Possibly the Army training in The Curragh earlier ?
anyone else noticing the large volume of discarded boxes of nitrous oxide around the town?! Empty boxes and canisters of the gas left by the roadside in various parts. there’s a big problem going on with kids inhaling this stuff and I don’t think it’s been highlighted enough
The canisters are everywhere around the town, its crazy
There was a video floating around Facebook but it was from several years ago. Probably that…
Compliments to those who organised the display in Linear Park. It’s looking great.
Let’s just hope it’s not vandalised.
Anyone know why announcements regarding the three outstanding vacancies for Newbridge LEA’s is taking so long?
If it took 6 counts for Pender to reach quota then it's going to take a lot more for the last three.
Second recount starts this morning
Melissa Byrne was one vote ahead of James Stokes.
After the first recount, he went two ahead so Aontu asked for another check.
Full recount this morning at 10am.. Stokes was 1 behind Byrne so a recount was held, he then came out 2 ahead of Byrne and Aontu pushed for another recount
Thanks for the heads up Folks. Just checked, only 5 LEA seats outstanding, 3 in Newbridge & 2 in Birr.
Second recount saw them tied at 1,098 votes each with Melissa Byrne going through due to a greater number of first preferences.
However Sinn Fein have requested a third recount which is now underway.
Finally: 6 councillors elected:
Tracey O’Dwyer (Fine Gael) Peggy O’Dwyer (Fine Gael) Chris Pender (Social Democrats) Noel Heavey (Fianna Fáil) Tom McDonnell (Independent) Rob Power (Fianna Fáil)
Very disappointing to hear that the implementation of Phase 2 of the revised fares structure is delayed until at least Q1 of 2025. This means that neither the reduced fares or leap card implementation will be in place in Newbridge or Kildare Town this year.
The reason given is that the contractor cannot fulfil the technical work in time. However, both Newbridge and Kildare have leap card validators (like the ones at Heuston, not the Luas style ones like in Sallins & Naas). Kildare only has access from one side of the station, meaning no further validators are required there (since everyone must come through the same entrance). Newbridge would only need more on platform 2 for the second entrance there.
Regardless of whether leap validators are installed, the reduction in fares should have still gone ahead in a similar way to how the price adjustments happened in Phase 1 a few weeks ago.
There is a petition by Chris Pender to urge the NTA to reconsider this delay
I was up at Tescos today & noticed a woman protesting on the centre reservation ( outside KFC ) holding a placard complaint about RTÉ hiding the Covid numbers ( or words to that effect ) .
What is she trying to say?
Are they back? There was a group of those guys some time last year. Conspiracy theory stuff.
Newbridge draft town plan is posted on the bus stop on the Bord na Móna side of the street and of course online.
Parking to be removed from Bord na Móna side of street down to bridge. All parking both sides to be removed from post office all the way to finlays garage. Notions of using existing parking that included Dunnes private car park.
Notions of asking/begging for a bus route in town.
Opening up a route (already there but not open yet) from Brennan's garage through housing estate to meet Standhouse road. Section marked towards blackberry lane but hard to tell if they plan going there as the rail líne comes across that bit of land.
Not a whole lot to the plan but it's taken long enough to get to this point. If anyone remembers, the last one had closure of GAA car park and making it a through way. That's long gone.
Other than that, the GAA grounds entrance looks impressive. 2 sets of turn stiles. That was once supposed to move out to Tougers and that land to be sold to developers. Plan for that was circa 2006. As I said above, notions.
Removal of *some* on-street parking is probably needed given how narrow the main street is. However it is worth pointing out that on-street parking is free before 9.30am & after 5.30pm & no charge applies on Sundays. If people are directed to use Whitewater & Town Centre car parks then they’ll have to pay. Consequently they may make other arrangements & businesses could lose out.
That was might first thought too. The main street is looking derelict enough as it is. This definitely won't help matters.
Agree, especially from the PO down.
Yes, that's a particularly severe move. I always go into town early Saturday morning for breakfast. Usually park on Main Street and am out by 9.30am so no charge for parking. Having to find a spot on Eyre Street or Henry Street or fork out for Town Centre makes it much less appealing.
Is the GAA car park not free until 9.30 on Saturdays (and other days)?
It is - the problem with that is turning right at the exit. But I suppose it's an option albeit further away from where I usually park. Not an issue if it's fine, but a pain in the rain.
With parking gone from that side of the road, exiting the GAA carpark will be made a lot easier.
On-street parking provides less than 50 spaces on the main street from the Liffey to Michael Murphys, but causes many of the traffic delays, is unsightly and simply not condusive to a vibrant town centre.
More attractive pathways, and clutter free roads are better for business.
Have to say as someone who lives in moorefield park not a fan of this at all the can keep the walls closed and anyone else there I've spoken to tends to agree.
Do you object to all of them or just one or two? A friend of mine used to live exactly at one of the openings but he and his family are long gone at this stage.
Never thought I’d say this but great to see the roof nearly complete at McDonalds - surely an indication to progress to re-opening?
I'm abit dissappointed that it looks pretty much the same layout as the previous building.. now was the time to have a re-think and plan the entrance/exit in a more efficient manner.. The Moorefield Road will become a no-go area once they re-open due to the traffic congestion the junction it causes.
It got it's planning permission originally on the basis that the entrance was not on the residents side. Can't blame them really. I'm guessing the rebuild does not require new PP so no changes to traffic flow will occur. Even without McD, the junction is poor most weekends.
Imagine the anti fast food types who would try and block any planning - hence a rebuild identical to the previous building.
From the PO down the town is only getting worse. I see hickeys has closed. The old arch bar had planning approved for a café or restaurant but that hasnt opened yet, the old chartbusters had approved planning for a business(cant remember what) but that looks like it has fallen apart. The old keg was approved for a two story restaurant/café but is now for sale. As a life long resident of the town its sad to see that end going the way it is.
