I assume you’re referring to Elisa O’Donovan?
If it's Elisa, I would think she has her eyes on a Dail seat but she might use the DEM as a means of increasing her public profile in Limerick
I was thinking DEM, then Dail. But you might be right.
Best of luck to her. Always liked her.
Interesting, two non-politicians who would regularly brush shoulders with politicians in their former roles running for mayor... Certainly an interesting election coming up
The legislation creating the DEM has been signed into law by the President.
Helen O'Donnell throws her hat in the ring
Elisa O’Donovan launched her campaign this morning. I expect a number of other sitting councillors will launch theirs shortly.
Conor Sheehan’s name has been thrown around a bit for Labour and there’s talk Frankie Daly will run as an independent. Also awaiting FG and SF candidates amongst others.
That's mad, I actually thought I linked her tweet to here earlier, must never have pressed send and then backed out of the thread
Anybody but her, she is **** insufferable.
She no sooner had he name in the hat and up surfaces that old clip of her filming the people that held outdoor prayers near the O'Connell monument during Covid.
I like her, as a public rep I rate her highly but she does shoot herself in the foot every so often
Why do you rate her highly ? She appears devoid of imagination and original ideas to me.
Is voting in this going to be PR STV?
Her only crime there was she gave those clowns exactly the publicity they were looking for.
Nothing special about her same as any of the other councillors but thanks to this fake culture wars nonsense that some on social media are obsessed with she gets way more love and hate than an average councillor should.
A few articles up on this now. Anyone know when the cut off date is for actually declaring is?
There will only be one winner so it’ll presumably be a first past the post system.
What is the problem with her?
She has always struck me as decent and socially conciense.
Accepting of other people and willing to change her views. Case in point. I remember her being very activie with the anti choice movement in UCD. She has since come around and is very pro choice.
Nope, just like the Presidential election it will be the single winner version of PR:STV. Candidates will be eliminated after each count in the same way they are in normal elections until only one is left and they will be declared the winner.
Ah okay! Good to know!
Not sure if it's been confirmed but fairly sure it will be similar to presidential and by-elections.
The winning candidate will need 50%+1 of the votes and your voting card will allow you to give each candidate a preference etc etc
Will this directly elected mayor have the power to usurp the functions and decisions of the county manager and sitting councillor or merely be similar to a non-executive chairman of a corporation?
Takes most powers off the Chief Executive (City/County Manager role hasn't existed for some time now).
The Mayor will take on executive functions, at a strategic or policy level, in areas including:
The Mayor will be responsible for proposing the annual budget to the Council.
The Mayor will be responsible for the current functions of the Cathaoirleach outside the Chamber, including the important representative role in Limerick, nationally and internationally.
A new role of Príomh Comhairleoir replaces that of Cathaoirleach who will chair the elected Council and act as its speaker (with support from the Leas-Phríomh Chomhairleoir).
The Mayor will be an ex officio member of the council, in addition to the existing 40 members, subject to similar rights, responsibilities and duties as any other elected member.
New structures and functions for the mayor will include:
The Limerick Directly Elected Mayor will be a member of:
We've got another one, Dr Laura Keyes, this time from a new party, Rabharta, seems to be a Greens spinoff

Can anyone run? Feels like we should do a Boardsie candidate for Limerick's Sexiest Mayor. 🤔
And another Sarah Beasley from Aontú

Mostly candidates trying to raise awareness so far. Leddin the only big hitter so far.
Big hitter or not, the fact that Dee Ryan is the FF candidate gives her as good a chance of winning, if not better seeing as the FF vote is much larger than the Green vote. The same will apply for whoever gets the FG and SF nominations.
I think Elisa O'Donovan, Brian Leddin & John Moran will take votes off each other, the question then will be which of them is eliminated first and where will their transfers go.
Helen O'Donnell could pick up traditional FG votes and could get transfers from EOD, BL and JM is she's still in the race and they're eliminated.
I think Brian Leddin will suffer because of his link to the government and the Greens.
John Moran is an interesting one who could get a decent amount of first preferences and spread his seconds all over the place.
Won't know for sure with independents until campaigning starts properly.
Yeah as above I would see the FF candiate as a big hitter and will do well for the ff vote at least i would say ,not sure BL would win,the FG nomination seems to be all over the place and no idea who /if sf are putting forward, my own preference since i cant vote in this would be anyone but BL, Has some ok ideas but i do think he is very green narrowminded. dont think he will have the appeal throughtout the city and county. hard to gauge JM ,Is he know outside the city?
