We already have recycle bins for houses which did the same job. It would have cost less money and hassle for the government to require local cocos and workplaces to provide separate bins for recycling.

This scheme was set up to make money for people who run it.
If it was even remotely pro-environmental it would not reject bottles or cans without logo. It would accept them perhaps without compensation or with symbolical 1c reward. Maybe not exactly a gainer with plastic bottle but rejecting aluminium cans which do have scrap value only show that people running scheme are interested in quick buck only.
p.s. If machines suddenly start eating all cans I expect some compensation for improving this already profitable business idea.

that's a complete mis-use of the word "just".
a correct use would be "i just put my container in the nearest recycling bin after, and moved on with my life, instead of having to keep a collection of rubbish i need to carry around with me to deposit in a machine that might work"

I saw a Centra down the country where they have located the RVM in the car park which is across the road from the shop.
Main advantage is you can park right beside it and do the business.
A problem maybe on a wet day with wind blowing the rain in under the canopy.
Yeah the snowflakes without cars and/or those with a disability could do with a bit more lampooning here.

Odd comment. What do gender and age have to do with a clearly poorly implemented RVM scheme?
You know what is a simple task?
Making some basic changes to sort out this scheme instead of leaving it to continue pilfering 10s of millions from the public.
I used to live in the Czech Republic that also had a similar(but better) system. There I did a weekly trip to the RVM. It also took glass.
Since this came in here, out of 5 trips a grand total of 1 can has been accepted. I got a voucher for 15 cent which then would not scan in the shop.
So I have given up on the system and now everything just goes in my green bin.
So, you are another "I'm alright Jack". It has worked for you and so the hundreds of other people who have had problems, it is obviously a people problem. Nothing at all to do with a badly implemented, ill thought out system that only serves to line the pockets of the people who run it?

you see I've lived in Germany and still go there regularly and have used this system long before it came here. I'm also old enough to remember bring glass bottles back for deposit refund in the 70's.
Today's snowflakes just seem to eb unable to grasp that sometimes you need to put a tiny weeny little effort into making life better for the future.
I've done 4 returns trips so far. No issue whatsoever. Zero rejects and really can't see why grown men seem to have such an issue with such a simple task.
and next time I'm shopping somewhere that has a machine I get a few quid off that shop.

Definite this thread as it literally is full of snowflakes who seem to need their mammy to help them do anything very basic and then whine if things don't work absolutely perfectly
The one thing I'd comment on is the supermarkets that have implemented the machines in outdoor spaces have clearly seen the system used elsewhere and have done it right. You can see that very definitely with how Aldi has implemented them in some of their sites - all very neat and tidy.
I can't see retailers continuing to keep the machines inside the front areas of stores. I've seen them in various Tescos e.g. the one on Prussia Street in Dublin or various Centras etc. They're both smelly and often extremely noisy as they crush and sort cans.
Turning the can upside down will do the trick. If the weight of the can including liquid exceeds 100 grams, the machine will reject it. The shops should have a routine for keeping the machines clean.
"3.5 Weight Detection RVMs are only required to accept empty containers. To identify partially filled or fully filled containers, an RVM should use weight detection. This weight detection requires an accuracy of at least 95%. Containers should weigh no more than 100 grams including any excess liquid. If a container is identified as not empty, the container should be rejected."

I wonder how long will machines last because I have seen people putting cans in from which there was stuff dripping on the belt. Bottles with leftover drink still in them. Would be interesting when weather warms up as decomposing beer or cider does have certain unpleasant aroma. It is going to be irresistible for wasps and other insects. Perhaps it has something to do with rewilding…
It is a biatch to completely empty a can anyway and I am not seeing myself washing them since that would go against green "conserve da water" mantra.

Can you close this thread and start another one. The posts from this thread can then be merged into the new thread if necessary. In theory that thread should carry on without getting stuck.
I'm on about the fact I keep getting notifications of new posts but when I check there's nothing new, sometimes when I open it I'm brought to posts that are days old and they appear as the last post in the thread. It's a Boards IE site issue and has nothing to do with the topic under discussion.
At a technical level, the thread keeps getting stuck when it rolls over onto a new page and it goes into a limbo where you can't see new posts until more are posted. What it shares with Re-turn is that it is a PITA.
Out of sync with just what? Not out of sync with public opinion anyway.
That's the sort of idea you'd expect from a vested interest?

Re-Turn should be reading this thread and getting their act together. This scheme is dog sh!t for the environment, customer, shop staff and those already recycling at home using a green/blue wheelie bin.
