I suppose the roll out of machines was that big they had to roll them out over time and leave them there.
Either way, I do t see how the machines won't be abused in locations.
I imagine their systems are setup to charge a levy for all drinks, they're not going to know if that drink has a return label or not.
So just back from Tesco, 8 pack of Carlsberg now at the return price but no logo on them, barcode the same as the last pack - are these gonna be returnable or are the shops robbing people again? (NVM the machine was out of order - give it a year and shops will just give up trying to maintain them for the hassle I bet)
Does your receipt mention this levy separately ?

So while the Re-Turn home page makes it abundantly clear that the logo is required to be part of the scheme, on the Retailer page, there's this nugget of pertinent information
To prevent waste, for a limited period from 1 February, there will be some stock of plastic bottles and cans that may not feature the Re-turn logo. i agree, its not nice to mess up the machines, especially day 1 when people want to use them its not a good image. This is assuming its vandalizm of course and no fault of the machines themself. i seen a few people online saying its either ran out of paper or some machines reporting to be full when barely anyone has gotton to use them. still not sure what the story is.
i'm looking forward to going out tomorrow and seeing what the story is, not just machine wise, but also seeing whats up with the bottles, and if there is any with logo's out there. its like looking for a rare pokemon or a leprechaun that leads to a pot of gold.
i remember a scheme around bottles donkeys years ago where we had to go looking for the ones with the blue line or something, and then 10 of them lables = a free radio

in fairness they are square shape not round, so i imagine they would be kinda hard to roll out. Would've taken alot of time i rekon, imagine trying to roll a big metal dice that has the ability to gobble up cans, bottles, and print out some paper. re-roll, i mean re-turn
Went out for a walk earlier and passed by local Tesco. All four machines seemed to be working but with no one using them, it was hard to know for sure. Same story with local Super Valu.
aldi machines has error message which is funny as that infrastructure was built over 12 months ago. This is the first time I have seen the shutters up on the separate building, but machines down 😂
All the machines I have seen are part of the retailers infrastructure and have shutters or some sort of restriction during non operating hours. Not sure the designers of this system expected people to be interested in their new idea on Day 1.
The PAC have been gorging themselves on the RTE fiasco. Maybe it’s time to switch target and this seems like a good replacement.
There's no public money involved so PAC have no remit.
If PAC can get involved in anything that looks like it might go over budget of anyones money, I'm going to report my partner and our gaff renovation to them.

This system is not government funded.
Currently they are 2 sets of barcodes, soft and Hardcoded
the hardcoded barcodes are the ones that contain the new logo and are due to start being delivered to store over the next 2 -3 weeks.
the soft coded barcode are the normal codes with out the logo, some of the current Lucozade range of products such as Orangina
these products include the extra charge from today.
the machines have being updated to accept those products with out the logo
the extra charge is listed separately on the till screen and receipts so you can see what items you have paid the charge on .
if the product doesn't contain the logo and is not part of the softcode range the product will be rejected by the machine for the person to take it home.
this is to prevent people claiming the machine took the product and never got the refund.
side effect of this scheme some lines of stock are going to be delisted from the Irish market such drinks that are Flashed prices, and some of the 50% extra free ranges of Pepsi and 7up

Those Pepsi/7up bottles would have been made in Ballyfermot for the Irish market, at least before Britvic bought the franchise but I'd assume still are?
Reps I spoken too said it due to people claiming false advertising , unless they start printing the deposit fee onto the labels like 1.20 +15c deposit,
the 50% extra Free range from Britvic range are being replaced with different name like mega pack. again due to legal wording, since the charge is applied to volume of liquid in the bottle, so can't claim 50% extra free if you going be charged the fee for 750ml and not 500.
the 50% free Pepsi ,max and cherry range have all now being delisted, if the prices remain the same with the new branding was not confirmed at time.
If the consumer is getting all their deposit back, how do the retailers get their money back on all those machines and how do the re-turn ceo who was on liveline yesterday get paid ?
This is a government scheme and there is state money in there somewhere
If the consumer gets all the deposit back, how does the retailer recoup his money and pay for ongoing machine maintenance and then pay for the trucks to collect the bottles and cans.
The only way that works without state money, is a lot of us don’t bring the bottles or cans back and that defeats the purpose of the scheme in the first place 🤔
Producers pay for the shortfall. There's no state money.
And, if producers end up paying for the shortfall, they will pass it on to the consumer!

How soon will the waste collection companies increase their rates now that the amount of aluminum they collect will be substantially reduced?
