And the plot thickens, if this is true then its a new low for British politics.
That was always going to be a part of it. If this was an easily defeated motion then they would just "defeat" it and not bother with the theatrics.
The whole thing is stupid though and shows that the "mother of all parliaments" needs to cop on and take some advice on how to rule from her progressive children.
So penny Mordaunt’s speech in the commons blaming labour wasn’t exactly true then ? Shock horror, but even still how much of a mess did the speaker make of this that he got the SNP and the tories on the same page ?
I'd well believe STarmer pressured him on this. He has been quite purge happy the last while and Gaza has been prime culling fodder where anyone even thinking of questioning the Israeli government are at massive risk of being branded anti-semites.
Meanwhile, Liz is blaming - among others - "trans activists" for her downfall. Delightful stuff.
Ironic that the Tory faction associated with Liz Truss calls itself the "Popular Conservatives". Based on the opinion polls while she was in office, Liz Truss holds the record for the most unpopular UK Prime Minister of all time.
There is an excellent movie in all this if I can only get Ianucci on board.
It will be a comedy retelling of A Very British Coup where on election night all the lefties and trannies meet up in Compton's in Soho on election night to plot the downfall of Lizzy Perkins.
The real book had shady characters in Soho clubs, a tanking economy and a protagonist friendly with Russia so you could just do a lot of the script word of word like the Airplane movie.
I had assumed that was taken for granted. If they had the votes they would have made a point of voting it down.
People only dodge votes they are going to lose, no one dodges it if they are sure of winning no matter the claimed reasons.
Can't see Hoyle lasting the weekend, will probably be gone by the end of the day.
51 MPs sign motion of no confidence in Commons Speaker
Is there a magic number this motion has to reach?
Nothing formal but got this off sky news
"According to the Institute for Government, there's no formal means of removing the House Speaker from office.
However, they can fall victim to a vote of no confidence - making it extremely difficult, and likely untenable, for them to stick around.
One famous example was during the expenses scandal in 2009, when speaker Michael Martin resigned in anticipation of losing such a vote."
This one wasn't true. It was a non-binding motion so doesn't impact on policy.
Not a particularly good reflection on an MP not to know that when he's voting on the motion
Well, yes.
But it should lead to a GE and result in booting out this dreadful Gov.
Tory behaviour in general over the lifetime of this Parliament is a good enough reason for them to be booted out and for a GE to be called.
Not participating in, and then losing, a non-binding motion in and of itself isn't something for a Govt to fall over.
Yes, those well known trans activists in the.... [checks notes]....Bond Markets!
Last Speaker to not end up causing huge problems for themselves effectively forcing resignation or retirement was Boothroyd.
We've had some issues (O'Donoghue resigning, and currently O Fearghail who should have resigned, *twice*) of course
I was delighted to see SNP fail miserably in their political point scoring
There could be trouble for Keir Starmer in this if it turns out he threatened the Speaker.
Does anyone think he leaves finger prints in matters like this?
Remember, he was the DPP in a former life, so he knows about finger prints.
Just seen a line that Starmer has denied threatening him but said he tried "to persuade" him to his point of view.
It doesn't look good for Starmer. If this carry on came from the Tories, Labour would be up in arms.
I suspect Labour will be hoping this story dies away quickly.
The purging within Labour has become quite brazen since they successfully ousted Corbyn and anyone not aligned with the Starmer wing. I would suspect, regardless of intelligence or experience that he is liable to the feeling of being invicible as anyone else.
Same thing happened with Tony Blair. He ran his government effectively as a President.
Truss is over in the US drumming up publicity for her mad political notions. There isn't much more that I can say other than thankfully she's not in power anymore!
She should really be expelled from the Conservative Party for these comments. This is barking mad conspiracy theory stuff.
Lee Anderson needs to go out the door before her. Dangerous talk about Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London;
GB News. Jack SHoneT. Didn't bother with the link since it is unlikley any worse than the Islamophobia Zak Goldsmith tried.
Still trying to drum up this fantasy I see, of "the left" taking over the Bank of England, noted left wing institute. The obvious answer is "money" but you do wonder what is possessing Truss to just dive straight into this conspiratorial cesspit of the "popular conservative" movement. But such is the industrialisation of the media echo chamber she will probably maintain a healthy career bouncing around various right wing, "Big Woke is the enemy" outlets, sharing her lunacy. Sad though she'll never likely express a degree of contrition over her utterly disastrous time as PM.
A Conservative source said: “Lee was simply making the point that the mayor, in his capacity as [police and crime commissioner] for London, has abjectly failed to get a grip on the appalling Islamist marches we have seen in London recently.”
Is this just the Palestine marches they're referring to or is there even a kernel of truth in this wicked little bit of dog whistling? Well. Less a dog whistle, more an abject shout so the Tory base can hear at the back.
She really has lost the plot.
Frankly, just looking at the States, you'd wonder why people think political appointees are a good idea (if you've an interest in non-political areas of the State). I know why people would like to have political appointees to do their bidding but I always find it bizarre that some police and legal positions can be appointed by election. If that is not politicising the system, what is?
I know the Conservatives want to install a system like that in the UK as support for their policies is in the gutter and they'll need to work hard to come up with the next version of a vote-winning Tory for the youth. I just can't understand how anyone with an actual interest in fairness and democracy as opposed to revenge-based dominance would think that adopting the American system is a fair idea.
It is so open to abuse and the blatant disregard for protocol and pure selfishness to rule only for your supporters among the latest iteration of US and UK conservatives is quite alarming.
I would love to hear her and Farage's evidence for a radical Islamist MP in the next election. Of course, no-one with decent access to them will ask for it, they won't give a straight answer to anyone who does and it most likely doesn't exist.
Won't be long before England has another Jo Cox with this kind of scumbag talk.
That was just a poor attempt at a back track from the Tory press people. It's clear that's not what Anderson meant.
The sooner these bastards are out of power in Britain the better. They're an absolute cancer.
Comes as no surprise whatsoever to see Truss cosying up to the likes of Steve Bannon over in America though. The UK "conservatives" (and I use the word lightly) have been taking their cue from that type of shite for some time now.
