Second week of this nonsense for me. 3 cans refused to scan, so I kept removing them and retrying -
It's officially a pain in the hole now.
A lady was at the machine next to me and a man was waiting for us to finish. We had a grand aul moan about it. I used my voucher at the till which was then duly torn in 2 and chucked in the bin under the till.
Tune in next week for the latest exciting update. 🙄
Hardly surprising. The producer has to pay a fee for each item they put on the market. If producers costs go up they put their prices up. Anyone, including Re-turn, who argue this scheme is cost neutral is living in a fantasy world.
I know that this has been mentioned on thread before but some producers and retailers are definetly using this to bring in some significant price rises. There's very few drinks I buy but was in a Centra today and spotted that bottles of lucozade zero (which had a 2 euro price stamped on its packaging a few short months ago now has 2.20 on the packagine + 15 cent DRS deposit.
So a ten percent price rise and a 7 percent deposit to be paid.
There's definetly people make money from this scheme and using it as a reason to increase prices - I suppose this has been identified already.
Hmmm, normally I'd agree but isn't that outa the Catherine Martin playbook these days. Sending letters is all well & good, chances are they'll end up in the bin, hopefully a recycling bin.
But if you want results these days, hitting the social media is a lot more effective. And of course, why the state would like to limit the public expressing their forthright opinions on same.
I have found from past experience that complaints in writing are more effective.
They also provide you with a written trail of what has been exchanged.
The first salvo might not do the job and you might have to go further.
I have never lodged a complaint with Re-turn so I can't gauge exactly what their response would be.
But I note @bogmaster has had some success already today albeit with a different issue.
Well you advised them to file a complaint.
I'm asking you how does that get their deposit back?
You're the one implying other people are lying about bins on the internet.
That's totally misrepresenting what the article says:
Some products are expected to vanish off shop and off-licence shelves, with smaller international companies signalling an unwillingness to pay for Re-turn deposit recycling labels.
Your post mentioned LIDL, Coca Cola, Fanta and Tropicana. They are not smaller international companies \ brands and clearly was not the type of companies Mr Jennings was referring to.
threadbanned
Everything else aside, it's bizarre to implement a new paper-based voucher system these days. Even Dublin Bus moved on from this sort of silliness a decade ago. Contactless and self-service accounts for almost all sales now and shops have adapted greatly for this, so it should have been requirement number 1 to seamlessly and instantly have deposits returned and not to affect commerce.
You need to get a life. Or a hobby. Or both.
You're the one who started complaining about bins on the Internet. 🤣🤣
Pretty fast response, "this is not allowed".
Requested name of supermarket and duly sent.
I was in the centre on Monday, and took specific note of the lack of bins beside the RVMs, as I passed them. That's why I made a post about it. I don't make this stuff up for **** and giggles.
The point has already been made that the bins in the carpark and on the other level of the centre are general waste bins. They are not meant for the disposal of rejected recyclables.
The whole point of the RVM scheme is supposed to increase recycling rates. It is not to have people disposing of their rejected recyclables in general waste bins, but you seem to think that's okay. In fact, you keep doubling down on it. "no matter what you think they are for they're there"
I can't put it any simplier that that, and I am not a liar. I'm not invested enough to make up lies about bins.
That is the last I have to say to you on this matter.
Some podcasts and news articles linked earlier in the thread such as this one
https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/why-the-new-deposit-re-turn-scheme-could-see-your-favourite-products-vanish-from-the-shelves/a1302991357.html
Mr Jennings said: “It has to be acknowledged that Ireland is a small market and expecting some companies to alter because little old Ireland wants to do something different doesn’t always work.”
One week later sign is still up. Emailing ReTurn now.
They must have removed that whole bin to empty it on Monday. Let's face it, you're complaining for the sake of it in this instance. Comments like wander around looking for a bin, FFS you can't walk through Citywest SC without passing a bin. I mean, unless you are pitching a tent and living beside the machine you have to pass bins to leave the place, no matter what you think they are for they're there.
The producers pay, not retailers.
I didn't advise phoning.
If it was me I'd do it by email.
What would you do.
Why did you advise ringing re-turn so?
What did you hope would happen?
I didn't say anything about someone collecting the bottles and giving them money.
You said that.
If you feel sorry for them, why waste their time further?
Unless of course you think re-turn are going to send someone out to collect their bottles and issue their refund, do you?
I just felt sorry for the pensioner who lost €1.
If they just dispose of the bottles and do nothing they'll never see the money again.
What advice would you give them ?
What I said was there were no bin beside the RVMs last Monday. And there wasn't. Please don't continue to imply that I am a liar.
It seems to me like you're the one getting your knickers in a twist, here.
A designated bin marked for rejected recyclables at each RVM and separate from general waste bins, seems like a no brainer to me, but clearly not to everyone.
They're bins and they're available to use when you said they weren't, I'm not sure what more you want to be honest. As I say, you can get your kickers in a twist about them if you want but they're there and available for people to use.
Well, that bin outside the door in the carpark is a general waste bin and has been there for a long time, I've used that one myself plenty of times. It's not a recycling bin.
As for other bins around the centre they are also general waste bins. Again, I thought the whole purpose of the scheme was to prevent recyclables going into general waste? Kind of defeats the purpose if people are not putting their recyclables into their green bins at home, and bringing them to rvm's only to end up dumping them int general waste bins in shopping centres.
I also don't appreciate you implying that I'm a liar, but there was no bin (general waste or otherwise) beside those RVMs on Monday last.
Who told you that?
We have lots of people who "don't want to" have to deal with the Re-turn system, but go along with it because otherwise they will lose out on money. So why would any company "want to" put the Re-turn logo on their products otherwise?
It was there on Saturday because I put something in it and is there now. No one has to wander anywhere, there's one 2 foot from the machine and you have to pass other bins to leave through the shopping centre or through the car park. Do you want a personalised waste disposal team to follow you around?
The other one is right there, I suppose that went missing on Monday too.
Edit: re the size. It was being emptied when I passed it at 8:40ish this morning so it's not like they're letting it get full. I took that photo on the way into dunnes and it was being emptied when I was on my way out 10 minutes later.
There's plenty of things to complain about with this system. The set up and lack of bins in Citywest SC is no not one of them.
That wasn't there on Monday when I was there.
And now you expect people to wander around looking for another bin? ( I thought the whole point of the scheme to stop plastics from going into general waste bins.)
Plus, if they think that tiny thing is fit for purpose, it's pathetic. It's already overflowing.
In lidl this morning and noticed cans and bottles of coke, fanta and their own brand orange juice all carry the deposit and the re-turn logo. Including multi-packs. Ordered a McDonalds breakfast on Wednesday and the small tropicana bottles have the logo on them as well
Yet we get told multinationals don't want to put the logo on it because we are such a small nation... Curious that...
Anyone in that person's situation should retain the bottles and the purchase receipt and lodge a complaint with Re-turn.
What do you think they are going to do about it?
Send someone out to that persons house to collect the bottles and issue their deposit back? 😂
