Following on from here
New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
Based on u20s performances tho, he hasn't done alot this season along with injury as well.
I would say for the next 2-4 years there are others we'll ahead of him re international selection.
Huge ceiling tho ( Jesus I hate that phrase😁)
but the example isnt a great one. by your metric shane daly should be in the irish squad seeing as he was one of the (if not, the) only ones to show some attacking ability in that game. it was a one-off performance
"Coombes has been taken into plenty of squad, when he got a chance v NZ A he failed" - i would imagine most people's problem is that he has been given very little chance in terms of actual gametime - he played pretty well in july 2021 and was one of the best players against the maori in 2022. again, if we are going on 'failing' as you put it, against the NZ XV then Ireland will be fairly short of players to pick to be honest seeing as almost all of them 'failed'
i also dont necessarily think its some sort of leinster conspiracy btw, i just think your argument isnt great thats all
At this stage of the discussion in the thread I couldn't care less
It's the same debate over & over again he said you said but but...
I'll leave ye to it
Looking forward to good game sat
The officials for Saturday
As I've posted here on here before, Coombes was out before the start of the season and only came back something like a month before that game. I'm not going looking up the dates again as Ive posted it several times.
Yeah he didn't play well but it was very much the exception and not the rule to his performances generally.
For whatever reason he hasn't gotten a look-in since but if I cast my mind back to James Lowe and his shocking defensive performances and reads in his early caps... he kept getting picked. Maybe he just had more credit in the bank and Coombes didn't take his chance.
There's not much more he can do really, he's been arguably one of the top performers in the URC over a few seasons now. He must just not suit the Ireland game plan in the coaches eyes.
What are you talking about? Lowe was dropped for Ireland due to his early performances.
This is the norm so not surprised - everything that challenges the narrative of grievance and victimhood is completely ignored.
Coombes is a cracking player, Ireland coaches prefer baird, doris and pom at 6, doris and conan at 8 and vdf and Doris at 7.
Doesn't take anything from Coombes , he's top end.
I'll be honest I normally don't engage with you as I don't think you argue in good faith on here and are a major reason why the site is gone to pot debate-wise… but I'll bite here - Lowe was dropped after a string of poor performances as opposed to not showing up in one match. Bit of a difference in ruthlessness you'll find.
I'd have thought Coombes has done enough to warrant another look but we haven't exactly had a lot of injuries in the backrow and I've said already that maybe they think he just doesn't fit the style of play. I disagree, but c'est la vie.
I didnt mention vendetta against anyone i said mistakes where made
Lads like frawley and joe mccarthy also had nightmares in that game
You can drop the hyperbole with the hammered and vitriol stuff iv not said that so dont put words in my mouth
The cohesion arguments perfectly valid
This is not the first mistake farrell has made hes human it happens
He was fsr from the only one who failed in that game but seems to be the only one its brought up for
Yes coombes is significantly better than penny or deegan. Hes been a europan player of the year nominee and theyve barely played european games. Their dirt trackers as they would say on lions tours
Do we know if there's any chance Kleyn will feature again this season?
No he wont start of next season hopefully
Unfortunately not, prognosis is better than rumoured by Birch but he's out for the season
Frawley scored a try and went off injured at HT. Joe McCarthy left with a head injury after 8 mins or so.
I don't think anyone played particularly well in that Maori game as much as I can recall. From the outside it did seem slightly unfair to single out Coombes as the only person to be dropped from the squad, but we have no idea what was going on inside. These decisions are rarely made on the performance in one game.
Did he win European player of year?
Don’t think either more minutes in Europe automatically mean a player is better
Referring to players as “dirt trackers” 🤦♂️
It's a common rugby term.
These decisions are rarely made on the performance in one game.
Of course not, and Coombes was recalled into the squad for the Six Nations 2023, and kept for the pre-RWC training squad a couple of months later. There seems to be a notion that he was cast out into the wilderness afterwards which absolutely isn't the case.
I know it is, but trying to say Penny/Deegan are compared to Coombes 🙄
Well that confirms you didn't watch the game. McCarthy was off before 10 minutes of the game
Frawley was off early as well
Frawley played a half. Eberyone played poor and was panned including casey and nash. Nobodys held to account but coombes. That team had 1 training session together before the game its an absolutely laughable way to dismiss him when he played class vs the likes of tolouse, sa a and crusaders.
I'm not sure why you take such umbrage at it. They are peripheral squad players - one of whom looks likely to be leaving, Coombes is a central starting player (for now at least, I'm curious if his bench cameos in South Africa are actually cameos). If either are better than Coombes they never get a chance to show it as they almost never play top level games.
None of them are better than Conan/Doris which is their real problem of course.
Anyway, this isn't the Ireland thread.
With the eye injury taking time to heal, he opted to get a procedure on his knee done which I believe ruled him out til pre-season. The eye injury is also healing slower than originally hoped, but according to Rowntree they are satisfied that it will heal, hopefully by the start of next season. There's no definite timescale yet as to when he'll be back, but fingers crossed the knee is perfect and the eye will heal and by pre-season he'll be like a fresh signing.
At least you found google this time to check how long players stayed on the pitch
Nobody is dismissing anyone after the game, as seen Coombes was called into squads afterwards.
Players dont have to play 80 mins to be poor go watch the game
I posted something as mild as the following, being careful to couch it in caveats etc:
is it possible to acknowledge Leinster players may have an easier path to the Ireland squad because of cohesion / familiarity with others etc without it being Leinster bias / a vendetta?
What it's been met with?
Fun…
We've been on a great run of form since January, hopefully now can continue that into the end of the season and into the knock-outs.
We seemed to do a particularly good job of peaking, both physically and form-wise last season, so I'm hopefully. Hard to say which of the 3 fixtures is the more difficult, but it feels like we need to be getting 4 points here if we've a chance of breaking into the top 2.
How dare you suggest that starters at other provinces may be better than 3rd choice leinster players
