yes but they (along with the other usual suspects, sprite 7 up club orange etc) are using different barcodes/changed their barcodes. The old tins of coca-cola are not in-scope when typed in on the barcode checker.
Mate of mine used to work for Greenclean a few years back. Said he was out with some of the lads he used to work with, and are still in the refuse game, for a few drinks at the weekend. They reckon this is all going to end in tears. They’re worried about their jobs, mortgages etc. They reckon that it’ll end up with only one company per area, as it is where me and my mate live.
No competition, prices skyrocketing and eventually if there is no money to be made, no private bin services. Margins are paper thin as it is according to them.
Surely their till would be set up to charge the deposit whether you take the bottle or not?
Waste collection is a natural monopoly and competition did not bring prices down - one company per area is all there should be.
That one company should either be the council or under direct contract to them (Kildare used a private firm as direct contract for decades for instance, that wouldn't be new)
No idea what way they set up their til. Put I wont be paying a deposit on what you dont get as far as i am concerned.
If they do charge a deposit but have an exemption on taking them back, they must have their takeback exemption certificate displayed clearly for consumers to see. I must start looking out for those! I'd love to know the figures for registered HORECA businesses. I'd say many are finding out about it when they get their wholesaler invoices with a shiny new "deposit" charge on it!
I won't be using this system. I just can't be bothered with it. All that complication.
Instead I'll just not buy or severely reduce my use of these bottles. I guess that might be what these people say they are looking for - reduce consumption.
Any plastic bottles I do buy I'll be putting the in the recycle bin like I've always done.
in-scope basically means: a can/bottle has no return logo but still a barcode that is recognized by the RVM's, and their manufacterer has paid (or been forced to) pay the same fee as the other producers/manufacturers who registered with the re-turn scheme paid. (maybe an extra blanket payment to cover fraud too idk) Because of re-turn ballsing up the process and alot being put down to last minute/half arsed getting the companys on board the scheme. Rather than change barcodes and and waste hundreads of cans/bottles that already exist released into the wild, and rather than put a return logo on things for the time being. They paid a largely bigger upfront fee to be included in the scheme and to be allowed to continue to sell their items in the country. in return they did'nt have to change their barcode.
Meaning because of paying this large bigger upfront fee that other brands containing the logo did pay, we get to redeem any of these products we have for their deposits, without any docile dudes accusing it of being fraud, since the company paid a blanket cost to cover these deposits being redeemed for non logo items that were purchased prior to feb 1st.
i hope this explains it, tried covering it from as many angles as i could think of.
tl;dr in-scope means scheme eligable/containers that can be brought to an RVM for deposit, yet contain no return logo on them.

supporting the scheme does not an employee make.
No more of this crap last warning to everyone. Threadbans will follow.

i agree, [deleted]
i rather call these cans non-logo redeemables, or cheat cans, or free money lol. [deleted]
I was in at my local tesco the other day and seen a lad putting barcode stickers onto bottles and cans and the machine accepting them. Seems as though he had printed a load of them to claim back the money for all his non deposit cans and bottles, same fella had about 20 quids worth by the end.. I had a feeling it was only gonna be a matter of time until someone thought of it.
That’s my point. When it comes to contract renewal time, or even before then, if companies are making a loss for to this scheme, they’ll recoup the losses by jacking prices any high, or walk away leaving the council to have to buy trucks etc and who pays for them?? We do, again, through sky high prices.
A colleague printed off some and did the same, just to see if it would work. At first he said he was only trying it out but might do it for a few quid if he is stuck. Now i think he is on to a gold mine because he has gone all quiet about it and just smiles and tips his nose when i ask him.
If companies are walking away, there's going to be trucks going cheap; as well as staff laid off and ready to be hired to operate them.
I am entirely, 100% in favour of councils taking back waste collection. The current system has duplicated costs everywhere.
matter of time......
Its been talked about for the last year or more 🤣
@BoardsBottler this was you wasnt it? Show us your 1000 euro Re-Turn vouchers 🤣
unless one has access to free ink and printing, its not even feasible. ink is insanely expensive
i don't condone doing anything like this
lmfao best comment i seen all week. Sadly i was'nt at any tesco's with cans the past few days so it could'nt have been me. But i'll ask a few of my brothers to see if it were any of them.
(also i have'nt tried the sticker thing, all my can redeems have been "legit" done without stickers, and legal in the eyes of the law)
you only have to print out the barcode 😂
Realistically you only need to print one sheet of them, then photocopy them and cut them out
My nearest Tesco has a security guard. You would need to have your barcodes stuck on before you arrive.
Yeah I am lost at this stage, looks like the return logo has become irrelevant already. It seems the craic now is to check barcodes online before going to a RVM (more convenient for everyone!). Paying a deposit also appears to be hit or miss as to whether you will get a refund.
Hopefully it will settle itself out over time but it does not inspire confidence really.
Where did you see this?
Is the North also into this scheme as all cans or bottles could be shipped anywhere?
Yeah I reckon the security (I believe a contractor working for Noonan) will give many a shite about an RVM and how it’s used.
I’m sure there’s a few mall cop type lads who’d citizens arrest someone over it but most of these lads seem barely arsed to even monitor the cctv 🤣
Number of RVM sites on the map has crept up marginally again; still missing the one in my local shop that is absolutely working (cause I've used it).
Doesn't make me confident that machines are getting updated with new barcodes if they don't even seem to know where they all are!
Well at this Tesco you'd be slapping on barcode labels right in front of him. Maybe he wouldn't care but I'd be surprised.
I don’t know if they would in fairness it’s not really part of the job description (ie detect and prevent shoplifting)
I’ve rarely known these lads to give a bollocks about anything but watching the cameras.🤣 Thats just my experience though!
If the security guard noticed you labeling bottles with barcodes, what would they do any way? Ask you to stop? Ask you to leave?
I can't imagine there is anything they could really do beyond that? They are hardly going to detain you while they call the Gardai.
I love the idea of someone thinking this up by themselves, and can only imagine the joy when the machine accepts their handiwork.
