what heading is it under? There is nothing about sheep in the headings that come up for me in the drop down menu.
It's in Applications For Payment
thats where i found it as well took a while to figure out where to look
my question is , I have a reference number payable for 160 ewes , but I sold 30 ewes in February, so I have now 130 , but i have 26 dry ewe yearling hoggetts kept for replacements, can I put those 26 now into my part of the reference number of 160 ?? Il be short a few even at that but only by 4 ,
You can do that, the ewes only have to be a year old
thanks for reply , happy days !!
Glad to see ICSA calling for measure date to be changed to mid November. When you see things like this coming from the Dept.It would .make you wonder if the people designing these schemes have any experience with sheep
Do many of ye continue to feed concentrate to Ewe's once they are turned out to grass with their lambs or just leave them with grass alone ?
usually feed them nuts for a couple of weeks but might be longer this year due to weather at moment getting high energy ewe nuts .will be giving them sheep and lamb pellets shortly and if weather improves will stop feeding them
Apparently a ewe needs three inches of grass to be able to rear two lambs so if there's more than 3 inches they're alright without nuts but if there's less than 3 inches they need supplementing.
Hope that helps
I've bout 250kgs left of a 19% ration. Wouldn't normally feed ewes with lambs at foot ration but I'm giving the twins about 200g per head per day.
Have to say the Sheep are in great form.
I've no creep feeder so thinking of purchasing one and creeping the twins once the ewe nut runs out. Or would I be better going ahead with small bit of ewe ration. Or just leave them on grass??
some guidelines for you.
According to this, 2 inches is enough grass for a ewe rearing two lambs.
my own opinion is not to stop feeding nuts with this horrible weather. It’s wet cold and windy, worst combination. We even got a touch a hail stones earlier today. Goes to show how important shelter is too. sheep and lambs seem to be thriving away here but getting an 18%. Grass is in short supply though. Going with first bit of fertiliser in a few days 🤞
Spring time on the farm is on at 8pm every night this week on channel 5
When is the closing date for the Sheep scheme
21st of May according to a text I got this morning.
Im nearly afraid to answer this!
What age can you get a flock number at. The nephew, 17, is thinking of getting 1
I don’t know the answer. Just thinking, if they get a flock/herd number, does that then start the clock ticking on any incentives or other ‘young farmer’ type schemes they might qualify for?
Query - noticed a Ewe with twin lambs this evening with a full looking bag so caught her and discovered she has Orf on both her tits. Was sure she had mastitis too at first as the udder was so hard but I milked her out and the udder seems fine was just full.
I put some antibacterial spray that I had on the tits but my question is what else can I do to cure the Ewes tits and get lambs back sucking again - is there an injection that works on Orf ?
Things are rough in oz for sheep farmers at the moment.
Anyone ?
Have Promox and Engemycin here - would either be any good for orf ?
I use teramycin spray
Promox would be good for preventing the secondary infections of orf, but there's no cure for orf.
Promox is long acting so will keep down infection for a few days. Time will cure the orf if the antibiotic stops the secondary infections and keeps it clean
Thanks for the replies.
I used Dermicidal Plus spray I had here the last two evenings on her tits so hopefully that will help and I milked her again this evening. Will put the terramycin on her tomorrow and give her 8ml promox.
Other problem now is the lambs are starting to look hungry as obviously she is sore and not letting them suck much.
Nothing is straight forward with sheep is it just when you think they are going well and out to grass 🤷♂️
We found that orf was worse every year that went by, until we used scabivax or scabiguard as it is now
hearing reports that scabiguard isn't as effective, anyone having issues on here with it?
Hope not, we're just after using it
Ewe hoggets off to a flying start, see them selling for 300 euro a head on donedeal. Will this be the norm this year or is it a dreamer selling 🤔
Seen before where lads think they will always get more selling hog for breeding later in the year, only to be disappointed…
I bet you’ll still be able to pick up handy hoggets for 150-175ish come August/September, wouldn’t pay much heed to what lads are asking for on Donedeal.
