This has nothing to do with club, I've previously said that some regular players need to be rested during this tour and give others a chance.
YOU mentioned Beirne, I replied that I think he should be rested.
This is the Ireland thread, resting Beirne or any other international player at the start of next season will do nothing for the player pool for Ireland.
Peter o mahony will be captain
He shouldn't be going either
Maby but thats how we select. Hes health and not retiring
This is a huge tour for Ireland, no chance Beirne will be rested.
he can get a rest at start of next season if required
Win today, win tomorrow is the job of the international coach.
If he rests players and Ireland get hammered in SA then the press and everyone online will be after the coaching team
Look at Goodman who hasn't even started and he is getting question marks over him because of a final for Leinster
The same people posting here about resting players will be the same people gunning for the coachs if they lose
I understand that but I'm saying we should be using the first set of friendlies after a RWC cup and a 6Ns win to rest a few players and add a few to the pool.
Rested to keep them fresh for what though? There isn't another Ireland match until November 8.
I'm aware. We're not "resting" our best lock on a tour to the World Champions. The only exceptions are going to be players that need some kind of off-season surgery. As it is Hendo won't be travelling so there will be space there.
They've had a long season, started before the RWC with warm up games, then RWC, then club rugby, then 6Ns, then club rugby.
Why not rest them, it had the added value as it give the coaches an opportunity to increase their player pool and still have time to revert to old faithfuls for the AIs & the 6Ns
It's true for nerd above, if you're in the Ireland Squad & healthy, you're playing.
The observation that 3 years out from the next World Cup campaign we have the opportunity to give some of the next players in line a chance to build experience has some merit obviously but in the given circumstances where we underachieved at the World Cup and the disappointment of not achieving the grand slam double I think there is an appreciable amount of pressure on Ireland now to get a series win in South Africa.
I think come the Autumn internationals we will be under pressure to beat New Zealand in our opening fixture, and then Arg, Fiji and Aus are fixtures we have grown to expect to win at home. As New Zealand will be first up I think there won’t be any experimentation against South Africa, the coaches will want to use the tour as a chance to get the team in perfect working order to set themselves up for that match which will be an real grudge match considering the way we exited the World Cup.
The chance to beat both of the World Cup finalists this year I’m sure is a hugely motivating opportunity for the players and coaches.
TLDR: We won’t be resting anyone as we want to win these matches right now more than we want to develop players for the future.
Also, there is just going to be a natural level of turnover in the squad anyway. Like I said, we are missing one of the 4 WC locks for sure as it is. There will be opportunities for others to tour and potentially play.
+1
International coaches have limited matches, they all count so it'll be best or v close to best 15 starting I'd imagine.
Professional players they should be playing
For what it's worth I think POM will travel & captain the side
As New Zealand will be first up I think there won’t be any experimentation against South Africa, the coaches will want to use the tour as a chance to get the team in perfect working order to set themselves up for that match
Ireland. The only rugby nation where preparing for friendlies takes precedence over preparing for World Cups
Is there a world cup this year?
No. What's your point?
The claim that we prioritise these games and other teams use them to experiment is a lie.
The idea that we'd use a test match against SA as preparation for a test match against NZ four months later is just… well, I don't know what it is.
I'd say there a huge difference in giving Beirne the summer tour off as then he has a real off season. Giving him two games off during the season just isnt the same break.
Beirne has played a simply enormous amount of rugby and at some point we need to rest him.
You know this is an internet message board and has no bearing on what actually happens within the Ireland camp, right?
and here was me thinking facing the other 2 countries in the top 3 ranking in the world WAS good preparation for possibly facing them in the next RWC
but hey, some oracles on here seem to know better
I'm not sure why Beirne is the only name being thrown around? Why him and not Aki or Doris, etc etc?
Our provincial teams are set up to give test players regular rests and limited game time throughout the season, specifically so they're available for Ireland.
Ireland's second test is 13 July. It will be the best part of three months before any of them play another competitive game.
I mentioned Beirne as thats who was referenced in the post I responded to. All I was saying is missing a summer tour and missing two games during the season is not the same thing.
I don't think he should be left at home. I don't think he will be left at home.
Oh the irony, giving out about the a central contract player not getting rested for Ireland but not wanting them rested for their club. That’s the central tenet of the cc, national team is the priority, if they need a rest it happens for club games. Maybe Leinster don’t have it as easy as some people think!
We are 3 years away from a World Cup
Calling them "friendlies" 😂
So rest him for games in the URC when he is not required
Not when you are playing the World Champions and you have the chance to test tactics/game plans etc
We keep getting told a year or two outs the wrong time for experimenting now three years outs the wrong time
South africa sent two seperate squads to gsmes in trc never mind test games
As of now we cant experiment 3 years out because what's the point and nor a year or 2 out because we need to build to the wc seems to be the general sentiment
