Feels like the right time to start a new thread for next year's gigs.
John Mayer playing the 3Arena on 29 March 2024.
Róísín Dubh is usually €2/€3 a ticket cheaper for members than TM. All that’s required for membership is you signing up with your email.
The chlorine smell gone and it’s decent enough. It’s been refurbished but it’s still basically a glorified school gym with a stage at the end. Having said that I’ve seen a lot of good gigs there in the past few 4/5 years - Lankum, Fontaines, Clannad, John Grant, Paul Weller, Paul Heaton, etc. The atmosphere will be great two weeks before Xmas but it’ll unfortunately also mean a lot of yapping so be prepared for that.
Easily sell those I’d say. Population of Sligo Town at 21k is greater than a quarter that of Galway where Villagers play a 1.200 venue. Don’t underestimate their popularity in the nation. Five successive top two studio albums here and another biggie on the way.
.
Amazed you’ve never seen them as they’re here pretty regularly and a top notch act. Superb at the second EP subbing to the Bad Seeds and they were also the support for the Abbatoir Blues tour. For me they peaked with Deserters but there’s great stuff on the albums since then and they remain a terrific live act. Noisy as fu@k too.
he didn’t sell out cork opera last time and that’s a city that’s 6 times bigger. A lot of artists would find it hard to sell 340 tickets in Sligo
In terms of Cork that’s a venue three times the size of the Hawkswell and in a city where Conor plays regularly. Sligo gets few touring acts. Less nationally popular artists like Susan O’Neill and The Unthanks sold out the Hawkswell last year. I’d even venture that he’d be better off at the 1,200 capacity Knocknarea Arena where Paul Brady, John Grant and the Waterboys sold out in 2023. Villagers have similar pulling power to those and it’s an area that’s starved of live music so little competition. People also travel from North Mayo, Leitrim, Roscommon and South Donegal to gigs there, no more than 50 mins travel.
it’s a shame nothing ever got held at lissadell after the Summer westlife and Leonard cohen played- there was talk of it but never happened
Yeah fair point, just thought now with venues and artists having their own social media, mailing lists etc there would be less need. If people went to venue site to buy and there was only the 1 link wouldn't make a difference to them but guess as you say TM does lot of marketing to make people aware of the gigs in 1st place.
certain acts want to sold on ticketmaster for visibility reasons as discussed. certain shows in venues like David gray in whelans need to be done through ticketmaster as whelans website couldn’t handle the traffic.
Too many legal issues with the Dublin barristers who bought the house seeking to deny right of way to ramblers. Dragged on for years and got in the way of any gigs. A huge pity because I heard the Cohen gig was pretty amazing.
Mercury Rev- Limerick, Galway, Cork & Dublin
Galway International Arts Festival programme released today. We already knew the line up for the Big Top but now we get the listings for Roisin Dubh and Monroe's. Nothing earth shattering for me but it does solve the mystery of why there was a Galway sized hole in Susan O'Neill's recently announced 10+ date autumn Irish tour.

Morgan Wallen prices in the 3Arena are 110-156 euro.
This is going to be the new norm now.
And yet Fontaines DC are playing there this autumn and charging waaay more reasonable prices. They could charge a lot more, easily the level you call the new norm, but haven't.
for a handful of international superstars underplaying Dublin in non summer months. he will sell it out and probably add another. sure people play that money for a six nations ticket.
looking at the Dublin gig a few things would concern me…. It’s theif fifth night on the trot without a night off… would JD’s voice / singing style stand up to the rigours of all that ? I’d have my doubts…. Saw them a few times and on one occasion he was struggling and couldn’t get near the high notes after a couple of songs…. Had to adopt a sort of lower octave compromise in the style he sang, was weird, wasn’t a great gig.
Sad in a way too how they have gone from selling out Vicar St, and a real buzz and clamour for tickets to the Button factory….from 1500 —> 550 capacity.
In the last about 10 years, only 1 album of original songs…. Don’t think that helps retain interest… had a think but I’ll be giving it a miss. Prefer to remember them in their prime.
Am I the only person who has never heard of this guy or any of his songs?
It's country music.. I could say the same for 99% of country music acts nowadays, yet they have a draw.
sure country to country does the business every year and I’d say most on here would struggle to know an act.
Everyone has a blackspot somewhere in their music knowledge
and similarly Irish acts like BLK can sell out 3 arena and 95% of people wouldn’t have a clue who you are talking about
If someone said to me that there is a musician playing in 3Arena and tickets are roughly on average €130 each - but that I would never have heard of them, I wouldn't take it on board. But, nope, never heard of this dude.
Highly recommend this, brilliant in the Sugar Club earlier this year
At the risk of boring you @Stillill42 you’re in for a treat with MR, one of the very best bands live acts out there. Half the set will be from Deserter’s.
Can I also recommend their Bobbie Gentry covers album where they did the whole of The Delta Sweete album with various female singers - Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Beth Orton, Hope Sandoval, etc. It works.
Some goodies at the Arts Fest but the clashes are really bad. Big Top pretty poor as we already knew but good stuff in Monroes, the Róísín and Saint Nicholas’ Church.
Leftfield v the Undertones Stewart Copeland v Fun Lovin’ Criminals Gruff Rhys v Simple Kid
New album is imminent, that’ll be three in nine years which is pretty productive for a band of their vintage. I realise that the Bobbie Gentry one is a covers album but it’s a cracker.
They’re also underestimating their own appeal I believe. A band who opt for smaller venues than they can sell out. Pretty certain that all tickets will go this week and they could thus have played the likes of the Olympia, Black Box, Cork Opera House, etc. They also go on tour as support often which most contemporaries would be too proud to. They’ve toured with the Bad Seeds and are off to Australia with Ride in August. Subbed recently to Future Islands in Dublin and will do so below Mogwai & Lankum next month in Kilmainham.
You may be correct about the voice after 4/5 dates but they don’t play long sets (circa 12-15 tracks) and some stuff is instrumental. As a live act they’re still pretty special and I expect very good things from this tour. Noiseniks too so Donahue could possibly get drowned out at times if any voice issues.
Never heard of him tbh
Was there. Can confirm! One of the best I've ever been to. Perhaps mainly cos of the artist, but the setting was wonderful. And it was a sunny evening.
🙋♂️…is response to yer country music man, that is! Never heard of him either.
The country guy we've never heard of has added a second night 😋
