Last time out he was trying to pardon people in advance, it didn't work out.
They already do though: when Biden makes a comparatively brief passing slip, the leap to the "cognitive decline" conclusion would strain a muscle, and sustains the contrarians for days. Biden hasn't made anything even remotely this egregious but witness the silence. Our resident centrist only posting a drive by sharing of Trump's Truth Social post.
Again though, I just can't help wonder if the silence is born from unspoken agreement, that migrants aren't people, aren't to be treated or considered humans to care about - there's a lot of that about.
I don't disagree, the prosecution of Nixon and the underlining of criminal interference and direction of same by a sitting POTUS, as being criminal acts carrying criminal sanction?
Would certainly have made the efforts by Trump and others falter at their inception. Instead it fostered a belief that apart from violence, that all's fair in US national politics.
But the question here is not about pardoning in advance, which indeed is not possible.
I'm not convinced that Nixon would have tested the waters of self-pardoning even if possible, because there was still some vestige of political normality about the whole affair. That is out the window now.
I agree. It’s very stark watching the coverage of the Nixon resignation it makes you think how civilised it was then, even though the it was a serious incident. And everyone in the news media tried to spin his resignation speech as humble and dignified, well all bar Roger Mudd who in a polite way called Nixon a “bollocks.”
One should remember that it was a triumvirate of senior Republicans, including Barry Goldwater, who visited Nixon and delivered the message, resign. Long way now from that. Don't see Jim Jordan stepping up.
I've read and seen first hand a feeling of betrayal and disillusionment by some people with Obama. Some people genuinely thought as president he could wave a magic wand and fix the world. A feat made more difficult by the people also electing a republican congress. The phrase giving with one hand and taking with another springs to mind.
This perceived betrayal helped spark the rise of Trump. Trump promise(d/s) so much. Better relationships with Russia and China, protecting the border etc. Perhaps with a second term, he could have, but his own narcissism prevented a second follow up term. While the Cult of Trump lives on, for the swing state voters the spell has been broken and I predict a landslide victory for Biden.
Traditionally, if a president made promises and failed to deliver on them, that would've been on them, but Trump has successfully cultivated a large group of people where he can blame any failure of his on the 'deep state' working tirelessly against him.
Which are the 'battleground' states of the 2024, or are looking likely to be so?
According to this article, those are Georgia, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona.
Arizona is currently leaning towards Trump by 4 points in the latest listed poll by Fox News, with a margin of error of 3 percent. Fox News probably would say that, but it's just theirs that's latest. Slightly earlier polls by more neutral outlets still give the lead to Trump as of now, with varying margins of error and between 6% - 16% saying they're undecided. Looks to be too close to call right now.
Georgia also looks to be too close to call, with the latest CBS poll giving a 3 point advantage to Trump, but with a 3.9% margin of error.
Nevada looking a bit more grim for Biden at this point in time with only one of the five latest polls on the Wiki giving any less than a five point lead to Trump.
Michigan polls are giving a slight lead to Trump, but are all in or around the margin of error.
Pennsylvania again appears to be leaning a little more towards Trump right now. The point swing between the latest polls is a bit wider, but the latest Emerson College poll has Trump up by 4.
Wisconsin also tight right now, but with most polls also giving a slight edge to Trump.
The Biden campaign need to get the finger out and allow no complacency to take over. These numbers may shift as more voters become attuned to the elections, but Trump will try every trick in the book and a fair few he's written himself in order to disrupt proceedings if the feels like the election isn't going his way.
He's a pig. A rapist pig, a stupid pig, and a dangerous pig.
I wonder will Trump congratulate Putin on his overwhelming 88%+ election win ????
And soon he's going to go, wee wee wee all the way home.
I imagine, the National parks and the FBI and various other organisations will be on red alert on election day.
Actually both candidates probably will, but thats not uncommon for men of their age.
Explains trumps adult diapers
"Congratulation to Vladamir Putin on what will be the second largest vote besides my tremendously largest hugest vote ever in November 2024" :D
"Do not congratulate.... Do not congratulate..."
Well Now
'I believe [our elections] are democratic, whereas in some other countries, like the US, can you consider them to be democratic when one side is using the justice machine to attack one of the candidates'
Putin responds to a question about democracy
What is that "sensitive content" "change settings" shi on that twitter feed? Are those setting determined by X or by Sky News?
Who moderates Sky News comments on X ? Is it X?
I don't trust that platform or its moderation policy (if it has one)
Don't often see examples of projection and irony at the same time
Well we definitely now know whose Putins man in the US after that comment & who it favours
You mean he was lying before (and not now)?
I was just being rhetorical....
Donald will be shouting about this to the DoJ before the week is out, even Putin/Russia supports me.
Dementia Don’s handmaidens once again trying to interpret what dear leader was having a fever dream about
I don't think that was ever in question.
Same as trumps online fans and their statements regarding Ukraine.
There's enough of Trump saying terrible things without having to bend the truth. If you watch the full clip, it is quite obvious he's referring to a 'bloodbath' in the car industry. This just galvanises Trump and his supporters, because they can point to this and shout "FAKE NEWS" and it's actually true. Infuriating and a it of an own goal imo.
Yeah the guy saying Hillary used acid that destroys everything in a 10 mile radius to delete files off her server is real upset when it’s on the other foot. Sucks. Mad?
”She used all sorts of acid testing and everything else they call it, BleachBit, but it’s essentially acid that will destroy everything within 10 miles. I mean, what she did was unbelievable.”
He can package it how he wants but we know what Trump wants and it’s violence.
Just been watching this, and you'd think you'd be numb to it at this stage, but this guy is up on stage being introduced as the "very unfairly treated President Trump" and then saluting people being convicted of crimes over January 6th. I just cannot for the life of me understand how this guy is a political candidate. Is this where society is now? That this sort of individual is accepted and lauded by people as an example for them and for their kids? It's extremely concerning and seems to be getting worse and worse by the day.
Yeah but TFG will stay at rear, as the bone spurs won't allow him to get near the action!
So obvious that Trump had to send a spokesman out to clarify the remarks!
"Is this where society is now?"
Basically, yes. Looking at it a bit more closely, there are a few things going on, here. Big chunks of the population here throughout the West have never seen their living standards recover since the 2008 recession and that's on top of local industry having been gutted since the mid 20th century. In short, austerity has created a reservoir of anger that's ripe for populists to tap into. It's an anger the political centre has been unable to, or refused to, deal with in a real and effective manner, pushing people toward political extremism. It's something we've seen happen before.
At the same time, people have never had easier access to information, but by the same token have never had easier access to misinformation and disinformation which, conveniently enough, caters very specifically to their pre-existing biases and prejudices.
Capitalism has a bit of a role to play, here, as well. News networks in the states and throughout the world have bombarded us with a 24 hour news cycle and social media sites have an insatiable thirst for clicks. Chatter about Trump's insanity is so constant that it has become normalised. If we were still in the world of newspapers and nightly news bulletins, reports of him being under federal indictments would carry far more weight. Now, it's just an afterthought.
In a way, we kind of did this to ourselves, but we didn't know what we were doing at the time.
