Starting salary point on scale

I have a conditional offer for a Clerical Officer Grade 3 job. I have previously been on LSI 1 on a grade 4 prior to having my kids. I also have a 3rd level degree (which was preferable on the job application) The letter I got stated *You will be placed on point 1 of this scale - €27,896 per annum.
If offered the post, you may apply for incremental credit for previous industry and/or academic experience." Does anyone have any idea what point on the scale I might get put on if I provide them with the relevant documents? Thanks in advance.

If you were on LSI 1 on the grade 4 scale then you have a minimum of 11 years in the public service (?) meaning you'll start on point 12 of the grade III scale (€39,825)…. probably… I dunno ask HR. They'll start you on point 1 and request your previous unit/department to complete a previous service form.

I don't believe the 3rd level degree means anything to the grade III scale. Mine certainly didn't

For Civil service, you'd start at the bottom as level 4 isn't the same as a level 3 grade, and I haven't seen any public sector job advertisements using academic experience for an admin role in salary calculations

Academic experience won't count for scale increments, especially the lower grades. For higher and specific roles, HR might be able to make an arguement to LGMA but for clerical officers, no chance.

Your previous experience would be the better chance to argue with if they recongise the service history. If single pension scheme, it may not apply if you have such a big gap between public sector roles.

EDIT - Just checked and the gap of employment is 26 weeks. If more than 26 weeks, then you will be enrolled in the new single pension scheme, and HR would likely be inclined to start you on point 1 of the C/O salary scale.

Update: In case anyone else is reading and wondering the same as I was. I have been placed at point 10 on the scale of the pre-2011 scheme. Luckily my previous service has been recognised :)

Well done, I'm surprised you got back onto the pre-2011 scheme, I re-entered the civil service, after a spell in the private sector, went back on the same point of the scale as I left, but on the new pension scheme, as I was out for a year.

Same here....simply isn't possible...all new entrants out of the service for more than six months join the single scheme…my original defined benefit pension was preserved....but there was no question of being able to rejoin it.

pension wise I’ll be on the new scheme but the salary point on scale seems to be the old scheme as I was told it was point 10 on it. I’ll still have my old scheme pension separately I was told.

Not to takeaway from the offer and the HR were reasonable, but that circular is for existing public/civil servants not for someone who left and came back., there was a case where someone left a role for a few months as holidays before taking a new role and was made to start at the bottom of the scale, and level 3 is not the same as level 4 either. Great that you got sorted, I glad there are sensible HR officers in place.

Thanks! I do think that people should have their previous work recognised especially as they are gaining an experienced person. Perhaps they should update their regulations to reflect this. Many people take leave for various reasons / circumstances. :)

i left hse in 2019 at grade iii level iv, still have it highlighted on last payslip. So id hope to get back in at that if i showed them the payslip. I intend to reapply whenever a competition starts. I should never left

Best of luck with it. You should request a letter from them stating your grade, point on scale and salary. At least you'll have this if you go anywhere else in the public service. I was asked to get this from my previous employer. I was sorry too that I had actually left fully before but unfortunately I relocated down the country so had to leave.

@maggie magoo update. I got back in through agency in november 2024. I started back on the same part of scale from which i left
