why can you not believe your ears? I thought Today FM had gone back to occasionally playing these type of songs in the last 2 years?
From the early-mid '80s? I don't know what Today FM you've been listening to recently, but no, they don't. They sprinkle the playlist very very lightly with a few obvious hits from the mid 90's now and then, but thats as far back as they go. (excluding the annual 6 weeks of Christmas music obviously).
That's a regular on the Friday 80s show.
does that show still exist?
Even if it does, my point still stands. This is not music you will typically hear on this station.
Each night Sunday to Thursday Ed Smith plays 2 hours of "Today FM Rock" from the 70s onwards
The Pedantic Pat’s in here haven’t taken the weekend off it seems. Let me rephrase it for those that can’t grasp the obvious. Today FM don’t typically play music like this at any time in their daytime schedule. 10pm onwards is obviously a tiny minority audience. And I am a big fan of Ed. I wish he was on earlier.
For a number of years, Radio Ireland/Today FM had a show called Friday Night 80s from 7pm which was then ditched some years ago. Friday 80s Show is a new one that started close or or during the pandemic and its starting time is later.
Common People fùck yeah!
Not all that uncommon to hear it on Today FM. Now, when Ed had control of his own playlist, you'd sometimes get the William Shatner version! Second-best cover song, ever!
(God, I miss Songs of Praise, and the three or four times a year 'covers' specials… Still. If they hadn't changed it, I guess I'd hear Coldplay less, and I'd never hear Blink 182…🤔)
I wonder will the music God's in Today FM let Ed play I am the Resurrection first tonight as is tradition or will it be Coldplay, Green Day or Jimmy Eat World?
Yesterday FM was great all weekend, lots of songs you'd generally never hear on Today FM. Although, there were a few songs included for certain years that they'd play all the time anyway (Katy Perry, Cornershop, poxy Bruno Mars etc…)
Good to hear Dermot on with Dave today! And yes he did ask him does he wash his legs.
It wasn't, wasn't it? Though it did seem slightly skewed towards the 2004-2013 period, I didn't hear any 80s year come up, and I think the oldest year I heard was 1994. But still a big improvement on the current playlists.
They went back to 86 for definite.
I had it on a good bit over the weekend and I got the inkling that the presenters themselves had some input into which years they selected. E.g. I heard Quilty on twice over the weekend and both times he had a couple of great hours from the early to mid '80's. Whereas other shows definitely seemed more skewed towards 2012-ish onwards and then you're hearing plenty of tunes that they play regularly anyway.
Overall, a big improvement over what they usually do and I found myself not switching station, anticipating what year they might do next.
Don't do it, you buggers! You're going to make me go back and see what they played and put a year against every hour to see what years they did and didn't cover! But I can confirm they did at least three if not four years of the 80s. I presume 1984 was meant to be the first year, I dunno.
Yeah 1984 was definitely done.
86 was Friday either 11-12 or 12-1 as I was on a bus at the time.
March 29 11-12: 1986 3-4: 1989
March 30 1-2: 1985 5-6: 1987
March 31 12-1: 1988 4-5: 1984
April 1 12-1: 1990
I went to have a listen back to a show on the Today Fm app there and noticed Stephen Daly is gone from the schedule and replaced by Ben Murray. I hope Stephen Daly left on his own terms because he was a great presenter.
What is this karaoke nonsense on the last word now?? Is it a regular thing? I haven't listened to it in years but being subjected to it in an nct centre, forgot me headphones!
No it's just a special for the Big Busk fundraiser they're doing today.
Sports news on this evening was about two days old.Talking about Champions league games earlier in week.
Was that not the sports on The Last Word? I didn't hear any Champions league reports on the news today. Was all golf in the masters
Was at 7 o clock news.Wrong button pressed !
Yep, they've done that before, I heard them at 8 pm one evening reciting the previous evening's sports news and talking about an upcoming game that was played the previous night. But at 9 it was back to normal. If it's a quiet night in sport they must just play a recording from earlier in the day... and sometimes pick the wrong day...
He wasn't on this weekend again. All of his images seem to be gone from the web page too. Hope he will pop up elsewhere because he was actually a great jock.

Up early 😁
Oh dear... While the sports news was on this morning after 9 am (i.e. just a minute or two ago), a voice came in saying "Good morning Dave". I'm guessing it's a prerecorded interview, maybe even the show announcer? I know a lot of the stuff has to be recorded in advance due to people's scheduling and all, but it's a very unprofessional look.
Alan Cantwell has the smoothest voice in radio 😀
