Why exactly should I be trusting the word of Putin who kills his political opponents, journalists and whistleblowers? The war crimes and acts of genocide are well documented. I'm pretty confident there will be a perfectly accurate fact check of every statement he makes. You refer to the "savages" narrative but that's literally the narrative Putin follows to justify genocide. It's been following the concept of Russification of Ukraine.
Btw, your exact same argument could be used in relation to an interview with Hitler or Mussolini. I'm sure he'll go on a rant about the "culture wars" that you'll lap up.
