Jesus , modern life is **** enough , let people have things that make them feel slightly better, even if yes its slightly unhealthy .
My return experiences, attempted twice, of bringing bags of 20+ cans (all of which had deposits paid, albeit some had no logo, and were purchased after 1st feb) showed over 75% being rejected for invalid barcode.
Therefore, my cans will continue to go in the green bin and I've switched to buying glass bottles for beer and 5Ls (instead of 2Ls) of water. Glass bottles that go in the black bin.
Why dont you bring your own bottle of orange?
You're supposed to stop them to robbing you by withdrawing your custom.
There is old stock still being sold without the logo. We're in the changeover phase, all cans/bottles will have the R logo on them from 1st June.
There is still alot of products not in scope in circulation. If they are only collecting 5m containers a week by June it would be a failure but its still only 6 weeks in.
I guess no-one really has a handle on the how quickly a return should happen/how quickly a product is consumed.
Like my instincts (based on almost no evidence) would be that a single purchase of a 500ml bottle of Coke Zero should be consumed quickly, but a 2L bottle of Coke Zero may take longer. A slab (either beer or soft-drink) may be something that people store for a few weeks before using, so the 18 or 24 cans in this may skew the return figure downwards.
And we don't really know yet what peoples plans are re the point at which they'll return. Like will they wait until they have 10 items (or 20, 50 or 100 items) before returning?
So I think there is going to be a 'lag' for a few months before we get reliable figures.
re-turn on the tv this morning boasting 5 million items returned so far, if I google there is 5 million containers a day used (according to return) so its not very successful.
surely the return rate should be much higher after a month ?
oops sorry gehghis just read your post ! totally agree with the post.
Short circuit the system by stopping buying them.
Is there a Mr Price near you? Earlier on the thread it was mentioned they would do manual returns.
Machines can still take them without the logo. Have you tried the bottles in a machine or you could try the putting barcode checker here to see if they will be accepted.
Re-turn are on the news this morning saying 5m items have been returned.
As before, the media report this without any context, so that people believe that a big number means this is now working.
Let me put some context on this, because 5m items to date is *not* actually the sign of success re-turn want us to believe.
1. Re-turn previously told us that c. 2m items were returned in February.
2. Today they say the number has passed 5m items. Let's suppose that means that over the first 10 days of March 3m items have been returned, or 300k per day.
3. In Ireland, 5m in scope items are sold per day. Some of these are non logo still but I checked last week with a supermarket and up to 80% of items then were on sale with deposit added.
4. At up to 4m items (with deposit paid) per day, 300k returns is a ratio of just 7.5%. A long way from 90% target or c. 65% kerbside return rate.
5. Turning to the machines. Just under 2,200 machines are now live, meaning each machine on average is taking back 136 items. By the governments own measure, a low volume machine is 684 a day (250k p.a. or less is grant-aided). Again a long way short of the lowest expected volume.
6. Based on 136 unit volume, each machine is earning €2.99 a day for the retailer.
7. Finally, Ciaran Foley told Claire Byrne that Saturday / Sunday 2/3 March had 350k returns. I would expect it to have risen from there, but 300k is not a rise.
We have now had 6 shopping weekends, it seems likely to me that engagement is worryingly low.
I am on my phone so can't link everything here but I've sources for everything and happy to hear any feedback on my calls and conclusions.
Oh we know all about Ossian round these parts. Here he is laughing it up with his pals Tony and Ciaran launching this shambles:
This cant be posted enough. Irish politics in microcosm.
Don't forget to direct all your complaints to Ossian Smyth minister for far away bottle machines and nuisances, the green party minister that launched this disaster.

tbf, it's night and day when comparing sugary ones to zero calorie ones. the latter have miniscule negative health affects unless you're drinking insane amounts, and the former can probably be still be enjoyed in enough of a healthy moderation that the scheme still be a pain in the hole.
Sorry, didn’t see original post

Hi,
it’s possibly a great scheme to get rid of waste bottles and cans but can we ban charity collectors from waving buckets in your face when using the system. I was at three recycling depots recently, one was fine, the other two had charity collectors so much in the way that I had to ask them to move to enable me to put bottles in the unit. I was asked for the refund tickets, which I said no to as I was recycling for elderly neighbour. As she said it’s her Easter eggs for her grandchildren, I had to say no several times. It is annoying
While they are behind the 20 other people queueing up for balloons...feck that
she clearly has'nt met me then!.... yet ;)
What was her reaction, i know you said, but i mean was it a good one? like something in amazement? or was disgusted by it? what kind of tone is what i'm wondering.
Also regarding the 30 cans, it sounds like that machine was a good one. Usually sometimes the cans more often than not fail for me after every 3-5 cans which can be annoying when attempting to get a specific number all on one deposit receipt.
I used it over the weekend and had 30 cans which took no time at all to scan and all worked first time. The girl at the till said it was the largest receipt she had seen so far at EUR4.50!
The skips inside the machine which receive the cans will need regular washing.
The blue mini wheel bins that are used behind bars in pubs get stinky too if they are not washed out.
Up at Aldi in Belgard again today. Both machines working, everything accepted without issue but the place absolutely stank of stale beer. God knows what the summer will bring.
Same as that. 18km to my nearest RVM. Farcical.
There are thousands more like you. Unfortunately despite being called Green, the Green party have completely forgotten about people in Rural areas.
