Approval at cabinet was given yesterday for a strategy that will see council funding tied to implementing clean air and or congestion charging by 2030 as part of the sustainability push.
Even if it is some way off, I find it hard to see how a largely regressive taxation measure is going to go down well. Or maybe 2030 is too far away for people to care?
60kms is a VERY average commute to work. Lots of people have to do an awful lot more.
Where are the Green party in promoting jobs, I was going to say outside of Dublin.
But where are they providing opportuniteis to create employment anywhere.
The person I was responding to said people choose to live far from work due to family etc.
There are a myriad of reasons why a person has to travel for work that are out of the control of a person….it's a bit infantile to think otherwise.
Well if you choose to lives miles away from work then you've kind of made your own bed
I bought in D5 actually and my current cycle is 12kms. 60km commute to work is ridiculous imo.
I'm convinced you are trying to get me banned here…you can't be this stupid.
Irish women, or all women doesn't matter a jot…the assertion is a ridiculous one, only a stupid person can't see through the nonsense.
You are well able to dig up old and obscure posts to suit your narative. I gave you all the information you need.
Try googling a combination of "Green party are charlatans, commercial vehicles, 2008 , commercial vehicles can't be used to drop kids of"
We need to rethink how we get around, cars with 1 person most of the time is not a good way to transport people around town and cities. cars have also got a lot larger than 20/30 years ago and much heavier and electric cars weigh up to 2 tonnes or more even for a hatchback.
Motorbikes/scooters are ideal because they are proper single modes of transport and take up a lot less space for parking too. Modern 125 and 300 cc scooters can get up to 120 Mpg. that's 2.3L /100 Km.
Electric cars are not going to have any impact on congestion. So the Government should be trying to promote single person transport more but they don't promote it at all.
We need proper trains, there's no reason we couldn't have electrified our rail network at this stage being a small Island, we need fast rail commuter trains.
Dublin needs an underground and a DART like rail network for West Dublin, we need to link up our industrial estates with more than just bus stops ffs, this is 2024.
Ireland is a very long way from having a proper public transport network before they can consider congestion charges.
Whatever we think about climate change, Ireland's Co2 emissions is so low that nothing we do is going to have an impact one way or the other but the Government are in a race to make Ireland the World leaders in the fight against climate change, that is absolutely the craziest thing I've heard. There seems to be a mad rush to raise taxes as high as possible pushing people more and more into poverty, it shouldn't be tolerated, there are no viable alternatives for many people.
Yes, I'm serious that you were caught out spoofing again.
You specifically said that he was referring to Irish women and Irish LGBT people when there was no such reference in his comments.
That's what you get when you swallow Grift nonsense whole, I suppose.
Duplicate post
I have comprehensive insurance on my older car.
How exactly did you work out that I had no problem with grants for EVs? Are you just making this stuff up?
Are you serious…
So he did say that women and gay people are adversely affected by Climate Change….just like I said he did. And you just swallow that up like the good little believer that you are….my god man, can you think for yourself at all?
Eamonn Ryan is an idiot, he is the perfect example of a man promoted way beyond his competency level….you are the loyal follow of an idiot!
Does anyone with an older car buy comprehensive insurance? Genuinely don't know because I've never bought anything more than TPFT, and even that was often a waste of money considering I drove my previous car until it just wouldn't move anymore. Under what circumstances does comprehensive cover parts and repair to the insured car, and even then, why would simply writing off a car not be an option if the parts/labour were more than the car was worth?
Here's the actual quote from Ryan, which has no mention at all of Irish gay people and Irish women, but obviously you fell for the Gript misinformation around this, and lots more apparently.
"Ireland's long-standing support for climate justice and adaptation recognises that women, girls, LGBTQ+ people and other marginalised groups are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis and are more vulnerable to the shocks and stresses associated with current and future climate change. "
Irish government are doing SFA to combat climate change. Why would you think I'm in some way shilling for the Irish government or data centres?
What rule would that be now please?
Most people choose to live near where they grew up, have family and friends near by, have Children that maybe the grandparents take care of.
Most of the decent paying jobs are in Dublin so people have to commute long distance by car because public transport is crap.
Thanks. That's a fabulous idea. Looking forward to 4 hrs round tri
I think you will find house prices are the problem. We can't all live n D4 eating avacdos cycling 2km to work in our patagonia feeling smug. Thanks for your post.
why did you take a job 60km from your work? that's your problem there
I grew up in a disadvantaged area in a council estate, I know what it's like to not have much. I have a car and work in the city centre like many others. Will i stand around in the rain for nearly an hour for an over packed bus and be late in the process? The Green party will go the way of Labour if they don't cop on(Apart from Dublin south) where they live in a bubble and don't know the struggles of everyday people. If congestion charges come in they need to be proportional to income because if not it's another tax on the less well off. Public transport/infrastructure isn't up to scratch.
'Save for perhaps comprehensive insurance' - you mean the kind of insurance that most of us have?
So you think the less well off are driving into congested city centres and paying the high parking prices?
What i want is the less well off to not be taxed out of existence trying to get to work. We're supposed to be a rich, wealthy country, Where's all the money going? Our infrastructure is a joke. You're not going to save the planet by taxing the poorer in society.
It is an alternative but not the only alternative and without wanting to speak for Andrew, this is the obvious interpretation to anyone who isn't deliberately looking to take offence.
As for the Greens being "tax tax tax", please name one tax the Green party have actually imposed on the nation?
Also bear in mind that the "tax" that this thread is discussing is an option that local authorities will make the decision on (so it will be your local councillors, not Ryan, etc). However, the local authority may choose not to go down the route of congestion charging but lets not let that get in the way of peoples need to moan about the Greens.
Do you need to drive into blanch or calmount?
Or into the city centre?
Because no matter where you drive from, if your destination is in the city centre there is always some place you can park and switch to PT, thereby avoiding congestion charges.
Where did i get that idea? Most of them are against it yes. Here, Eamon says it's too expensive for a country the size of Ireland. I thought we're wealthy and rich? Will he put the congestion and other taxes towards this? Are we just going to build a country will cycle lanes and save the planet that way?
With respect, how else do describe a person who thinks the world is going to end?
Your green buddy Andrew who I quoted above mentions cycling as a vaiable alternative mutiple times.
Green party is tax tax tax. Where is the infrastructure apart from get on your bike. Its fairly obvious if you can see past the tax take benefits of green party politics
One Example below
Let me spell it out, if you believe we are in a climate crisis, then you are a climate alarmist!!
With respect, that's a really, really, really stupid comment!
Who exactly is saying that you need to cycle everywhere? Not anyone kn this thread. Not Ryan. Not the Greens or any other government party. So maybe you can tell us who is saying this?
If it's all so urgent, explain how the earth was significantly hotter in the past, yet we still exist today? It also had significantly higher CO2 levels in the past but it didn't stop the earth from spinning either. We live in Ireland, there's little to no obvious evidence of the world burning if you weren't been told about it constantly by the media and "experts".
I'm all for doing our bit, but that's just it. It's a bit. It's not our job to overcompensate for China or India or wherever. Nor is it right that we'll import wood or beef or whatever from ex rainforest so smug Ministers can pat themselves on the back for creative carbon accounting. You seem to have some notion that traffic is the devil because it's powered by hydrocarbons and some weird preoccupation that it's somehow subsidised by the government. Yet you'd no problem with the likes of Grants for EVs or Bike to work schemes subsidising your lifestyle? If it all suddenly switched to electric vehicles and Eirgrid could somehow wave a magic wand and be able to accommodate 100% renewables, would you still be concerned about the air quality and beg for Congestion charges? Or would you see it for what it is - another tax with little tangible benefits?
