You might not agree but it's a long standing tradition that RTE reports news in a neutral fashion, unbiased and as they see it without opinion. Do they always do that? No. But generally they do. On the other hand the BBC is a propaganda machine, they have political alliances. Their not as bad as the UK rag press that must take a sizeable chunk of responsibility for Brexit, in misleading the British people.
I might be wrong, but wasn't the BBC world service set up in a way in conjunction with the UK govt. So that it can't be sued for "false" reporting. I wonder why. It might be entertaining to watch carlson & putin getting ripped, which I would in general agree with, but news shouldn't be full of opinions.
That sounds more positive. Unfortunately though I don't think even the Ukrainians believe they have any real hope of pushing Russia off the stolen territory this year and is really is turning into a question of what comes next now.
Ultimately I suspect it will move towards giving up some territory in the east in return for security guarantees from NATO countries, then hope that Putin dies or is ousted at some point and maybe get territories back in the future if Russia eventually becomes a non dysfunctional country
The funny part is, the DF will buy these radars, then won't be able to afford software upgrades or in fill radars for mitigating all these new wind farms and we'll be blind again :-D
It’s fascinating to see the contrast in reporting language of that interview between the clown and the criminal scumbag between BBC and RTE. I enjoyed reading BBC’s article - it was scathing of p*tin, calling him out on all his bullsh!t, the ridiculous claims he continues to make and the droning on about how poor misunderstood r*ssia is always wronged throughout history. At times even mocking him and that carlson dope.
Compare that to RTE’s article that, if one never heard of carlson, would be led to believe he was a regular decent reporter/journalist and not the waste of space MAGA puppet that he is. The RTE article also doesn’t note anything about some of the stupid sh!t p*tin comes out with which again, if one didn’t know any better would be inclined to think he makes reasonable points.
Why is this? I get that Ireland is apparently neutral in all of this (not really) but surely the national news agency should be piling on with ridiculing that scumbag in the kremlin and ensuring any of his bullsh!t claims are called out with reasoning as to why he’s talking out of his hole.
Drones. Every day there's footage promptly released from both sides. The Russians are still uploading daily Ukrainian losses from elsewhere on the frontline but not here. Likewise Ukraine are avoiding Avdiivka footage (from drones).

Given how stretched Russia's air defence is I think this could become very costly for Russia's economy if they keep hitting the refineries. All these fires being lit help too but the bigger money makers are hitting refineries and weapons factories.

Exactly, while Putins Russia is disintegrating, and I'm not talking about the war situation, I'm talking about Russian society itself, it's in the middle of the perfect storm, being battered on all sides. Falling value of the Ruble, interest rates of 16%, rising prices, shortages of basic staple food item's etc It's getting harder and harder for Putin to keep the lid on. After another few months of winter privations, and Putin's re-election, will come Putin's first and biggest test this year so far, when he announces the next round of mobilizations.
He makes the clear point that if Ukraine is defeated or forced to accept a deals where it loses land and Russia declares victory then it likely China invades Taiwan.
If that happens the economic impact on Ireland will be massive. Aka it is our national interest that Ukraine prevails. Anything else will cost us each in our pocket dearly.

Ukraine SitRep: Finally A Wonder-Weapon That Does What It Promised To Do
Yesterday some 65 FAB500 and FAB1500 were used against targets in Avdeevka.
The use of these bombs, which carry 300 kilogram and more of explosives, near one's own troops requires careful planing and observation. Observers on the ground have to make sure that their own troops are outside of the deadly circle of these bombs and that the coordinates of targets are submitted in a disciplined but secure and timely manner. Pilots have to make sure that the received coordinates are programmed into the bombs and that their release is done at the right attitude and positions.
This kill chain requires intensive training and disciplined soldiers. Yesterday's attacks demonstrate that the Russian army and air-forces have mastered this discipline.
Any detected resistance or position of Ukrainian troops was visited by a precise FAB attack within just a few minutes.
There is no defense against these weapons. It is no wonder then that any resistance against the Russian onslaught is breaking down. Russian troops can proceed through bombed out Ukrainian positions without taking losses.
Russian tactics, flatten everything in front of them to take the ground. No point hanging around on the receiving end of that.

We also need a fit for purpose radar system and navy given the significant infrastructure we have off shore and even more so in the coming years given we will have off shore wind farms as well. A fit for purpose intelligence capability is vital as well.
Syrskyi was also responsible for the defense of Kyiv in the early stages of the war, apparently. I doubt they'd appoint him as the Boss if he was completely useless.
Unless the decision is not related to a comparison of military skills. It could be simply down to their working relationships with Zelensky and how much ‘input’ into military decisions they are willing to take.

Why not keep pointing out the obvious. This is a thread on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
We have all suffered/ made sacrifices to support Ukraine. Obviously Ukrainians have paid far higher prices than us and many the ultimate price. But we have all taken a hit too in our choice to support Ukraine in this war. Let's not list out the effects here but they range across Irish society and affect everyone to various levels of degree.
Then we see/ read clear calls from Zelenskiy and the Ukrainian military for more 'volunteers'/ conscripts for the armed forces and a whole variety of back up roles.
In that context, it is perfectly reasonable for Ukraine and for us, to expect those who are eligible to go and do their bit. This is the norm in war, people usually men volunteer to go and serve in whatever required capacity. There is no defence not to.
Give me reasons why it isn't.

If the UAF are largely moving to a defensive posture for 2024 he might be the right man for the job. He seemed to have been a success on a number of fronts, with the exception of Bakhmut (as you rightfully pointed out). Of course it might be the precursor to more decisions being made on political rather than military grounds. Ukraine is going to have a rough year.
