You can't just go up. The top tier is always set back even in the steepest of stadiums.
It would also need a whole second set of turnstiles and congregation areas. Capacity is also dictated by safe levels of exit/entry and dispersal.
Agree. It just isn't feasible. Casement is well hemmed in too. Wouldn't fancy living in those houses during the build, whatever about match/event days
I'm not a fan of his but hard to disagree with Murphy here.
I know pitches are different dimensions for the respective games, but its farcical that in Galway for instance you've Pearse Stadium which maybe gets filled once every 5 years for a Connacht Final, money being spent on redeveloping the Sportsground and Terryland Park not big enough for Galway United these days.
One high quality stadium should serve them all.

Small simple design, roofed stands & makes for a great atmosphere.

The likes of Ravenhill and Parc Y Scarlets are perfect templates for the vast majority of counties.
As usual it's all self deprecating doom and gloom from the GAA side. The GAA are forever getting whipped for their stadiums but he fails to mention that Munster who apparently are the only people can bring a crowd to PuC can barely half fill Thomond Park most weeks.
We done the soccer here in Thomond Park and it was a disaster. Galway would be absolutely lost in a ground for a GAA team. The entire opening round League of Ireland attendance will be beat in 1 game when Limerick go down to Cork in the Munster championships.
And is Terryland really selling out all the time to the point Galway have outgrown it as you say ?
It's always the GAAs fault but how many rugby and soccer teams share. Do Connacht actually want to move Grounds ?
I'm sure no one wishes to move grounds, they would all of course love to renovate and extend their existing grounds, presumably with a fistful of Government funding.
The crux of the article is that this is generally not a good use of funds, there is a consistent lack of joined up thinking regarding sporting infrastructure in this country, all association (not just the GAA) are to blame for this, everyone wants their cake & eat it.
The likes of Australia has no problem having high quality stadiums hosting both rugby codes, AFL & cricket, investing in 1 stadium versus 3 (as Galway has in the example given) is going to be a better ROI.
The GAA built for maximum attendance as opposed to optimal attendance, and that's a valid criticism - there are a plethora of 25k stadia that are full maybe once a year. While you have other counties - Meath & Kildare spring to mind, that are playing in decrepit stadia.
If Galway had a copy of Ravenhill that hosted the 3 teams we'd be far better off as a county.

Surely they are not as far off as casement is! I'm not sure about Windsor Park but how far off is PuC? If the will was there, what is it missing that couldn't be fixed between now and the Euros (hypothetically speaking)?
Galway is the only place where the needs of multiple sports align to mean a shared stadium could work. Nowhere else has this.
The dog track should be relocated to the race track, then you could get a GAA sized pitch at the Sportsground. Have two modular stands at either end of the rugby pitch which get moved back to facilitate GAA during the summer, fill in around the perimeter with temporary stands when needed.
This conversation was already done to death on this thread and people who can explain it better than me explain it a few pages back. Euros in Cork just isn't happening.
Same goes for the ground sharing conversation. In the end we found only a small few stadiums where it would work. Soccer is generally too small and rugby non existent.
What is the average attendance at Connaught rugby matches is it much higher or lower than attendance at Alliance Football and hurling matches. Also you have to cater for GAA County finals and other club mat h which draw attendance which are often as high as attendances at other sports higher level matches
What do the FAI get out of hosting dutys? Is there an extra payment from UEFA as they will have to split the income from the Games in lansdowne with the IRFU
Galway GAA would retain Pearse Stadium for club and smaller intercounty games. They could knock the terraces behind the goals and use that space for something else, they wouldn't need the capacity.
Why would you go knocking terraces. What exactly would the space be used for ?
If it ever happened it would almost certainly be Connacht moving to a redeveloped Salthill.
Construction of a new stand at the Sportsground with facilities far superior to those in Pearse is going to start this summer. It makes sense to utilise that stadium, it is also better located.
Yes but in the hypothetical situation based on the article that stand wouldn't have been funded. If the government were to choose 1 stadium as is right now then it would have been Pearse.
The Sportsground new stand has been in planning and design for many years. The government committed to providing funding for it several years ago and recently upped their contribution. In a hypothetical situation where Pearse Stadium was competing for funding instead, you can speculate that it would have been funded instead but there is nothing to support that. Connacht Rugby and the greyhound crew were committed to the Sportsground so it would have had the multi sport aspect.
Again I'm just going by the article which is working back to a time before the Sportsgrounds got funding.

It wouldn’t be possible to use as a GAA pitch without removing the greyhound track which the owners obviously wouldn’t be agreeable to. For now it definitely is better located but that will change if the N6 ring road ever gets the go ahead.
Looks like the new President is not in favour of giving extra funds to casement.

A delegation from the organisers of the Euro 2028 football tournament is expected to arrive in Belfast on Tuesday, ahead of a visit to Casement Park.
The venue in west Belfast is earmarked to host games at the tournament in four years.
But the stadium has yet to be redeveloped.
The deadline to complete the construction is mid-2027.
It's going to be tight to have the stadium ready for mid 27 even if construction started now. They'd better have work well under way next time the UEFA lads arrive or they'll pull the plug on Casement hosting games for Euro28.
Will be interesting to see if they are also spotted on a clandestine trip to an English city not associated with the Euros in the near future.

If Casement isn't under construction by the end of the year, then it'll have missed Euro28 and the project will be dead. If that's the case, the GAA should put the £15m they allocated Casement towards a new main stand in STP. That and a few other minor upgrades and it would be a very good stadium.
Easy to laugh, but the end of the UF will cause real difficulty for business and life in Clones.
