Nice wheels alright
Was Lapiz blue available on GTI of mk8? It should have been kept for the Golf R only, not R Lines, not Tiguans, not GTIs
cheers buddy I got it hooked up and it’s great! my last car didn’t have CarPlay so it was all new to me. Spent 3 minutes setting it up and loving it now when I need the maps
Google maps is on the IPhone and works great with apple CarPlay, I use it all the time no problem
New Golf GTI 8.5 detials and pricing just anounced. (some spec changes - heated seats and reversing camera now standard) Like the new Queenstown wheels"
Ah I wish I could, only space for two cars outside the house (parking spaces, thanks SDCC).
Not many Leons on the market anyway. Either too new or the pre-facelift with the manual handbrake. Don't think anyone but Cupra would touch the EV either. Probably for the best! I'm sure I'll revisit the idea again next year.
buy an old MX5 for a weekend car and keep the EV
I would say keep the EV and get a cheap and fun petrol car for the weekend. Maybe something that would qualify for classic insurance?
5 years after originally window shopping for Cupra Leons, I still want one. As much as I love my Born and the way EVs drive I still enjoy getting into the old 1 litre Golf. I know it's a bog standard econobox but there's just more emotion. The feel of an engine, the sound of the revs going through the gears, the faint whiff of petrol on a cold start in Winter...
EV values are in the toilet at the moment but I'd very strongly consider jumping into a Leon Cupra tomorrow if the numbers were good. I don't regret the Born in the slightest and it was the right purchase at the time when a new GTI was €65k and I didn't want an overpriced 3 year old car with crap PCP rates.
What do we reckon, the heart wants what the heart wants or would it genuinely be stupid? Only thing is, going from essential zero running costs as servicing is every 2 years, €120 tax and zero charging costs due to solar panels, to thirsty fuel consumption, major servicing, NCT, DSG/diff servicing...
In my experience of an MK8 Golf, check all electrics work, infotainment, sensors, anything electrical!. and double check!! I do not want to own this car out of warranty (had to fight for service even within warranty) . Mechanically I had nothing wrong in 2 years of ownership though. Ive had so many issues and all electrical, maybe I just bought a dud? Lost track how many times it went back to dealer with issues. Ive literally given up though and just placed an order earlier for a 3 series diesel for August, last of the diesels being produced apparently. Just hybrid and petrol moving forward.
Going to view a mk8 2023 2.0 TDI Golf tomorrow in main dealer. Anything in particular I should be looking out for?
Both Apple's and Android's versions are an absolute game changer in car infotainment. Always wondered how multi billion car companies can butcher user interfaces so much on their own takes.
You can get a dongle to have it connect wirelessly that's plugged into your USB. Note that the phones battery will drain substantially but for sub hour drives it's great.
Something like this: https://amzn.eu/d/9ZtHGe5
haha I’ll have to slum it with the cable for the meantime. Cheers again though, I didn’t realise how useful the CarPlay is and I’ve had the car nearly a year now. Will definitely use it in future whenever I need to use Google maps.
That's good to hear. Newer cars you can do it wirelessly just to add salt to the wounds.
So to update I had my phone on Apple CarPlay today and it’s great! Turns out that I just had to have it connected via cable
I'm pretty sure Google Maps are on iPhones. I know in the early days of smartphones it was an Android only app but afaik it is now on iPhones.
edit: I Googled it and you can use Google Maps. Look up a guide to help you OP.
cheers for that folks I’ll give it a go!
I don't have an iPhone but I don't think you will get google maps on an iPhone as google maps is an android app so you might have to install something from Apple that is similar or the Waze app on your iPhone.
When you go into Carplay then the car's infotainment screen should display a mirror of your phone's screen. Just use your phone's apps then via the infotainment touch screen.
I don't know I have an Android maybe it's different on iPhone.
How do you manage that? I can get the Apple car play thing if I connect with a charging cable but never tried maps with it hooked up like that
You do not look at your phone. The phone screen is mirrored onto the screen in the car with google maps on the car screen.
ah I know it’s crazy complicated trying to get into the city from the M8, ended up taking the tunnel by mistake last time. I’d prefer if the in car maps had the route as I can see that easier while driving, as opposed to trying to check the phone screen
I'd you might have better luck using the force to navigate the new Dunkettle interchange.
Google maps or Waze app via Carplay/Android Auto from your phone might be your best bet if they have updated their maps already.
Hi all, does anyone know when the latest update for the on board maps was? Taking Cork as an example there’s been some big changes around the tunnel so it would be handy if the maps reflected this, since I’ve traveled there a bit and taken the wrong road more than once 😄
From what I’ve seen you can download the updated map pack from the vw website (mines a mk. 7.5), but I’m wondering if it’s worth the effort if the maps haven’t been updated in a while.
So in the end when I went a bit Karen, VW covered the cost of new sensor :) Noooow time to start looking at replacements haha
Depends a lot on your driving style. What type of roads you drive on etc.
Spending close to €40,000 to save €20 a week rarely makes sense
What kind of MPG would you get out of a modern TDI then, 50 or 60? Currently getting 40 mpg out of my 2008 Volvo so trying to see if it justifies the outlay.

I think you'd have to do a lot of stop start driving in heavy traffic for it to make a difference. But then you'd be mostly doing driving that will use for fuel anyway. It's probably nicer to drive in that kinda traffic. With some benefit to local air quality.
I read somewhere a mild hybrid keeps the engine off in that inefficient zone, starting stopping, which means the engine spends more time in efficient zone. Well unless you hammer it everywhere.
Apparently you can save up to 0.5L/100km but I wouldn't expect any noticeable improvement. MHEV is just more emissions bollocks and it has added around a grand to the cost of a DSG model.
Was talking to manager, said that many cars are coming back with sensors failing though, so it seems a common issue and agreed with me re MK8 quality has gone downhill and actually downgraded back to a 7.5 herself so that says it all really! Bearing in mind this car has been back to same garage multiple times with issues, power steering failure the biggest with car off the road for 6 weeks for diagnostics and repairs. The least they can do in my eyes is fix the sensor, whether its them or VW pay I dont care
Seems standard enough practice. If the sensor is stone chipped then it may well have been the stone that caused it.
Just go somewhere else if they won’t fix it under warranty/goodwill
