Post below from earlier in the thread from someone who worked sorting it...
€1m per day will be collected in deposits once we get to 1 June and all pre DRS bottles and cans are sold through.
How much of that is redeemed? We will find that out at some time the collection ratio but I suspect it will only be when the ratio looks half decent, i.e. we could easily be waiting until next year. It will be proclaimed a huge success, of course, whatever % it is, and be reported as such without challenge.
No need to mention the 90% thing for a few years, even 60% will be declared an early win for everyone.
Who gets the unclaimed deposit return monies, I assumed the government?
Even worse, a private company owned by the retail industry: Deposit Return Scheme Ireland Company Limited.
I wonder who is behind or involved in it, a Coveney perhaps they seem to have fingers in pies everywhere 😉
No Coveneys on the list of directors when the company was set up anyway, seems to be mostly representatives from the likes of Coca Cola, Pepsico, Musgraves, Tesco etc. and a few consultant types.
I haven't been able to deposit one of can or bottle yet. What's the story at all, I've just seen bags dumped by these machines or people taking a bag of cans up to them, scanning a few that don't get accepted and then returning to their cars again with the same full bag.
As an Irishman living in Sweden 15 years I can tell you this recycling gets old fast. Sure some people do it but the majority (myself included) don't bother. When the kids were young they were happy to drag bags of cans into stores and recycle for a few quid. Am I going to stand there emptying a black bag full of 3 month old stale beer cans at 1kr a can? It's into the bin with the empty wine bottles and everything else.
Sweden has a DRS return rate of just under 90 per cent. so clearly most do bother.
Its right beside it. Theres another one about 10 paces away at the door when you come in and another one at the top of the lift.
Anyone in that person's situation should retain the bottles and the purchase receipt and lodge a complaint with Re-turn.
What do you think they are going to do about it?
Send someone out to that persons house to collect the bottles and issue their deposit back? 😂
In lidl this morning and noticed cans and bottles of coke, fanta and their own brand orange juice all carry the deposit and the re-turn logo. Including multi-packs. Ordered a McDonalds breakfast on Wednesday and the small tropicana bottles have the logo on them as well
Yet we get told multinationals don't want to put the logo on it because we are such a small nation... Curious that...
That wasn't there on Monday when I was there.
And now you expect people to wander around looking for another bin? ( I thought the whole point of the scheme to stop plastics from going into general waste bins.)
Plus, if they think that tiny thing is fit for purpose, it's pathetic. It's already overflowing.
It was there on Saturday because I put something in it and is there now. No one has to wander anywhere, there's one 2 foot from the machine and you have to pass other bins to leave through the shopping centre or through the car park. Do you want a personalised waste disposal team to follow you around?
The other one is right there, I suppose that went missing on Monday too.
Edit: re the size. It was being emptied when I passed it at 8:40ish this morning so it's not like they're letting it get full. I took that photo on the way into dunnes and it was being emptied when I was on my way out 10 minutes later.
There's plenty of things to complain about with this system. The set up and lack of bins in Citywest SC is no not one of them.
Who told you that?
We have lots of people who "don't want to" have to deal with the Re-turn system, but go along with it because otherwise they will lose out on money. So why would any company "want to" put the Re-turn logo on their products otherwise?
Well, that bin outside the door in the carpark is a general waste bin and has been there for a long time, I've used that one myself plenty of times. It's not a recycling bin.
As for other bins around the centre they are also general waste bins. Again, I thought the whole purpose of the scheme was to prevent recyclables going into general waste? Kind of defeats the purpose if people are not putting their recyclables into their green bins at home, and bringing them to rvm's only to end up dumping them int general waste bins in shopping centres.
I also don't appreciate you implying that I'm a liar, but there was no bin (general waste or otherwise) beside those RVMs on Monday last.
They're bins and they're available to use when you said they weren't, I'm not sure what more you want to be honest. As I say, you can get your kickers in a twist about them if you want but they're there and available for people to use.
What I said was there were no bin beside the RVMs last Monday. And there wasn't. Please don't continue to imply that I am a liar.
It seems to me like you're the one getting your knickers in a twist, here.
A designated bin marked for rejected recyclables at each RVM and separate from general waste bins, seems like a no brainer to me, but clearly not to everyone.
I just felt sorry for the pensioner who lost €1.
If they just dispose of the bottles and do nothing they'll never see the money again.
What advice would you give them ?
If you feel sorry for them, why waste their time further?
Unless of course you think re-turn are going to send someone out to collect their bottles and issue their refund, do you?
I didn't say anything about someone collecting the bottles and giving them money.
You said that.
Why did you advise ringing re-turn so?
What did you hope would happen?
I didn't advise phoning.
If it was me I'd do it by email.
What would you do.
The producers pay, not retailers.
They must have removed that whole bin to empty it on Monday. Let's face it, you're complaining for the sake of it in this instance. Comments like wander around looking for a bin, FFS you can't walk through Citywest SC without passing a bin. I mean, unless you are pitching a tent and living beside the machine you have to pass bins to leave the place, no matter what you think they are for they're there.
One week later sign is still up. Emailing ReTurn now.
Some podcasts and news articles linked earlier in the thread such as this one

Mr Jennings said: “It has to be acknowledged that Ireland is a small market and expecting some companies to alter because little old Ireland wants to do something different doesn’t always work.”
You need to get a life. Or a hobby. Or both.
I was in the centre on Monday, and took specific note of the lack of bins beside the RVMs, as I passed them. That's why I made a post about it. I don't make this stuff up for **** and giggles.
The point has already been made that the bins in the carpark and on the other level of the centre are general waste bins. They are not meant for the disposal of rejected recyclables.
The whole point of the RVM scheme is supposed to increase recycling rates. It is not to have people disposing of their rejected recyclables in general waste bins, but you seem to think that's okay. In fact, you keep doubling down on it. "no matter what you think they are for they're there"
I can't put it any simplier that that, and I am not a liar. I'm not invested enough to make up lies about bins.
That is the last I have to say to you on this matter.
Pretty fast response, "this is not allowed".
Requested name of supermarket and duly sent.
You're the one who started complaining about bins on the Internet. 🤣🤣
