I see Dovea Genetics are having a beef breeding webinar tomorrow at 8pm, the link is on their facebook page. It should be interesting.
I found him (Keltic Rembrandt) grand for cows anyway. His calves are nice and quiet too.
On last night
Kjb X rio cow. Had a terrible lm calf last year as a heifer as she'd no milk. Seems to have bagged down a good bit better this year.
anyone ever try Gstaad LM 4366 from Eurogene? His latest evaluation is 1.9% CD and 40kg carcass weight. Carries 2x F94L.
for scep this year it be hard to select 4 and 5 star sires at time of insemination
Is it the time of Ai, the first genomic evaluation or what stars the bull had in September 2023 that decides if it’s eligible for SCEP??
Lost a calf last week so bought a heifer calf to suck the cow keep her right as she's a good second calver and didn't want to get rid of her. I have to suck her in the chute for a last 5 days with a kicking bar thought that would soften her but not so without the bar she is kicking like hell. Anyone any idea how to get her to settle a bit ? tried the baby powder trick that was being pushed online didn't work. Would salt or sugar help get her bond with the calf?
Haven't put a calf on a cow in years remember now why I quit. I have no dough it will work I would just like to get them working quick as I need the calving pen back
Bring in a dog, she should protect the calf
cheers but I don't have a dog and don't think anyone would give me one for that
I presume at time of ai. Remember too when the calves are born it will be year 3 so 85% must be born to a 4 or 5 star sire. Ai man comes and two wrong choices ie a test sire for heifers say and you In trouble
confirmed with Icbf it is at time of insemination
If that’s true a bull could be SCEP eligible on a Mionday, new figures could be released on a Tuesday and he might be ineligible on the Wednesday.
A bit of meal will soften her, keep calf away between sucks so it not annoying the cow.
Had similar, nuts in bucket helped to distract…until the nuts ran out!
Took ~3-4 weeks, had them in shed, out shed, in shed, let out to paddock near shed – bringing them in every morning and night…. absolute torture.
Then when weather got real bad had to bring them back in, put the calf with other calves and cow back on slats … and that when it clicked with the cow.
She was looking for the calf and let it suck no problem…was like switch the change!
Presume it was the distraction of other cows/calves that gave her the nudge.
Good luck…perseverance
At the time of insemination or 4/5 star at any time back to July 1st last year will also qualify a bull for SCEP apparently.
Was thinking of trying this but only being 6 days its just habit short of a timeframe to test the bond. Same as that while the nuts are there she's content enough but she's actually figured out how to open the head gate and it's a fully automatic nugget. She's able to flick open the head width adjustment bitch I never seen that before. Today I cover the calf in calf crunch and I seen her licking him so I got some maple syrup in the house that never gets used I put that on him for a few days and keep her licking him maybe this will build a bond? or am I just wasting crunch and syrup
The meal does help but I remember a few years ago having to do it for weeks and all I did was make the cow stronger and her kicks heavier as she got fattened 🤣
Worth a shot, if she licking him...good sign. Better than kicking him :-)
Yeah Its something the kicking is a habit. Is there any injection you can give to a cow to just take the edge off her for a few days?
Oxytocin
how long would the effects last for ??
That's a question for your vet, but cows normally produce it when a calf sucks, helps them to bond aswell.
Have a few bb x Fr second calvers to AI hopefully this week they could do with an injection of height I am think of using either keltic rembrandt or proper powerful. I have a great pp bull calf very stylish and great muscle would be looking for same amount of style and if I got heifers to have the option to keep them
I'd use the ardlea bulls. Proper calves are awful plain.
Cows take in Oxytocin, when they lick the calf. Helps them bond to calf as said above. I often wiped the wet slime from a calf across the mouth of the cow to get it attached.
Has anyone else used Excel LM4027 from Bova? Had a heifer by him born this morning. Just wondering what others thought of him.
Do you know anything about the Saler bull Sligo Valentino??
I had one of him last year, a bull off a big plain limo heifer. I was expecting a poor price but he had good weight for age and a fairly well made calf, came into 1460 at ten months so couldn’t really complain.
Nothing wrong with that, he was quiet enough was he?
