Was it like this in the 70s and 80s with the soft touch approach to crime? Any old heads shed further light? Has it always been this way?
Well I was in the UK and generally my opinions would have me firmly in the "do gooder" and "friends with criminals" class often for pointing out the obvious such as the fact that if prisons were like holiday camps [a favourite], then no one would pay fines and petty crime to get to prison would rocket.
To have a thug kick a pensioners teeth out would not ever have seen any calls for leniency though, not now or in the seventies and eighties. In fact I am seriously wondering when the Tories will dangle the death penalty in front of their muppets to get re- elected, there always was a firm majority for it in Britain and like migrants arriving there, facts and common sense don't compete too well with pure hate.
So in Britain, no. Here I never locked my car or anything until very recently, so I guess there were few criminals about to be that hard on.
The horrors came with drugs it seems to me, and once again my being a "soft touch" does not extend to my feeling and desires for the disgusting animals that chemically enslave a nations youth, any nations youth, even the Brexit loving poor divils across the water :-)
'back in the day' the ould lad's family and neighbours would probably have gone down to the shop, dragged the lad out of it and slapped him around the place. gardai would have laughed at him if he tried to report it.
We are living in more enlightened times.
In the UK, my place of residence for the last 50+ years, the police would have collared each and every one of them and given a full taste of British "justice", the thug that was dragged out would be given compensation and if he was true to form he would have no money anyway and would hardly be worth prosecuting for the initial act.
I still read the local UK paper and a lot of these thugs do have people vouching for their work record. I don't know if the magistrates or judges are taken in, but a seconds thought about the offence coupled with their past records would make this a joke.
The direct solution is no doubt the most effective and seems satisfying, unfortunately the beating might not go to plan and also there is the prospect of starting family feuds.
It sounds like a wonderful deterrent though and certainly beats those signs asking customers not to abuse staff.
I wonder if Holland and Barret had such a sign incidentally, it's common in the UK to have notices asking customers not to abuse staff.

I see the parole board are due to with the breach separately so you would hope that they will revoke any license he has. But you have to ask yourself how 8 years is appropriate for the likes of this. Madness.

Pretty much. Prison overcrowding and the revolving door was definitely a thing in the 80s. Heroin epidemic caused a massive surge in crime.
I remember looking up some old news reports from the early 70s, people caught with arms caches gettting 2-3 years, amazingly lenient but it was for "the cause"

ZERO jail time. From Martin Nolan’s summing up, he was more concerned for the wellbeing of the guilty party than the innocent family of the girl he killed and her boyfriend.

I find it bizarre that in around three quarters of the photos on googling he has this very bizarre, arrogant self satisfied smile on his face… almost if it was to be interpreted… “ yes, I love the attention and notoriety, I love the power, love winding people up, and I’ll keep doing it… “
Hopefully the DPP will appeal this ruling and put the killer behind bars with a lifetime driving ban too...

In places like Caracas the government like to keep the criminals around as it keeps the general populous in fear i.e. they are easier to control and less time for protests.
