Following on from main thread in Current Affairs about Tubs in general (now closed and mod suggestion that Entertainment category is more suitable).
Indeed, entertainment in certain respects is what Tubs has provided, albeit perhaps in a way not intended. And still awaiting 150k payback to the licence fee holder.
And of course, his new career in Virgin Radio which is imminent.

Considering that Tubridy has often cited Kazuo Ishiguro as one of his favourite authors, it was incredible to see his lack of knowledge on Walliams' selection of Ishiguro's book. He didn't seem to know anything about the novel.

Shortly afterwards, Ryan Tubridy corrected the error and told listeners it was a fake story. "Kazuo Ishiguro, who wrote one of my all-time favourite books … has been reported to be dead," Tubridy said on his show.
The NKM people will be working overtime to salvage this one. Having the comments turned off on Youtube helps. Tubridy doesn't seem quite as well read as his publicity might claim. At least with a show like the LLS, it was possible to quickly shift to a new topic but with a one to one format podcast, there's nowhere else to go.

It kills the whole interactivity of Youtube. Then again, a lot of people might not be fans of Tubridy and might mention that 150K.At least there's a link to Walliams' new book on the Easons website.

The podcast has only just been released so that 321 views (the video section) might increase over the next week or so. There might be a novelty blip based on the reviews and promotions.
View register after something like 30 seconds, so Tubs can thank a few of us on boards for helping him along.
It would have been nice to hear Ryan's opinion of Philip Larkin and have a conversation about him with David Walliams, his first guest on his new podcast, but Ryan couldn't and didn't care enough to ask a single question discussing Larkin. The guest is going to have to do a lot of lifting in this format. Just read the **** books Ryan.
Still a far cry from the RTE radio show or LLS numbers.
I lasted only a minute, 60 full seconds of hate listening! I should have given him more of a chance, but just looking at his face upsets me and reminds me about the 150,000 chances he had to redeem himself.
Maybe he's going for a Tommy Tiernan vibe, where he just wings it?!

Tommy Tiernan seems genuinely interested in his guests and their life stories. That's quite different from Tubridy and his podcast. The angle for Tubridy's podcast is supposed to be the guest's book selection. Don't think that Tubridy could do a Tommy Tiernan style show or podcast.
Perhaps he could fill them with the guest’s “picks” as the series progresses?
49 minutes. Not sure if I can handle 49 minutes. Like tax returns or applying several coats of paint to a vast wall, it's something I will need to gee myself up for.
I couldn't even be bothered to hate-listen at this stage. Sounds like he did no preparation nor even knows how to properly interview someone.
The really professional interviewers have their research done and read everything about the subject they are interviewing or as much as possible. They then likely send the interviewee a list of questions beforehand, and this benefits interviewer and interviewee as there's no surprises. Fairly sure Graham Norton does something like this as most of the interviewees have their stories and anecdotes well prepared.
He needs to listen to something like Desert Island Discs where interviews are genuinely seamless, well researched and prepared.
He was coasting in RTE with the help of a team of researchers to do the research. Not only do I not see this taking off, he risks becoming a laughing stock.

Searching for The Bookshelf under podcasts pulled up eleven podcasts with Bookshelf in the title, with his at the bottom.
You'll notice there's two of them, with different blurbs. One seems to be the generic Acast blurb, the other has the proper one.
Only uploads so far are the Coming Soon announcement, nothing else.
Not sure what happened that they doubled up the podcast.
Norton is a good example of a show based around interviewing people in primarily one field, namely showbiz like current music, TV and movies. He doesn't need to know everything about each guests, but he's always got fun titbits that can make everyone relax with eachother and allow them get on with doing their spot of promoting whatever they're in at that moment.
If someone promotes themselves as a book person in the English language they have to be at least aware of the major influences in anglosphere literature. They don't have to like the likes of Larkin, but they have to be aware of the influence he might have on his English guests.
I remember not really getting the Smiths in the 80s, but then in recent years after having lived in grim north England I totally understood where their music was rooted and could appreciate it, even if I still don't chime with it.
Every podcast outlet for Tubs states "David’s new book ‘ASTROCHIMP’ will be released on the 23rd of May and is available for pre-order now".
Always a good reason to appear on anything that might increase sales. Or maybe he's just another great friend of Tubs.
That's just not true. The podcast with Tommy,Hector and Laurita had run it's course but over it's 3+ years in existence there was a lot of gold in their output. Tommy and Hector were school-friends and could really bounce off each other. As for Lauriya? I really don't know what she brought to the party
In light of the poor prospects for the DLB's broadcasting career, perhaps the podcast should have been called "On the shelf with Ryan Tubridy"

Tbh, I don't really strongly care one way or another what he does, but, if I was listening to a podcast, ostensibly about all things literary adjacent, and the host had never heard of Phillip Larkin, then I'd have my severe doubts about how serious a bookworm they truly are. Tubridy is a bit of a dilettante.
But, on the other hand, I don't think that's a hanging offence.
It's not the type of production that is supposed to be an offshoot of The London Review of Books - it's really just a frothy show with a few media personalities.
Or just "Shelved"? :) It is all getting very Alan Partridge at this stage.
