I see Cillian is 5th in the poll on the blog, maybe I need to watch it back but I thought he was v poor yesterday - first time I've ever thought that he's really struggled for us like that.
Agree with all of that.
The reality is that Mayo are no better equipped to beat Dublin or Kerry at the knockout stages than they have been in the last two years.
Yea, and with games v Roscommon and Monaghan coming up that they should be targeting to win they could very easily find themselves in the final.
So we are still third …..
It can't be very enjoyable being a mayo forward waiting for a ball in. You'd imagine a lot of Mayo defenders and midfielders would love to see forwards like Tommy and Ryan ahead of them and would try and find them as soon as possible. Instead we are stuck in a safety first slow approach.
That's all grand, but the issue for me is that I'm not seeing any evidence that anything new is being tried from last year or that any young players are really putting up their hand. I'd take the beating and even relegation if it looked like we were working on something or like we were starting to see green shoots re real viable future talent. Realistically, the personnel is going to be the same group who capitulated against Dublin and Cork last year and I'm not sure this group have the skillset nor the strength between the ears to not do the same this year. I don't see anything to suggest that the forward options are improving - comparing the variety of forward play (all clearly coached and worked on) by Dublin last night, it couldn't be more obvious how completely un-creative and under-coached we are in this area.
Also, feel like a broken record saying it, but until we find midfielders who can cleanly field a ball and retain possession from the kickout, we are going nowhere. Any team with a decent midfield will be in with a shout to beat us no matter what so long as this area stays as it is. It's a huge problem going on 3 years now. You can't seriously be hoping to be in contention come business end when you can't win possession from the kick out.
We can say "it's only the league" til the cows come home, but there are lots of the same worrying signs still lingering from last year, and the signs have been there in all games so far, including the ones we won (how we won the Dublin game, I do not know).
Was looking at the Dublin /Kerry game last night , and their movement off the ball in the final 3rd is miles ahead of us.
You can tell they are well coached in all facets of the game.
We on the other hand look lost & out of ideas once we get inside the oppositions 45, and it doesn't help matters when you see potent forwards like Tommy & Ryan who are constantly chasing back 60/70 yards to retrieve possession after a basic move needlessly breaks down before reaching them. They are then no-where to be seen if a counter-attack is on.
Disappointing performance yesterday. Not too bothered with the result but I really don't understand the point of slow lateral build up play that allows opposition players to race back and defend. It makes our task getting scores so much more difficult. Are we that devoid of pace and power that we can't attack more quickly and give our forwards a chance to do something?
It seemed every time we went direct against Dublin we won a free and Tyrone were very liable to foul as well if pressurised.
Mayo was average to poor 1st half and led thanks to a very debatable penalty. 2nd half poor all through and can have no complaints about losing by a bit to spare. Roscommon and Monaghan to play was probably the reason for it but eight changes to the starting 15 was too many for Div 1 game.

Davel32 is now perma banned.
Ohh you think Mattie
played a blinder then is it?
I feel we have a new recruit from the Blog. He made some weird personal comments about Mattie on that as well which I pulled him up on. He was subsequently banned.
I have now received an abusive PM on here as well.
Strange way to spend one’s time but each to their own
Mod Edit
Warning issued.
Let’s hope we are in the middle of heavy training
And sure wasn’t everyone crying for lads to get a chance , and not to go all out for the league and try to finish 3-6th and ideally finish with wins
So here we are
Ideal
Shades of Dublin? Division 2 Cork hit us for 1-6 without reply too
Please God let Matty do the decent thing and **** off
Shades of Dublin last year with another 2nd half collapse ,
1-7 from Tyrone in the 3rd quarter & Mayo had no way to stop it.
I know it didn't make a difference but 8 mins ET was a joke, sure the injury on its own was 7 mins
Poor result, lots to work on.
Tommy was better, Boland good, Coen good and ROD v good when he came on. Callinan did okay but needed more support against Canavan
Prove himself? He got took to the cleaners in 21 by Tyrone, and had played shite since then, was hoping he had fucked off this year
Wouldn't go that far, but a very bad performance for a fella who needs to prove himself again
Midfield is a mess.
Wtf was Ruane at there, 30m out and wouldn't take the shot
James Burke played with ballymun
Tyrone much better now, we're brutal
Hennelly gone into meltdown in the second half 💀
Not great from us so far, Tyrone are v poor so far
I doubt it, Enda Varley maybe?
Really? Not sure who was wishing for Mcstay
