Yards and meters are both of the order human sized, so that makes no sense.
I use meters because it's the measurement unit we use in this country and practically every other country in the world.
But it really doesn't matter, you can make up your own units.
Yards and feet is the best method for golf and most outdoor pursuits as the measurement device is the human body.
not sure why anyone cares what other people use, as noted, nobody measures their putts in cms. I’m not that old, but in running and golf I’ve always used yards and pace per mile and always will. I don’t mind courses being in metres though, it’s a standard. Same way I don’t mind running races being mostly 5k or 10k. Personally yards works better for club gapping with a slightly better resolution and as it happens most of golf English coverage is in yards also.
Only time it’s ever a bother is when half the group has ether laser in metres and other half in yards so more that one person has to measure.
Do all club scoring systems now require you to confirm whose card you are marking ?
Until now, system needed player name (you ) and marker name.
The system already knows who I’m marking ( From their input )
Missing a lightbulb moment for the reason for change.
Useful or gimmick?
Ah Of course, didn't even think of that 🫢
Yep, the 4 men's majors and the 5 women's majors
Have heard it a few times but not sure if I'm hearing it correctly, basically Sky are running an ad on today FM for Sky Golf and I'm pretty sure they mention in the ad subscribe to Sky to see all 9 majors live, has anyone else heard this a confirm?
if you use
yes
Frankly if you use yards then don’t cheer on Europe in the Ryder-we don’t need that type of support-
Don't give him anything you think he could miss.
Never assume you're out of a hole. We've all scratched a hole after being green side in 2. Your opponent might too.
And as regards your own game, just play normally. The format is a bit different but the general principle is the same - try to get the ball in the hole in as few stokes as possible.
And one more - if you need to make a putt, obviously try to get it to the hole, but don't blow it 10 feet by. A putt hit too hard has pretty much the same chance of going in as one not hit hard enough.
Playing my first ever singles matchplay tomorrow (assuming the weather doesn't stop it).
Any tips (other than don't play ****)?
Yes, but that's different. A foot is an appropriate length for measurement for a putt. A meter is not.
do the metres people measure their putts in feet?
One of my favourite snl clips for the metres Vs yards debate.
GolfNow is probably your best bet for getting the cheapest. There will usually be some timeslots going for a discount if you are flexible enough with when you can get out.
Golf has always been a game in yards. I cant stand metres! You watch it on telly and its yards..
it’s metres - we are in Europe
It used to annoy me. It tends to be metres to the middle or yards to the middle on par 3s and the front on the rest. The middle is the most important number for me, so guessing how far the middle is from the front just seems a needless annoyance. Mainly though I knew my distances in metres, so didn't like having to convert.
Plus using yards just feels like refusing to admit that things have moved on. It kind of feels like the type of thing Brexit supporters would pick a candidate over.
Of course, it's all irrelevant now anyway with watches and lasers.
Saying I blade my 60° 100yds is much more impressive sounding than 91 metres
Really though just depends what course you play,or started playing on. Even before I played golf I played Tiger Woods on a console and it was always yards.
What's the best site to pick up regular cheap deals for green fees these days?
Haven't played in about 5 years but hoping to get back into now that the kids are in school!
I used tee times and golf now back in the day. These still usable or are there better alternatives?
P.s. Tee times website still looks like something from the 1990s
Think the US and Engerland are the only countries still using feet and yards. I've Long since moved over to meters but yards still widely used as we watch a lot of golf in America.
Watching it on TV as a kid - these competitions were probably in the USA or maybe the UK.
Every ounce of me hates the fact that we haven't converted to meters or metres.
Using metres in golf makes me irrationally angry. I point blank refuse to do it. I'm not playing golf that long but it's always been yards whenever I remember watching it on TV even as a kid.
I don't see why it needs to be metres. There can be an international standard in place, which would be yards I'd imagine. I work in the railway and that uses mph, miles, yards, feet etc as that is the international standard.
I've no problem with km/h on the roads etc but with golf, I'm dead set on sticking with yards 😂
yep no luck 😩
I'm not old, I'm not that old, but metres confuse me on a golf course. They are unquestionable the better unit of measurement, but yards are just built into my brain at this stage.
Are Boards golfers very old? You all seem to work in yards rather than metres.
My home course uses metres.
Is it a sop to the yanks and the Brits?
I'm retired now and I have been using metres since I was a student.
Maybe I'm just getting cranky!
Knightsbrook is reasonable enough. You can play the course and then Killeen Castle another day (15 mins drive). They have onsite lodges which cater for 6/8 people.
🤦♂️
Anyone got suggestions for reasonable priced golf for a group of 24. Looking for 2 days of golf over a weekend so courses would need to be nearby but open to anywhere really. Looking around at courses and prices are just going up and up and up. Wondering are there any hidden gems out there. Half the group are flying in from Scotland so would be nice to keep costs reasonable but still play decent courses.
