Why wouldn't he? You are only as good as your last game and the same applies to management. If you don't deliver you go simple as.
and how did Schmidt finally get the bullet.
Certainly not after losing something like 2 out of 20 games and still winning the 6Ns
I genuinely can't remember but I think Joe opted to leave rather getting the bullet
He isn’t an infallible God like some here would have you believe. A Grand Slam last year against weak opposition followed by a shat the bed World Cup wasn’t that impressive tbf
Some of the takes on here make NiallOf9/Starkid look balanced.
Only the longer term forum posters will get that one ... Rather than those who come out of the woodwork whenever there's an L in the Form Column.
You're only as good as the game you lost with an 80th minute drop goal? Unless it was Portugal we were playing that's not going to lead to anything.
lucky for you I can remember. Schmidt was hailed as the second coming but Schmidt in both world cups was a failure because he did not build a squad for the world cups. Farrell did the same last year and I had hoped he would learn but I don’t think he has.
South Africa New Zealand Australia Argentina France England want to win the World Cup, that’s the one and only prize. Nothing else matters. That’s the reality.
under Schmidt and Farrell we get to a World Cup and a couple of injuries and some poor form and we are done. Because we have never built towards a World Cup
if Ireland win the 6 nations today it’s still a failure because the slam was there for the taking and they blew it, Lose today and the knives will be out for Farrell.
I am disappointed he has not started to develop props, 9, 10, 15, back row. Where we are at our weakest. It’s makes no sense to me.
the whole country wants to make a semi final at a World Cup, that means age and injury profiling and building depth and picking a captain who will be at the World Cup and in their prime,
Farrell needs to start moving or he will be a failure in 2027
Our starting 10 is 24 years old. Casey, our next 9, is 24 years old with fourteen caps. Sam Prendergast is the fourth choice Leinster outhalf and has been called in as a development player off pure potential.
Ahern was a training squad player this 6N. Prendergast eile is 24 years old with much history in Farrell's squads.
Frawley and Jimmy O'Brien aren't exactly old options at 15 - both brought in under Farrell.
The only reason we haven't developed props is a lack of options. Boyle is about the only young prop in Ireland who looks like he has international potential.
this might help
Casey not on bench
ahern and Pendergasts not on bench
fair enough frawley jimmy O’Brien injured
props to develop need game time or is the plan to play porter and furlong for 80 minutes every big game
Indo reporting that POM is considering retiring from test rugby after the Scotland game.
This isn't soccer and losing 2 games by a total of 4 or 5 points against England and New Zealand is hardly cause for concern.
Furlong and Porter don't play 80 minutes though, so that's a ridiculous statement.
Seriously does it ever end with people complaining about development.
Props get development at the provinces. H Byrne is the "old" replacement 10 at 24 on the bench.
When has Furlong played 80 minutes? Furlong was out of a lot of last 6 nations and players came in. THose players are still available.
Oh lets talk about the World Cup again :-) the competition is in 3 years time.
Let win some more 6 nations and we can worry about the World Cup when it comes around, Im sure plenty will be available to jump on everyone if they win or lose. Such is life
Winning a 6 nations is never a failure. Such a stupid stupid comment
Winning the greatest rugby tournament is a failure? The RWC is grand but the 6N is our bread and butter and we've rarely won it, nevermind back to back.
judging by the latest picture ryan will be away for a few weeks injured
Which very much reads as Joe deciding to step away, rather than him "getting the bullet"
That's a brilliant system. Why doesn't every sporting team take this approach?
Basically you must win every single game. Forever. Get beaten...you're gone. No if's, buts or maybes. Out you go. Next please.
Why is everyone responding to this nonsense? It goes nowhere and gets there quickly.
Schmidt was never staying on after the RWC, whether we won it or lost all our games, he was leaving
Somehow this about one of our great back rows getting overlooked. I hope its on his own terms
Probably the right time from all sides. Hopefully we can give him one last great day and he gets to lift the trophy in front of a full crowd.
Thornley hinted at this as well.
So because these players aren't playing in the 6N decider, a single match, Farrell is therefore not developing them?
That's an interesting take
I'll never not find it amusing when someone who clearly know's diddily squat about rugby create an account and start blabbing utter tosh as soon as Ireland lose a game... stick to GAA!
Actually I think there is a fair bit of sense to what the poster is saying.............Farrell has made some absolute clangers in my opinion this six nations. Making POM captain was totally the wrong call as POM was clearly under severe pressure in the back row from the likes of Baird and Conan etc. Keeping Murray involved also a huge mistake I think. 6-2 was a mistake v England and having POM on the pitch at 60 plus mins in that game was beyond bizarre. Should have been off at 40/45 mins. Leaving Ringers out entirely also a clanger, he is the best 13 in the world as far as I can see and incredibly important to our defensive operation even if he was out.
These are all big big mistakes and he needs to be questioned about it. No we don't have to go all kneejerk on it and fire the coach but these are serious mistakes and copy book is well blotted. How he responds will be interesting. I hope it's a core part of his development as Ireland coach leading up to 2027 but if mistake continue I fear we may be no better off in 2027.
The fact you even mention firing the coach, in a year we most likely with the Championship, is absolutely hilarious.
I am glad you find it hilarious. Do I think he should be fired of course not but recognising mistakes is vital. Let's hope it's all taken on board and lessons learn but copybook has been blotted. He either learns and improves or mistakes will continue and if we are serious about being as good as we can be you can't make mistakes of substance at this level. The mistakes Farrell has made this 6 nations I think are concerning and of a substantial nature.
Nevermind
Clangers? That's a bit (or indeed a lot) excessive.
First obvious thing to point out is that we will potentially end this 6N with only one last second drop goal loss away to England.
Secondly, he is clearly cultivating Doris as the captain following POM and generally had no problem taking POM off. He had been having a decent 6N prior to the England game.
Murray was a choice to play a certain type of game off the bench. I understood the logic and he would have brought a stability that Casey perhaps would not. I think it was a mistake in hindsight, but I'd hardly call it a clanger.
The 6-2 worked quite well against France. He would have known the risk of losing two back 3 players, and well we just got unlucky. It happens, but that is very much outcome based thinking. And I don't like the 6-2 for what it's worth, but I understand the logic behind it.
Ringrose was only just back from injury.
There are issues to look at, as always, but there is zero sense to anything that poster is saying because any suggestion that Farrell is under pressure is pretty farcical.
That means he is either retiring or leaving Munster?
