Well she farted a bull calf out. Not big at all considering the length of time she carried.
Serious calves.
Have two blue heifers that are soon due AI they had there first calves in Jan a SA and a LIM heifer calf each. Was gonna put a LIM on both of these but was debating maybe to go with an easy calving CH bull like ORBI have some of his calves and they are tiny but develop well after. Only use PG bulls also
Are they roomy? CH on a BB can be iffy with bone & muscle
They wouldn't be bad but still blues. But some of this CH easy calvers are suitable for heifers now bulls like orbi so was thinking along them lines. ( I wouldn't use a CH on a heifer but they are advertised as suitable ) and having seen calves from orbi they are very small nearly disappointing when he was on a few cows but developed fast
Orbi is a Q gene carrier. Blues are going to be NT carriers. Could be looking at big birth weights with them 2 crossing. Charolais bone and Blue muscle, serious calves but you might earn it
Have an Orbi calf off a Charolais heifer, who was 285 days & small. Developing well. CHxCH is bone, CHxBB/LM is bone x muscle, If those heifers calved pre 290 days I’d give a chance but make sure they’re fit @ calving. Also don’t overfeed in first trimester too
Would over feeding in the last trimester not have a bigger impact, or are you thinking about laying down fat in birth canal.
we give hay in last trimester and have found calves are no smaller even with reduced quantities. A fairly smart farmer told me recently that the calf size is determined in the first trimester.
Majority of growth in last trimester. Do think rationing feed makes a big difference. Used to have cows Ad lib on silage years ago and the calfs would be big soft tanks. You would need a crane to lift the hoors. Maybe the smart farmer meant something else about the breeding but if he was referring to growth rate I think he is off the mark.
From what i’ve seen of BBX cows, the problem with them is that you never know what kind of calf you’re going to get, you could get a small plain calf or a massive calf with loads of muscle. A neighbour of mine used to cross a CH stock bull on some BBX cows, helped him jack the biggest bull calf i’ve ever seen one night, broke the calfs leg jacking him, calf died then, should have sectioned her, must have been 80kgs plus, two of us could hardly move him, he puts Saler bulls on the bluex cows now and has more out of them, some lovely roan heifers.
Thanks HK didn't know that
What progressive genetics lim bulls are lads using on cows? Selection seems poor enough for terminal sires.
Agree what your saying about BBx cows, had them here with the lim bull for a couple of years, found different type calf every year with them, one year a great muscle calf E or U grade the following year an R grade calf. Some were put to the Charolais bull and a grey coloured calf and not a great seller, calf colour sells the weanlings at the end of the day,
What AA breeding is providing quality over last few years. Have been going LM road solely and not up to date on AA but want to try a few this season
Not a good selection, gonna try ardlea rigby on a few 2nd calvers this year to see how he goes. Will use mainly dovea and bova bulls as a better selection.
The same Rigby was the only one that stood out.
Have calves off Rigby & Rolex, nice calves
Was talking to a local Dovea Ai tech last week, he reckons that Stouphill Bomber is breeding quality stock, he thinks he’s a great bull. He likes Bunlahy John G but he’d be harder calved. Goulding Man oh Man from NCBC carries the double muscle gene, might be worth a look. Those Ballyart bulls and the likes of Westellen Diageo from Bova are another option. I like the look of Drumcrow Reeko from bullbank, he’s €30/straw tho. I’m sure there are others, best ring around a few breeding advisors from the different companies.
A lot of Angus breeding has gone down the road of short gestation very easy calving runts of bulls for the dairy herd in recent years, you’d want to avoid those kind of bulls imo.
Sorry Rolex looks good too.
used Rigby here too. Him, Rolex and Shannon Stan seem to be their main bulls but none of them proven.
I was told that lisna sir is a serious quality bull. have very good quality calves this year from proper and knell.
I was at a Lisna pedigree heifer sale a few years back in Gort Mart. Really nice quality all round.
They have two now in progressives. Don’t know anything about the lisna some bull but would think sir would work well on a taller type cow. I find with progressives they tend to get a bull of say lisna or ardlea and they tend to return to them as assumed to getting a bull in France or something. Maybe it’s just me. Overall I have no complaints with any of there bulls.
I found Keltic Rembrandt (LM8259) good too.
Have put him on cows hoping for replacement heifers
Haven't been a fan of Munster bulls for a few years but liked the breeding of Rembrandt last year and got Rigby through Gene Ireland.
About 10 Rembrandt on the ground and so far both bulls and heifers are streets ahead of the Rigby's in my view. Find I've been losing size in the Limousines the past few years and feel the Foreman breeding ( Rembrandt's dam is a Foreman) will potentially help start to correct that. Calves on the ground so far are a step in the right direction!!!
I bought 2 cows (Rio & hca) in calf to powerful proper. Two very very plain calves so far.
Best f94l gene lim bulls out there for 2nd calvers onwards? Any company and terminal/ replacement or both.
Is he easy calved would he suit BBxFr second callers not the biggest stock not gona put CH on them. He has a lot of size to throw the calves up as well
