The problem is that Europe won't give that money and it definitely won't give enough arms.
The MAGA crowd are a recent but long standing manifestation of US isolation and opposition to involvement in foreign conflicts, they are extra sore over the refusal of western Europe to pay for its own security and defense, or secure its neighbouring interests, and have America do it instead.
It's nearly 10k Kms from America to Ukraine and without their aid it would be long over, while the nextdoor neighbours keep the purse tightly held.
But that's essentially already happening with the various aid packages the majority of the actual money was staying in America and going to American companies, while at the same time US defence companies made record sales to foreign buyers
One Russian soldier said that if one of their men is lightly wounded he can survive. Badly wounded are left to rot.
Whatever about the dead /injured ratio in the current war in Ukraine, in previous wars, where there were accurate counts of both dead and injured (in military's who cared for their soldiers, unlike Putin's regime) a very conservative figure of 2-1 was what was arrived at, but realistically, it would have been 3-1+. There has been reports coming from the Russians, about their own wounded being abandoned, even when they could have been saved. And then you have Putin's cash saving efforts when it came to paying the bereaved families compensation....no body? no cash. So my figures of 365'000 dead, multiplied by 2 = 730 injured., is pretty reasonable. And bear in mind that these figures, based on reports from Ukraine, are possibly out if date by now.
Isn't there also the complication where Russia is also false reporting dead as "missing in action", so they can avoid paying the next of kin their dues? Seem to recall that chicanery going on, similar to how Russia underreported their COVID cases as fast listing then as "pneumonia"
I'm not disputing the total number of casualties - just that I think a huge number of the 730k you'd estimate as "injured" are more likely to be dead, alongside the other 365k.
The thing with Americans is that most of them do see the threat posed by Putin, and support moves to destroy that threat, and they will not ever have better chance than now at a miniscule cost of 3.5 % of their defense budget, and without any boots on the ground. Never mind the fact that most of the cash will be spent in the US, and a lot of the supplied arms would have been considered obsolete and scheduled for disposal in any case. Problem with the rest of the Americans, the anti-support Ukraine brigade is that until US marines start getting killed and American cities getting bombed, they will not be convinced of the threat Putin and his like-minded henchmen around the world pose.
I wouldn't be surprised if a Russian killed/injured ratio is 1:1.
My point is, if in a standard war ratio is 1:3, say 100k killed, 300k injured. In russia, a big part of those 300k injured, would be left to die, or wouldn't get required treatment and then die. Then it would make 200k dead and 200k injured.
Another drone strike on a oil refinery.
But that's where a lot of the money is actually going and it's obsolete weapons mostly too that would have cost them to destroy.
the one in the middle looks like AI
It's entirely reasonable for Ukraine as a state to ask/ demand that anyone who meets criteria for serving in this war and who has fled the country, to return voluntarily or be returned. That is their basic duty as citizens and they should not be given a free pass to escape it.
I'm surprised that we don't hear more here from the Ukrainian refugee community and the Ukrainian ambassador on this subject. If they want to sustain public support for our sheltering them, then they need to pull their fingers out and comply with requests from their native country.
This type of action may shorten this war.
One would've assumed that TV news broadcasting would make the US public more aware of world events today than they were during World War 2 and even more so than they were during the Vietnam War because of the proliferation of cable news channels.
Even Fox News doesn't ignore world events!
So how is it that the availability of breaking news on TV hasn't changed the isolationists' minds?
Presumably, deserters constitute a small minority of able-bodies Ukrainian adult males. Nothing that any Ukrainian ambassador would say would prevent desertion.
Wouldn't approval by Capitol Hill still be necessary for the sending of military equipment to Ukraine?
They are refugees protected under international law there can be no demanding them to be returned or to Deported to face forced conscription,
They don't want to fight or be in Ukraine while there is a war going on ,
If zelensky tries to force this he's going to face reactions from Europe
Didn't stop Biden bypassing Congress on approval recently for selling arms to Israel.
I'm sure there are ways around it all, but the biggest issue would be with EU companies loosing out to American companies. I assume all, if not most of that EU money will be staying within the EU.
Don't bother. This segue has been well worn, repeatedly, and is only the fantasy of anti-migrant rhetoric mixed with paper tiger "I'd pick up a rifle in the morning" bravado of those who'll never be asked to prove it.
A picture paints...
We've been over this before, on the outbreak of open hostilities Ukraine quickly brought in rules regarding males leaving the country. If any of current refugees broke those rules and left, they are deserters, not refugees.
The reason this is important is to sustain support for genuine war refugees from Ukraine. Those who may be abusing the system should be returned and that includes those from unaffected areas who see no problem with returning for periodical visits.
Maybe a deserter in Ukraine's eyes, in the EU's eyes they are seen as refugees.
Can Ireland even extradite people who will be conscripted into an active war zone?
Should we also extradite any Russians also? Need to be consistent and not just single out Ukrainians.
They are refugees it doesn't matter what your opinion or anyone's opinions is ...
And they are probably the only genuine refugees here
One would be to help Ukraine and no one outside of the Socialist Meps ilk want to help Russia so the others wouldnt be send.
So pick and choose who the laws apply to?
That would go down well in court when some Ukrainian refugee is trying to fight the extradition order. Which I'm not even sure Ireland could actually accommodate as do we even have a law against draft dodging?
It's all only theoretical, where Ukraine are going to get the 500k it needs to bolster for the next offensive is going to be a big ask and where the weapons to equip the ones for the front line is another big ask.
Oh I understand the need for Ukraine to have fresh conscription. Troops at the front need rotating. It has to be planned in advance as those troops need training etc...
However I don't see how Ukraine can force the Irish government to extradite men back to Ukraine. Probably the only way would be for Ireland to pay Ukraine the refugee payment directly and then Ukraine pay those refugees in Ireland. That way they can withhold payment to men they feel are draft dodgers. But I'm sure those men would rather stay in Ireland.
They still have a population of 37 million to draw conscripts from, there should be zero need to demand the EU to deport refugees to fight a war considering they have an unemployment rate of 20% or so it's not as if they have nobody not available to fight,
