is 1,000 but could be more and king John's castle is 2,500 capacity
I specifically stated a standing gig in April. Neither Limerick venues have been used in Spring for 6/7 years. Big Top is Autumn only and King John’s is Summer. Both venues excellent btw.
I just remembered Arthur Lee and Love doing Forever Changes (with strings and brass) at Glastonbury 2003. Stupendous.

And I get that it can be predictable but I’m often seeing artists I never thought I’d see doing albums that are very significant to me. Artists often play the albums out of order or interspersed with other material. All I need now is Talking Heads to return with Remain in Light and then I’ll happily give up on those shows.
Plus with "whole album" concerts you get to see songs played that are rarely played live by the artists. Like David Gray doing white ladder and playing songs like nightblindness, which isn't exactly a song you pull out of there bag during an encore.
It's even better however when the album is themed (Dare I even say a concept) like yoshimi is. Roger waters has been touring 'Dark side' for decades in different guises.

Id much rather see You Set the Scene dropped in when youre not expecting it (like he did at Glasto 04) than knowing its going to be played in 3 songs time 17 minutes from now.
You want to be at a gig where you're afraid to go for a piss in case you miss a banger.
Water's The Wall tour was unbelievably good. The stage was amazing.
Is there any reason why the Black Box in Galway is not used for more gigs? 600 capacity, which is nicely inbetween the Roisin & Leisureland. Jake Bugg is playing there this summer but other than Calvin Harris & Disclosure in years gone by I cannot remember too many gigs taking place there.
Big top is not autumn only, had gig earlier this year and last
cause it’s hard work to book concerts that will sell 600 tickets in the 4th major city in ireland and that artists will accept the associated fees. I.E someone who could easily sell 600 in Galway would probably be at Olympia/vicar level in Dublin and accepting a fee of 1/3 or 1/2 of Dublin just might not make any sense.
What gigs took place there this Spring or last?
For anyone who missed out on Chris Stapleton's 3 Arena show, Live Nation just announced that his All American Roadshow tour with Marty Stuart is doing an extra night at London's O2 on 24 Oct. Hate the place so I'm still hoping to get my hands on a last minute single for 3 Arena - smaller but a million
times better
It’s mainly a theatre, used all of July for the Arts festival and the week beforehand. Enda Walsh often premieres his plays there (Grief is a Thing With Feathers, etc). A lot of dance performances at the venue and Druid Theatre use it for their biggest productions. Craft markets also there in December. The Town Hall Theatre runs it and put on different events that are beyond their 400 capacity.
For gigs it’s mainly folk-orientated and not a 600 but an 800 capacity. It’s used several times a year - Adrienne Lenker of Big Thief played in mid-April and Jake Bugg is on in two weeks. In the last 3/4 years others to play include Damien Dempsey, Villagers (twice), Billy Bragg, Lisa O’Neill, Coronas, Steve Earle, Radie Peat, The Scratch, etc. Good acoustics, and a decent enough venue like Leisureland but they’re both stripped down with little of note to them.
Saw Future Islands in the Black Box and it was an excellent gig - but by god is it the most depressing venue known to man. Plonked at the end of a car park - must be weird for travelled artists on the drive up to it
Lyra was there in March and I think another but can't remember, Johnny Marr was to be there this month but moved due to demand, cant remember the 2023 gigs last spring /summer but there was definitely some
if Lyra was there on March that’s the first Spring gig at the Big Top in six years. Johnny Marr in late June is a Summer gig. We’re talking about April venues.
Yep, it looks like a dump, the facade is also poor and it’s the car park behind IMC, Elverys, Smyths, etc. Fine when you get inside but as you say……..
Postmodern jukebox, Hudson Taylor, Ian brown, James Vincent mcmorrow and I'm sure a few more have all played it between March April and May on the last few years
Ian Brown hasn’t played Limerick in the past five years. He had a tour here cancelled a few years back cos of his tinfoil hat anti-vax stuff. He didn’t play the Big Top.
Hudson Taylor scheduled in 2020 and cancelled.
PJ and McMorrow scheduled but unclear whether they went ahead. But if Lyra played then you’re right, they could have opened up for the Flaming Lips. The only gigs I’ve seen advertised for there this year are the Libertines, Jenny Greene & Amble in Sept and Nov. I get notifications from Dolans as it’s a pretty easy trip down from Galway.

Is the venue good? Been to most others in Limerick but not the Big Top. Pals loved Peter Hook in the tent last year and I’ll be seeing the Libertines there in September.
It is a great venue, good sound, holds about 1300, city centre so close to bars/restaurants.
Have seen plenty of excellent gigs there and the gigs are all year round. They are not as plentiful now as King Johns Castle is in use and it holds about 1500 more
