Maybe but you'd have 14,000 little children less to enjoy the music.

Mod - warned. This was not the thread for political posts about current military and geopolitical conflicts.

If they have a legitimate grievance fair enough but I'm also thinking of the celtic words, stuff she said in interviews. My point is there may be some guilt involved in that they feel bad for not boycotting but my thing is you made a choice stated why and some people will be ok with that and some not but move on.

Not at all up to date on this beyond the rather predictable politicisation and grandstanding by various acts on the whole Israel/Gaza conflict, but this behind-the-scenes "issue" with the Dutch entrant came up as an Indo alert earlier, followed shortly thereafter by another alert regarding our own entrant.

I've no interest in/little time for gender identity politics and couldn't say I'm a huge EV fan generally but my take from these snippets of "breaking news worthy of alerts via apps" (🙄) - and I admit that I could be adding 2+2 and getting 5 - is that the former said/did something the latter took offence to and because of the world we live in nowadays this must be visibly actioned regardless.

A more cynical me might even think that this whole thing is to gather more votes later on given the aforementioned influence of politics on the whole thing. It's supposed to be a cheesy night of europop and somewhat satirical commentary - leave the bloody politics (all kinds!) at the door for one night FFS!

They did move on but as I said the behaviour of the israeli delegation changed everything along with the EBUs decision to ignore that behaviour.

The silence of 14000 dead children is quite deafening whenever the israeli act takes to the stage

Round about now I’d have the BBC R2 on and be in the process of excitedly getting ready for Eurovision but I’m not feeling it this year. Mainly because of the controversy attached to what should be a fun mad night of entertainment and cliffhanger voting.

I don’t agree at all with Israel being included on political grounds this time around, but they are.

I can’t help thinking that some sports people try to psyche opposition out either to get them to make a mistake on the field or fúck with their pre game preparation. If this is what Israel are doing, let them off. If they’re instead trying to get at opponents on political grounds, Shame on them. They won’t be kicked out though. Israel have happily cultivated a situation over years that any criticism of them at all is labeled as anti semitic. It just makes them look sad as a nation. So let them off with it.

At this point the time for protests to the organisers is over. The best protest right now is to go out on the stage tonight and tear it up. Put the best foot forward and make sure Israel are a Eurovision footnote tomorrow morning.

No they didn't. They tried to have celtic messages on them during their semi-final performance. Does this complaint pre-date the semi-final?

As with most finals I don't think the performances tonight will have much effect on the voting. Will be interesting to see whether there is a huge disparity between the jury and public voting. The public voting has nearly made it impossible for ireland to win.

The last country remaining will be the winner.

Yes they did move on, the israeli delagations behaviour was happening before and after they were refused to allow the ogham characters which was petty as fvck imo. The EBU are bought and paid for by the main sponsor who are an israeli company.

I feel in a similar way, even if all the songs were shyte the contest was usually a good bit of silliness for viewing, but the fact that Israel are allowed to participate in the current situation brings back memories of moral failures over Scebrenica, and how "never again" happened again.

i dont think the gay vote counts as extra but be great wouldn't it

Countries voting for their neighbours and mates wasn't any better with jury votes.

My recollection is it was worse, actually.

who are the children doing all the booing then ?

Interesting you say that yet the fact remains that the best song has won the last 3 years, Sweden doing it twice!! Sweden is a traditional European country like Ireland but has proven that the correct song, backed by a good display will win. Bambis song is not for everyone, but fair play for qualifying

I can't recall anything as bad as Ukraine smashing the public vote and defeating the uk which were well ahead until 10 minutes to the end of the show.

French participant gives speech during performance at rehearsal

French participant Slimane gave a speech during his performance at the final rehearsal. He interrupted his song Mon Amour with a plea for peace and brotherhood. By stopping his song and making a statement, he did not comply with the rules for the Eurovision Song Contest, which prohibit political statements.

Can't agree about last year sorry!Finland were robbed! 😢

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,616 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Then he should also be disqualified as the EBU said zero tolerance but we all know nothing will happen to a big 5, i bet if any non big 5 country did exactly the same they would be immediately disqualified.

Can you give me an example of pre-semi final behavior? All I've seen is complaints about the Israeli broadcaster during the semi-final and stuff after. Are you saying the attempt to sneak in a protest with the ogham characters was in response to something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,273 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

It does feel strange - listening to BBC R2 right now (Michelle Visage chatting to Eurovision performers from years gone by and playing their records), acting like everything is hunky-dory.

Granted, I’m not expecting ‘Liveline’ - just that weird disconnect from the BBC of ‘Let’s Get This Party Started’ whilst the majority of fans just want it to be over!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,616 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

There are multiple reports that they have been badgering journalists and other contestants since they arrived in malmo, their security detail refusing to allow people move freely about areas, taking pictures and videos of other contestants when specifically requested not too etc etc. They have all been linked countless times previously in this thread and im not going digging for them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,319 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

The EBU by trying to make this years competition apolitical have made it more political. And they really have shut down the rumours around the Dutch expulsion earlier.

I'm kinda hoping it is in Israel next year as that may kill off the ESC in its current form.

Maybe the Palestinians could release the hostages in time to watch the Eurovision tonight.
