I don't see how a smoking ban in a pub is in any way remotely similar to the DRS.
Baffles me that some people are comparing the implementation of both.
As an anti litter scheme, it's fine in theory. Implemented poorly with vested interests having too much influence.
As a recycling scheme, it's a complete pain in the arse. We have a system of recycle bins for many years now that we pay for and which the majority of householders use. Pissing off compliant citizens is not the way to go. That this is not integrated into the scheme is scandalous and Minister Smyth should be fired for gross incompetence.
I'll snap a few photo's next week of the reverse vending machine set-up's in Lithuania. I've been using the system there for years, hence my enthusiasm for it when I heard it was finally coming to Ireland…. (how wrong I was).
The ones I've used over there, the RVM is located in a separate room attached to the shop, but with a door to the outside only, so you don't have to go into the shop at all (and accessible 24 hours per day). Also their RVM's take in glass bottles in addition to plastic bottles & cans.
I've never once had a bottle/can rejected from the machines there, and I've never one arrived at a machine that was out of order.
The idea is to see if adding deposits to containers will get our previously good recycling rate even higher. As per the target as part of our EU membership. The machines are going in Germany since 2003, and they are up in the very high 90's percent range. Give ours a chance, and do not condemn them within a couple of months. I saw on videos from Germany and Denmark that low income people are making money from containers abandoned in the streets by the well off.
Bottom first - I think we've just stumbled across the perfect slogan for this scheme
Ossian Smyth missed a trick there.
He could be promoting this scam as a nice day out for bored couples.
I'll say it again we aren't the Germans so you can't compare us to them.
How to avoid scams.

This keeps been rolled out by the cheer leaders as a positive.
I personally think it is beyond crass.
Supercrass.
Happy because they dont have to pay for recycle wheelie bins on top of deposits.
The "same as everywhere else" propaganda has been debunked on here several times. We have implemented a double payment scheme with more hurdles than anywhere else including no bulk return centres / machines.
It could be a good scheme. As it stands it's far from it. I saw an article where Re-Turn say they are currently assessing complaints from retailers. Its a start I suppose. Hopefully to be followed up on.
The only RVM in walking distance, outside the local Supervalu. Was shuttered at 1130, still shuttered at 1.
Nice to have a RVM within walking distance! For me. 15 miles or so away.
In It for the Money.
Another way to gouge some money from us. Personally I always used our green bin, can't see the point in polluting the air even more with a needless trip to the shops to return the cans.
Lovely heart warming story from Australia. A couple needing money to fund their wedding are doing it by collecting bottles and cans. And are also helping charities. I see many similar stories, which have the general theme of removing litter from the environment. And people doing this are not looked down on.
I can see it being a feature in Ireland soon. I would certainly pick up a clean bottle or can from the street or the countryside, if it was convenient for me at the time. The hedges near my house regularly get bin bags full of empty beer cans thrown in them. This might stop now, but if it doesn't I will make a bit of money.
I suspect the reason suck machines are not operating here is because it was felt that people would dump shite in them and block/ break them.
Good for you. And sure who knows some day you may be able to pay for your dream wedding or a deposit for a home like the lovely Ellie and Darren.
Thank you, and thanks for watching to the end.
I just bring the receipt to the cashier and my gift card they put it on.
I never said it is extra money. It's consolidating my receipts onto on card like a saving towards my Christmas shopping. Saving is money being kept.
What does one do to reclaim deposit for bottles bought in airport?
I've 3 water bottles now with me in Manchester. Do I have to bring the empties back to Ireland - is that even allowed?
Well there's no RVM in Manchester.
Your call 🙂
Empties are allowed but really they should be getting posted back to Re-turn Ireland reverse charges.
What shop is this?
Interesting take on that-Thank you
I e mailed the off licence where we get one of our favourite bees as their stock was very low & asked when they would be getting more in, they replied as it came from Canada the cans didn't have the correct logo on so they wouldn't be stocking it again. Brilliant.
We were stood in the queue at our local Dunnes to use the machine, the lady using it would have one accepted & one to chuck in the bin alongside, the mutterings & tuttings were getting louder with each can rejected.
Lol…

Not likely, the chances of those cans being undamaged and accepted by a machine are slim to none. At best, most of them will just end up in the green bin like they should have before this terribly implemented scheme/rip-off was dreamt up.
