I think most of is sensationalised to push a narrative, at this point the Sun must of contacted every single person who's in the adjustment period as they switch from petrol to EV.
Unfortunately it's just not newsworthy when a person has a uneventful journey and charging experience.
The anti ev articles generate clicks and are being pushed as part of culture war bs. Getting people who usually buy 5 year olds cars irate that in 16 years they'll be forced to buy one of these scary new EVs.
Log into the main facebook page on electric cars and how many of the posts are complaining about charging point in Ireland? which is a tiny country and the range on most cars now is incredible compared to a few years ago
You can complain about Sun, Murdock etc etc. Fact is even the most stance electric car owners spend a significant amoutn of time bit*hing about charging points
The media see that and will auto create articles to get clicks. Also if you check the facbook page you see the same people promoting electric cars constantly sharing these articles and driving clicks to them.
Best to ignore, less clicks means media iwll move on. Some people will say "diesel till I die" etc totally unaware that they have no choice and its up to what the manufacturer sells
If it's sensationalised to push a narrative, people arent stupid to fall for it.
Despite a few problems, there are still a lot of issues for mass EV adoption
One of them is HUGE deprication
Take for example this Taycan - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202401175642059
This is 170k new (not including overs) and has only done 60 miles and is going for 117k
I know there is a new Taycan on the way but you will never see this kind of drop on a ICE vehicle
The bigger issue is who paid £170k and why?
"...The publication found one owner who had been particularly burned by a waning appetite for the luxury SUVs. Bloomberg reports that Tim Coen spent £103,000 on a Range Rover Sport SVR in 2021. Three months ago, a car-trading website valued the SUV at £75,000, while it would now fetch just £45,000...."
Might be also people who still use Facebook complain a lot.
In fairness there a lot of very poorly maintained chargers and daft designed chargers and charging spots.
Public charging is still a real issue. 99% of EV owners rarely public charge but in Dublin the number of public AC chargers has not risen at all to meet demand. ESB ecars have no plans to roll out public AC chargers nor have any of the councils. At peak times motorway and city DC chargers are busy with queues. This is main downside of EV ownership and something that needs to be resolved. It does not impact EV drivers that often but it's the #1 problem and a real world concern on a Friday evening the chargers at motorway services will have 1+ hour queues. At the rate of new chargers being added they will not keep up with demand. Even new sites can take 6+ months after being finished to be actually powered up by ESB networks.
It's fair to pint this out but most articles don't mention all the positive aspects to EV ownership.
Wonder how long before "EVs cause erectile dysfunction" is printed in the tabloids at the rate it's going.
Interesting ad, with disclaimer saying it needs petrol to "never plug in". Still very misleading
I saw an instagram post today from Ashford motors where the sales lady was saying that they won't take any EV cars as trade ins anymore due to market volatility , potential warranty costs etc.
I was wondering if anyone has come across this in other garages?

Pro or anti EV posts are a good way of encouraging engagement (good and bad). As to depreciation there's also a thread for that, the smaller niche garages may want to limit exposure.
This was discussed earlier in the thread.
On todays Newstalk show 6pm, interview with Ashford Motors , who basically said not taking EVS as a trade in , are there other garages doing this
Ashford Motors, a second hand car dealer? They were probably badly burnt on their EV stock when Tesla dropped the price of the Model Y and Model 3 sharply in the last few years. Tough going, but that's the nature of their game. The risk of their trade.
Not taking any EVs as trade in is an understandable knee-jerk reaction, but it will likely have the opposite effect: internal combustion cars are likely to have far greater depreciation over the next number of years as they are slowly becoming extinct and people don't want them no more.
She was on red fm last week, with the same spiel , electric cars are terrible, no range , have to change the batteries, ect ect,
She’s obviously sick of sitting on this overpriced Taycan for several months now. Most of her trade seems to be high margin but high risk performance cars anyway. https://www.donedeal.ie/view/35535525
Oh now I know who you mean. She's not the sharpest tool in the shed from what I gathered in the past.
She is actually selling cars for the public as well. She'll advertise the car and will take a cut of the sales price.
She can't be too bad, she's in business a while now
All high end dealers do this they just won’t openly admit it
I tried to deal with her in the past, I wasn’t impressed and wouldn’t again. She’s all about the Instagram likes
She will be along soon to explain her position
I live beside the N11 Ionity and I never see queues, even at peak times. I think we just need more chargers in more petrol stations. That's the big issue. Ionity is limited to Leinster.
Only one I've ever used was in Tipperary 😉
I can understand small dealers not wanting to sell EVs. There's still a huge perception amongst the public that EVs need to be bought brand new. An incorrect perception in my mind...
With that being said she was on with Ciaran Cuddihy on Newstalk yesterday spouting crap about charging a phone killing a cars range and a new battery costing 20k so I wouldn't go taking what she has to say with any real degree of seriousness
If you are talking about Gorey there are often queues by leafs as only one leaf can fill up at a time. Often the leafs cannot charge as someone else on the ESB charger is using CCS as it's cheaper than ionity. Many sites across Ireland can only charge one car at a time and it takes 30+ minutes so high risk at peak times of queues. I think it's a real issue on longer trips. See feedback on plugshare apps as to queues and options. Gorey in unusual in terms of multiple 50+kW chargers in a nearby town plus ionity at motorway services. Look at the next town up, Arklow, 1 x 50kW for everyone. Some people spend 50k+ on an EV and have a terrible experience on trips away for weekends. It may not get much better soon. That's the real truth, the media like to spin other stories for clicks.
I remember working out how much range you loose when fully charging a phone including transfer losses. Iirc it was about 80metres. You would have to fully charge about 12 phones to reduce your range by 1 km. I must have been bored..😊
Ashford sell high end sports and luxury cars, EV's aren't her market so I find it strange they would interview her on this. Buyers aren't going into her to trade in a ID4 against an RS6 like.
I applaud your dedication to the stats
The more free FUD that can be spread the higher the chance a buyer might just pause and end up shopping with a traditional outfit like hers. There is literally no downside.
