Indeed. When asked about the princess of wales story, she began by explaining about the photoshopped picture being “killed” by media outlets…as if none of the listeners were aware, Brendan had to move her “swiftly on” she brought absolutely no analysis to any story she was asked about, and her English was too poor to be given this slot.
She probably ticked a few boxes.
It's headed Biography, not Autobiography, so not her own output.
If you keep having the same people on and keep asking more or less the same questions, you just get the same ......
Really struck this morning by how much Alison thinks of herself and her opinions on matters.
Couldn't agree more - she might as well have been reading off the Guardian or RTE news site. Complete lack of analysis or insight beyond the basics.
Apart from above, the first 30 mins of the show were like a FG party broadcast - how great is Simon.
He is - Once a month is bang on.
He shows up on VM's tonight show and other various radio shows - One would be forgiven for thinking he had a powerful agent on his side but I couldn't possibly comment any further on that
See above
Village mag did an article on it showing AO'C as joint #1 at the time
Alongside O’Connell [Kate], the upper part of the table of most frequently used panellists comprises a tier of guests on semi-regular rotation: think columnists Alison O’Connor and Brenda Power, sociology and political science academics Niamh Hourigan and Gary Murphy respectively, economist Dan O’Brien and security analyst Declan Power, to name a few.
That article is about 5 months old and Alison would've been on 5/6 times since putting her firmly in the #1 slot now
And of course in RTE land, everyone is “great”.
Yes, 100% correct. It’s an echo chamber, we get the same opinions from the same small circle of people. At one stage he had Stephanie pressnier on at every opportunity, he labelled her “the voice of her generation “….sweet Jesus. It’s an insight l suppose as to what goes on in Brendan’s kitchen…maybe it’s recorded in Brendan’s kitchen 🧐 this new person obviously “ticks boxes” as another poster astutely observed. Lack of ability seems to irrelevant
RTE has hit on a formula which attracts listeners. In particular the Brendan O'Connor programme is so addictive that even those listeners who hate it, feel compelled to tune in every week.
RTÉ Radio One gains 68,000 weekday listeners in 2023 despite financial scandal
Latest JNLR figures - collated in the three months to November 2023 - show a surge in listeners Radio One shows, including Morning Ireland, Brendan O’Connor and the Business
it will be gas when he eventually gets around to discussing the Jeffrey Donaldson news, he’ll be sh@&eing himself in case someone says something they shouldn’t. By the way l had to laugh when he said it looked like spring today? It’s another **** cold and wet day. But maybe the heatings on in the studio… who knows
I knew he wouldn’t go near the Jeffrey Donaldson story. This offering is absolutely crud.
it’s tripe and all l can hear is him saying mm mm mm mm mm mm in agreement in the background while his guests are speaking . He’s wimping out of the Donaldson story
That last contributor sounded like he was in pain.
This phone line thing is diabolical, and Brendan comes across as a total amateur trying to rescue it
"Start again" 🙄😂
Brendan O'Connor, the sixth highest paid RTÉ broadcaster, earned just over €245,000 in 2021 and in 2022 and in 2023.
For this stuff?
with respect, he was paid it, he didn’t earn it.
I think he's the highest paid presenter person in RTE on a p/hr basis -
This is just for radio - JD and CB get more for TV stuff - What you have to remember is, if they don't pay the big fees they'll go to some 2 bit radio station in the UK and be paid less than a third of their fees here - we can't let that happen
He sounds like he's just out of bed today. Hadn't even skimmed through the papers before he went live. "Ah, ah, ahem, ah ,ah".
By far the biggest story in Ireland at present, with potential to bring the North to a halt again, is glossed over in a minute or two.
THis guy talking sense about the road deaths, doesn't fit the media narrative though.
What did he say?
I'm not listening, but a wild Guess would be the traffic corp being gutted.
I think it was we had 600+ road deaths a year in the 1970s and our population was 3m, now it is 180 a year and our pop is 5.3m
Yip, this.
And that our roads are quite safe compared to many other countries.
The DUP, Orange Order and Ulster Protestantism will not suddenly cease to exist because of Donaldson's predicament. It just means his political career is at an end. There are plenty who can fill his boots.
Still no reason why it got 2min of discussion.
Either they are discussing the news stories or they aren't.
I suppose discussion about ongoing legal proceedings live on air is a minefield. Someone could say something that could be deemed prejudicial or slanderous. Presenters and programme producers are keenly aware of that.
The pearl clutching about road deaths is just another example of obsessive nanny statism ( which of course RTE are huge supporters)
While every road death is tragic, we don't have dangerous roads in Ireland
I agree with you about the roads, but we do have a lot of dangerous drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on our roads who recklessy break the rules with apparantely no thought for the consequences.
Contrary to its tagline, this show is allergic to robust discussion.
There is a consensus that is evident in most discussions . This comes down to the presenter and panel selection.
Maybe that is what they want but it makes for poor fare.
I switched over to Oldies and Irish.
