I know the first proposal of this type of thread was shut down due to the OP tone.
I honestly think it time to start this discussion.
No further info.
In Conamara, two ex-FF Cllrs now running for Independent Ireland. Certain they'll get elected
Was said in Connacht City Tribune last Friday that FG did ask him to run but he rejected them.
Independents are in vogue it seems.
Local election is hotting up, poor old Noel Larkin must have upset somebody, full on personal attack from PBP in the letters of the Galway advertiser a few weeks back and now another hatchet job from a Labour party big wig on the front page of the advertiser (while also targeting the newly formed Independent party).Writer is Maxim Kelly a well known labour activist, I didnt know that the advertiser was linked to the labour party.
Don't know anything about Maxim Kelly's political ties but I have to say it's nice to see the odd bit of journalism in the Advertiser now, still mostly copy paste press releases but definitely better.
Is it an attack to point out that the new political party is such a void they think Colette Connolly and Noel Larkin could be in the same party?
Thankless job my eye, they do all right out of it.
True - they are casting a very very wide net thats for shure! ha ha
Those two would be Quare bedfellows alright but Fitzmaurice and Connolly would not be a strange fit considering their support of rural communities.
I am more disturbed at the fact that a labour party official has access to the front page of a free newspaper (with a circulation of 30k) especially at the time of an election.
Is Maxim Kelly really a "big wig"? I can't say I got any whiff of pro-Labour off his articles the last few weeks.
And when you say Connolly supporting rural communties, do you mean Collette or Catherine because I can't really see either making sense in that context.
Another West City Ward candidate.
Jarlath Feeney (entrepreneur) in the Galway Advertiser this week. Becoming a crowded ward.
Does this make transfers more of less important if we get more and more candidates in the West Ward?
He has massive influence alight. Getting a big picture of FG Mayor with beautiful baby on the front page of the Galway Advertiser is a Labour party masterstroke alright!

He has given McNelis soft coverage and quotes on other front page articles. Dodgy enough having a politically involved journalist writing political articles leading up to an election.
The fact that he is a labour party official should be of concern to everybody, but if his politics align with yours I can see why you see no problems.
Catherine Connolly has had a strong rural(connemara)voting base for many years and has been quite vocal about the survival and sustainability of rural communities just like Fitzmaurice. She garners many votes from outside Galway city.
Why would you think it was Colette , she is city based and mainly concerned with matters in her ward.
So you'd have no problem with a member of Independent Ireland writing the front page next week, good to know.
When your argument boils down to "clearly you support that" you're losing.
I don't know Maxim Kelly. I certainly had no idea that he's a Labour man. And I didn't get that impression from his articles either.
The Advertiser featuring an article with a Labour rep is hardly shocking. Galway Bay fm have articles with Niall McNelis too, I guess their newsroom is a Labour bastion as well….or else, they are just doing their job maybe.
The Advertiser has an editor. Maxim Kelly isn't sneaking in tactit pro-Labour articles, unless the conspiracy widens that Declan Varly is also a Labour "bigwig".
or Cllr John Connolly or Cllr. Dermot Connolly or Cllr. Michael Connolly
Losing what exactly,if you dont see a problem with a labour party official writing headlines for a local paper when we are approaching an election, thats on you and maybe your political preferences but i have a problem with it, let him declare his political connections otherwise its a party political broadcast.
Did you read the adveriser article, it specificialy mentions the Connolly sisters.
The Advertiser has an editor that has to approve everything in the paper regardless of who writes it.
So what you are effectively claiming is that the Advertiser is a Labour mouthpiece.
I think that claim is ridiculous.
I never claimed any such thing, but now that you mention it the editor should pull Kelly from political content until election is over because of his labour party connection and histoy. That would be the right decision for a paper that potrays itself as impartial and unbiased.
I don't know the man from Adam but are you stating that he has sole powers of writing headlines in the Galway Advertiser? Anybody can send in a PR with a few suggested Headlines and they often get published if they have a local relevance/interest.
The writer has strong links to the Labour party, he should be pulled from political content until election is over,he can then return to political content while stating his political affiliations and we can then treat his articles as opinion pieces.
It’s the Galway Advertiser. Hardly the paper of record. Like any free ad paper it’s full of puff pieces. Not worth getting excited about.
Anyone have dates for local radio debates or public debates where candidate views/manifestos will be queried?
Posters have flown up on varied poles overnight. It was nice dry calm night for it in fairness
Posters aren't allowed to go up until 30 days before the election, which would mean they shouldn't have gone up before midnight last night. But they were all at it.
Prime pole spots?
Busy roads with static traffic are prime locations, hence most local politicians want to fix the car traffic with more roads.
Cost is ~e40 per poster. That's lotto money literally thrown up a pole.
I was driving through Galway around 1:30am last night and I saw 3 vans with lads putting up posters. Two were on the "new" bridge.
I wish they'd just ban the election posters and mailbox spamming completely.
