I know the first proposal of this type of thread was shut down due to the OP tone.
I honestly think it time to start this discussion.
No further info.
When are the debates on? Any notions on what they say are the main issues facing Galway?
Under 'occupation', one wrote mother 😀 You go girl! 😃
I reckon so. Blow ins who don't know the area. I know sometimes people put down their home addresses which isn't too bad.
It must have been Monday evening around 8 I heard the first debate as I was driving, I didn't catch when the next one was to be on, could have been this evening, can't find the programme schedule on gbfm
Great to see that Colette Connolly has thrown in the towel
Two of them are available to listen back to here:

I don't know if that's something to celebrate. When the Salthill Cycle Lane controversy was in full swing you had one Councillor from one of the main parties using a single heated phone call they had with another Council candidate as an excuse to go on the national airwaves and try to present themselves as a martyr for the 'abuse' they were getting. But at the same time Colette had multiple instances of vile abuse being screamed at her by strangers while she was out and about in Galway but she kept completely quiet about it rather than trying to capitalise on it. I admire her for that. And, if that abuse influenced her decision not to run again, then it's yet more confirmation that our political space is deteriorating significantly.
Am going to guess based on your username shw was not in your Ward anyhow?
Presume you will be backing the big lads going for election who say stuff like "I will build the big wide road"
I’ll back big women who say it too!
Anyone know what he means by this (paywalled)? Malachy Duggan is now fully qualified in traffic management.
Is Malachy running in the Central Ward?
A great opener paragraph in this article.
"
Malachy Duggan added a new qualification to his lengthy, and varied, CV earlier this month. Not out of choice, but necessity.
The self-professed “part-time playwright and part-time publican” of The Blue Note and Massimo bars in Galway city is now fully qualified in traffic management.
Most likely he has the safety cert needed for lads who manage road closures for things like roadworks, or 6-11pm outdoor drinking facilities.
Ya its about the course they did for the road closures. Council weren't going to send out people so some of the local businesses and employees got certified. He's not running. Headline a little misleading.
Interesting article. Highlights some of the issues for local businesses and their struggles with the council
Over the past five years, roads around Duggan’s venues and other popular pubs like the Róisín Dubh and Taylor’s Bar have been pedestrianised from the beginning of each May to facilitate outdoor dining. “It was meant to happen from May 1 this year, but that didn't happen because the council aren't paying the workers to close the roads as they have been. So a few of us went to a three-day roadworks course in Roscommon. Now I’m qualified to stop traffic, put up signs and put up the polls to pedestrianise the area,” Duggan said.
'and put up the polls to pedestrianise the area' 😃
Poles.
Wow, I must do that course. :)
At a tangent, according to Mayoral voting pact, who is likely to be next Mayor of Galway city?
Pact is redundant at this point? Once Local Election is done and we have candidates elected then the horse trading will begin.
Local elections on the 7th of June 2024
https://www.electoralcommission.ie/local-council-elections/
Btw, has any one party ruled out not co-operating with any other party? We hear it nationally, but locally?
Whoever it is will probably have to fist fight Eddie Hoare for the chain back. I'd say he'd turn up to the opening of a pack of Tayto at the moment if he thought he'd get his photo taken.
Final stretch for this. Still have to figure out who I'm voting for. I'll probably give Eibhlin from the Soc Dems my 1 since I actually had a good conversation with her and think she'll give it a good go if in, but no idea after that.
You should make your vote go far as possible, vote all the way down the ballot paper
Decided to do some research on all the candidates for Oranmore/Athenry.
A tiny caveat, I immediately wrote off 3 candidates that I disagree with, so I was left with 10 candidates to read up on.
Apart from a small number, it' very difficult to find any information regarding what they are running on.
I assumed they'd all have websites, listing what their priorities are. It's shocking, that there are only 3 candidates that seem to be transparent in terms of what they are trying to do
I understand zell12's point about voting all the way down the ballot paper, but I'm struggling to prioritise to be honest.
I reckon I'll vote for anyone who actually bothers their ar$e actually knocking on my door.
We've had zillions of leaflets but no faces so far.
I find it easiest to list them according to those I have fewest (or most) reservations about and vote down the list. After eliminating 4 of them totally, I have 12 left in order of preference. I wouldn't wish to see a few of these 12 elected either but if push comes to shove I would prefer them to squeeze in ahead of the 4 I am leaving out completely.
Its a good question, have not heard anything from the main party's on it. The PD's, FG and FF have in the past number of Councils been aligned with each other
NEW WIKI Page - worth keeping an eye on from Saturday (not me )
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Galway_City_Council_election
Not really the same at locals since they won't be forming a coalition. There will be unofficial pacts though. They'll start to form on Saturday when the talliers start to get an idea of who will be elected
The pacts and alliances will likely dictate who's in the rotation for major.
"I am more disturbed at the fact that a labour party official has access to the front page of a free newspaper (with a circulation of 30k) especially at the time of an election."
