It’s about 10 years since I bought off Amazon- do you get taxed importing them?
Yes but often not very much, all import fees and VAT differences are calculated at the checkout so you'll know exactly what you are paying before entering your card details. They estimate import costs and even refund you later if overcharged, if under charged they take the hit. A lot of stock can be shipped from EU locations anyway including Ireland. You can also use any other Amazon sites like Amazon.de or .fr and just be charged normal EU rates. Amazon.ie is coming next year too apparently.
amazon UK show prices with UK VAT 20%, I think, at checkout add the 3% for Irish, they also take a small commission for sterling to euro. (Then you might see on arrival, AnPost label showing it was shipped from Amazon depot Ireland)
On the commission I always pay in Sterling, AIB charge less for the exchange than Amazon do.
Interesting, what do you have to do, set up a sterling account?
Nothing, at checkout there are 2 radio buttons Eur is selected by default but you can change it to GBP before submitting.
Thanks, good to know.
I pay in Sterling using Revolut and avoid the charges the Irish banks when you pay sterling . I exchange euro for sterling on Revolut where I get the daily interbank rate so can convert when the rate is good. Also, if you get the Revolut credit card you can use it in the UK
Havent done, you could order from amazon.de, the german version, i sometimes get bits there too
Found a tranpoline mesh base on a job I was doing, had to take it to the dump with a trailer load more. Threw the mesh over the top to tidy the load, with a ratchet strap too.
The mesh came home. Super job. Eyelets in it too where the springs were!
Bent the pump lever on the knapsack sprayer over the weekend.
Cut out the problematic bit, stuck a bit of buffed up rebar inside the lever and spot welded it in place. Used a nut to connect the lever to the pump. Back in business again.
And yes I just noticed that the nut should be on the underside, but should be welded well enough in place that it won't break off and it still allows for full pump travel.
AFAIKwhen you pay by card you pay nothing extra to convert form dollar/sterling etc to euro. You only pay the set exchange rate and that is set by Visa, Mastercard not by your bank
I wish o had a wider base but once filled with concrete hopefully it will make a moveable gate post. Not a big heavy gate.
The last time I used a credit card in the UK the exchange rate is dreadful and there was, from what I remember, a transaction charge!.
Did you withdraw cash or was ot for a product or service
Both. Withdrew cash and paid for shopping.
I now have the Revolut card which is already topped up with sterling whenever the rate goes over 85p. Much cheaper to use… also a lot cheaper for Amazon where I pay in sterling
Advice please. I took out the foam air filter on my hedge trimmer (Mc Culloch) and washed it in a degreaser solution. I've left it out to dry. It says in the manual that I need to re oil it when it drys but doesn't say what type of oil. Any suggestions?
Same type of oil used in the engine I presume, SAE 30? It's only function is to trap dirt and dust, so as long as it's compatible with the foam it shouldn't be too critical.
I'm digging out for a new slurry storage tank here at the moment and there's a few water springs after appearing along the bottom of the hole.
The digger man has cut a channel out to one side of the hole to allow the water run away. He says that'll keep the water from pushing up the against the concrete of the tank.
I don't doubt him but is there anything others on here have done to reassure themselves such springs won't cause a problem down the road?
We have ran a pipe about 30m to the nearest Dyke. Fall in the yard so not too difficult to do. Gives great peace of mind for the future.
Thanks.
Put it down before the floor is poured is it? And run it from the spring to the drain?
Sorry, I should have been clearer. When we had the hole dug for the tank, we dug a drain to the nearest Duke 30m away. Put pipe in the drain and backfilled with stone. When the tank was complete, we ran a pipe all the way around and connected it to the outlet going to the drain before backfilling.
Thanks again. I have ya now.

any opinion on that charger? For a tractor battery…. The odd car and lawnmower.
Thanks in advance.
Yeah! Bloody expensive! Why pay that much
thanks- I got it off Amazon. I’ve not bought off Amazon in years.
Hope no one comes back with a bad review of it :-)
I've the older version it's 15 years old ...…it's bomb proof........
Edit to say I paid a lot more for it back then
sound thanks very much.
Any recommendations for a strimmer?
I was using my brother’s Mitox one for the last few years but it’s been repaired once too often according to a local handyman who recommended retiring it today.
I’d be using it only to clear grass/nettles from under the electric fence. Ideally it’d also do around the garden for the OH as her little battery one also gave up the ghost this week.
There’s dozens of options online and the more I looked the more confused I got. So I thought I’d ask ye good people on here.
I’d be open to battery or petrol and wouldn’t be using it for more than an hour-ish at a time.
