They have
I could understand not wanting another market in an area held up with that SuperValue and Abtran on the same 100m stretch
There is an Aldi just down the road.
But this new objection just shows that it is pure NIMBY
It's not as if that area is of particular beauty. Clover Hill is pretty much an infill estate with light industrial development on most sides and former council houses on the other. There aren't any views to be blocked or impacted.
Initial works begin at Cork city site with over 600 apartments, gym, cafés and more planned
wow, that's a large development. I know it shouldn't bother me but these artists impressions bug me. Lovely sunshine, sparsely populated roads and this one has gone full eco-aware with daisies and buttercups in the common green area around said apartments.
Would you prefer an artists impression with a few burnt out cars and ponies running around?
Buildings are rather boring grey cubes.
reality would be nice
This view - southerly - is certainly eye-catching!
Perhaps it was silly of me to expect them to give a damn about maintaining our main shopping street.
That is spectularly bad!
Is that person stupid or are they willfully being obtuse!
simply doing anything bar answer the question that was asked. More mindless ideas, installing stuff and not maintaining them. It's as if the council got distracted by other shiny new things (robot trees 🤔)
I know it's not the point but those lights are the ugliest.
Still ridiculous that they install them and then fail to maintain them.
They weren't so bad at the initial installation. I reckon they could simply be cleaned up to make them a lot better.
Which are filthy
Many, many more examples of this. He consistently tells me he's "at a loss" to understand my emails when I let him know I'm looking for (a) accountability or (b) for him to perhaps do his literal job, i.e not just ignore a complaint.
I did an overnight trip to Cork before Christmas. While waiting to meet friends to finish work I took a walk around the city and was sad to see the state of parts of it. Couldn't believe how rundown and dirty parts of it had gotten since I left 7 years ago. Washington St was just filty. The bus stops etc could do with a good powerwashing. A cleaning some greenery would go a long way.For a city I loved it was sad to see
I'm actually surprised someone bothered to answer you at all!
Most new things around the city are overly expensive, overrated, ugly, not maintained, not fit for use or all of the above. Robot "trees", paving, ugly light fixtures, street furniture etc etc.
you hit the nail on the head with one word.....accountability (or the lack of it in public services)
Remove/reduce traffic and it would be worthwhile
And I feel it’s not crazy to say in other European cities, especially ones considerably poorer than us, the norm would be the clean part. When I was in Krakow in Poland at Easter they cleaned the streets at least twice a day. It was spotless
Your reddit thread is extremely telling. There is a sizeable minority who are perplexed as to why anyone would think the council should fix the lights. You can see the attitude that permeates the council.
Exact in a lot of European cities they take pride in the "old town" Cork have just left it go down hill. Even outside the bemish site it's just grey. Some greenery wouldn't go amiss there to brighten the place
Corporate Affairs don't care either, despite the CCC website stating complaints are to be sent to them... Ridiculous.
It's almost Orwellian!
Examiner article out today is quite telling anyway. They will be forced to act eventually. Will be submitting to Ombudsman as a matter of principle.
They are utterly useless.
Using the word decorative is deliberate, I assume. There is, one would guess, no health and safety requirements for decorative lighting. Whether it’s nice or not is subjective. So technically they have done their job
The responses were appalling!
The question was very clearly; what do you plan to do with all the non functional light features on the street?
Answering repeatedly that; there's sufficient lighting on the street; is extremely and obviously evasive and not up to the standard of response I think the public deserve from their public servants. It is cynical and arrogant, imo.
The plans for Bishop Lucey park are awful, hardly any bit of green in it.
There's a lot of potential in the (remaining) old buildings they haven't got around to pulling down and shoving up the ubiquitous glass box.
Can't imagine a tourist wanting to visit to see the world famous Glass Boxes of Cork.
Umm why did ye put them in in the first place? For a laugh?
you should directly email the Chief Exec and include the full email chain, if no joy from there then you should try one of the councillors for the ward. They'd only be delighted with the chance for pre-election PR.
