Do we need a second shower pump?

Hi,

We have an attic conversion with an ensuite and we've got a Stuart turner 2 bar negative head pump in the hot press to pump hot and cold to the attic. We are now thinking of putting a new shower into our main bathroom (which is currently electric) - would we need to put a second pump in (positive head?) or would we be able to replace the current pump with a more powerful one to handle both bathrooms?

The negative head will work fine for both bathrooms just not at the same time. Pressure wouldn't be great with 2 bar pump running 2 showers at the same time

3bar shoild bw OK IMO, the 2bar will give 7LPM from each end at a 1.5bar head & the 3bar will give 14LPM from each end at 1.5bar, you will get a reduced flow though with both on together depending on the distance from the pump but the 4.5bar pump but very much of a overkill IMO.

An alternative might be to use a constant pressure pump such as the DAB EsyBox Mini.

On these you can set the desired pressure on the digital display and the pump will ramp up and down as necessary depending on demand to maintain the set pressure.

sorry yes, that pump wouldn’t be suitable for both hot and cold feed to a shower without an unvented cylinder. (It’s not a dual pump)

The continually ramping constant pressure functionality was what I was promoting. I have had good experiences with them - works very well to deliver consistent pressure and flow rates even with multiple outlets being turned on and off at different times.

thanks all for the replies, we had a plumber out and for now we will stick to the pump we have and see how we get on. We are though going to put in a bigger hot water cylinder so we avoid running out of hot water!

You should get ~ 6 to 7LPM from each shower with both on, let us know the performance.

just to close this thread out we did get the bathroom renovated and hooked up the new shower to the pump, all working fine with decent pressure and no cold showers!

yeah - no noticeable drop in pressure, they both have rain shower heads so perhaps that’s helping…
